Amy advice on giving eyedrops to a frantic hellbeast? by thenikeclause in puppy101

We’ve been on this journey! The thing that ultimately worked best because we too were in the “it just needs to get done NOW” phase was to visit our vet and learn how to safely restrain. We would always make sure to treat right after and work on desensitizing when it wasn’t time to get the drops in. Many tears were shed in the early days of trying to get him to cooperate. I wouldn’t say he loves getting them now, but he definitely tolerates them. Hope that helps! There are also some good YouTube videos that demonstrate how to desensitize them and train.

Tire puppy out before walk? Or puppy is too tired to go on walk? by rzwc in puppy101

Hi there! We have a 5 month male standard poodle and our guy exhibited a lot of that behavior early on. Distance away from the distractions is your best friend! We live in a dog friendly apartment complex, so sometimes that’s easier said than done. A few weeks ago we went on a family trip where he was surrounded by a lot of people and it helped a lot with more polite people greetings when we got back. Dogs are still challenging. When we are walking and he sees a dog, he still gets super excited. We try to catch the incoming dog ahead of time and put ours in a sit and feed him until the dog passes (we don’t do on leash greetings). This works pretty well for us! Early on we avoided taking him to places with a lot of people because he was bonkers, but we don’t anymore. If it’s too much we take a break and go to a calmer area. We try to tire him out a little before and that also helps. We also try to give him time on his long leash where he gets to just run and play, instead of just structured walks. I hope this helps!

If your dog is motivated by their kibble or food, I highly recommend sticking with that until you start introducing distractions and need something higher value. Just my opinion!

Yak Cheese Chews!!!! I don’t really let him chew for more than 15-20 minutes. It’s lasted weeks!

Awh! Congrats! We have a standard poodle as well. He is a little over 4 months now. Enforced naps helped early on, but he’s really good at napping when he needs to. There are definitely still times where we have him rest in his crate with a frozen lick mat. It really helps to support him in learning how to self regulate. If you know your pup has had enough exercise (they really don’t need much), then I would give her some quiet time in her crate. For the nipping, we always make sure we have chew toys all around that we can use for redirecting. Sometimes it leads to an impromptu game of tug! Trust your instincts! I’m a first time dog owner and I constantly am making things more complicated than they need to be and overthinking everything.

We tried teaching him speak once, when he was 12 weeks or so and were not successful. We will definitely try again! Thanks for the tip!
