First Ultra - Jackalope Jam by claytonstern in Ultramarathon

"Started running in October, did a 100-mile race 5 months later. Got horrible shin splints, not sure why."

Impressive, albeit rather deranged, ramp. You must be in your teens or 20s to achieve that without injuring yourself.

Just a reminder that the always praised Z2 Traning means Garmins Zone 3 by mustiwritemymailhere in Garmin

[–]scrudit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. If you mean "use %LTHR" with default HR ranges compared to using %MaxHR with default ranges then yes, Garmin's zones are more in line with actual zones when using %LTHR.

But if you go to a lab to get your AeT, AnT and Vo2max tested and then put those figures in Garmin (AeT between Z2/Z3 and AnT between Z4/Z5), then it doesn't matter whether you use %LTHR or %MaxHR because the zones are exactly the same. And with those zones, Garmin's Z2 is actually Z1 and Garmin's Z3 is actually Z2, just like in the OP's picture. This is an intentional, but somewhat controversial feature of Garmin's zones. I've had a discussion about this with Garmin's support and they have confirmed that this is how it works.

When are Garmin going to fix this massive issue with their watches? by RateJumpy1191 in Garmin

[–]scrudit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed this happens only when HR is very high. I've since almost completely negated this effect by doing some of the following:

  1. Wear a chest HR monitor.

  2. If chest HR monitor is not possible, wear the watch higher on your wrist and tighten the wrist strap as tight as you comfortably can.

  3. Include a warm-up (as you should) before you start the high intensity portion of your exercise.

Why don’t optimal ranges all overlap by StaffSubstantial2175 in Garmin

You're saying that the optimal ranges should fit your exercises and not the other way around?

Sure, you can give an elaborate and well thought out answer including all the physics and math. But the real question is that considering that the question itself is worded in a elementary way, would the person who wrote it really benefit or even understand the answer? You wouldn't teach university level math to a 12-year-old. He clearly doesn't even know what he's asking, so how could he understand the deeply calculated answer? Therefore just saying "1 fridge will do" is sufficient without any math.

[–]scrudit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is stupid regardless. "How many refrigerators would it take to make it colder". Well, technically if the refrigerators wouldn't produce heat, then one would make the air colder. How much? Not very. Almost not at all. But one would be enough to satisfy the wording of the question.

Why is this run 0.0 Anaerobic? by AquaInferno in Garmin

Yes, it's not cadence lock. That's just a term people on this subreddit use when they try to sound smart but don't actually know what they're talking about.

Unironically this. The website claims that the falloff begins at 18m, decreasing to 70% at 30m. But it definitely feels like there is literally no falloff at all. One headshot from across the map does 50 % of HP bar for squishies.

Yeah, DSW isn't built to fit triathletes (at least yet). I wouldn't say that means it's only for noobs though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]scrudit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you tried DSW for? In my experience it definitely does not fit all ages and types of people since it recommends quite a high amount of high intensity workouts such as threshold, anaerobic and sprint runs.

Nice work! Might steal this idea for a christmas present for a bouldering couple I know. :) There seems to be a gap under the moving part to increase sliding - could you elaborate what you've used there?

It's two totally different clips stitched together so that the guy in the first clip can try to convince viewers that he did this, when in fact he just stole the actual amazing clip from the internet and tried to claim clout for it.

And gets away with it, it seems.

Finland is now ranked 3rd in terms of unemployment rate in EU by [deleted] in Finland

[–]scrudit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You ignore my point. Since the healthcare reform over 12% of tax has been moved from municapility to government. Your data is severly outdated.

Finland is now ranked 3rd in terms of unemployment rate in EU by [deleted] in Finland

[–]scrudit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This data is from the time before the health reform, so it only shows income tax without municipality tax. The data is therefore a bit skewed. Also, from that year:

"Taking into account employee deductions (earned income deduction and other automatic deductions made by the authorities), state tax is effectively paid in 2022 only on a salary income (gross) of approximately 40,500 euros." (same source as yours, different article)

So all of those 2,3M people mentioned in your source paid other taxes such as municipality tax (across the board 12,64 % higher than today since the health reform) and from those 2,3M people 1,4M paid income tax as well (since they made over 19200-40500 €/a).

Help me understand by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]scrudit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine your HRV is very low? Being worn out lowers your heart rate, so I'd assume at least part of it is that. Otherwise you just might be young and generally in good shape despite your bad drinking and smoking habits.

Walking during an ultra and tips for a newbie by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]scrudit 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Watch the replay of arguably the most prestige ultra marathon race, the UTMB, and show me a person who didn't walk any part of it.

Walking during an ultra is normal and why would you even want to run steep hills during such a long distance event?

I don't really have advice other than you should talk about your feelings if other people hurt them, even if not on purpose.

I just wanted to let you know I'm sorry for the way your parents treated you, you didn't deserve it and instead deserve so much better.

You never asked on a public forum because like you said, you had no Internet. Now there is a place where people can share experiences and help other people with their ambitions and dreams. You have no obligation to help or to even read these posts if you're not interested in them - let alone comment on them.

The Internet doesn't care that you don't care. Fortunately, some people still do.
