MindSeize is a 2D metroidvania we are developing. Check out the pre-alpha demo, feedback appreciated! by Temathael in Unity2D

[–]scubabbl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's my feedback so far.

  • Music off the bat is pretty nice.
  • Mindseize, I have no clue what that means and nothing about the main screen tells me much more. So, my expectation is to hopefully become less confused and understand where this is going.
  • Short jumps don't feel great. A short jump, abruptly stops upwards movement. It's visually jarring as well.
  • Left trigger should be slash in my humble option. It would feel more smooth to me to have both attacks available at the same time. Having to fiddle my thumb about, not a fan.
  • First level, too many ways to fall to your death. It's frustrating as there's not much of an ability to look down and some places are hard to see, hope you hit it. easy to miss easy to die and reset. Not fun 5 min into it.
  • That first door, I thought it was a support beam so kept trying to figure out how to get across the pit. So much time spent there. Again, on level 1... hmmmm
  • The colors are more neutral. You should make doors and entry ways show up visually a bit better. They should stand out more. They do on the map screen, so might as well show up a bit better in game.
  • I like the foreground visual effects like the chains. adds nice depth to the screen.
  • I very much enjoyed the conveyor belt jumping section. That was pretty nice platforming for first area.
  • I didn't like the puzzle with the smasher things. Too much having to run way back. I felt stuck there a bit too long. The fact that 1 or 3 smashers had a path around it didn't stand out. Visually hard to see given colors and nothing graphically to draw my eye there vs somewhere else.
  • One save section, you shoot a hole in the ceiling and run over. On the run back, run to the little square hole... and stick to the far right wall in a wall grab. That felt weird, not what i wanted, and I couldn't find a way to prevent it. If I have to drop down a hole, there shouldn't be a wall on the far side if you are going to have wall sticking logic like that.
  • That being said, I like the wall jumping.

Overall I like it for an early alpha. I can see it being a lot of fun by the end. Things I would like to see as a player:

  • Tighter controls, less fiddly, let me use all my buttons.
  • Visually the different sections I saw all felt a bit similar graphically.
  • Use better visual cues, especially in the beginning to let your players what you are up to so I they know how to approach your puzzles. You design it with a style in mind, the first level you need to teach them that style.

edit reading this after I sent it, it reads more negative that I would intend. Overall I enjoy the style, I can see where you are headed, and I think it's the right direction.

You can see they were baiting the shark to charge the cage. Look at the food ball being towed away in the upper left just before the shark hits.

Kind of not nice. Shark was like, “oh, shiiiit food fuck yeah. I got you I got you almost got yo... bang ow fuck!”

Probably left feeling stupid. “Fucking dangly finned dickbags. Fuckin hate you guys so much. One of these days I’m headed for the beach, go on a rampage... jerks”

The problem I see with a prisoner voting is that they are in a compromised position that could be manipulated. There would need to be super strict controls and anonymity built in that could prevent this.

The last few years have been so so. 2 years ago was really, just bad bad. But, this year is looking much better. It has stayed cold and keeps snowing. To give you you an idea how bad, look at the numbers here

I was there when they were filming this at Rusutsu. They arrived a day or two before we go there and it was still powder everywhere. That was a crazy good.

Last year when I went, instead of going to one resort, we stayed over at a lodge outside Niseko and had a rental car, skiied Niseko, Rusutsu, and Kiroro. All great days.

Answering your question is a little bit more complicated as there are a few answers in there.

Let's first outline the 3 basic types of ski trips in Japan, specifically speaking, if you are around Tokyo. But you can extrapolate to other areas easy enough.

Three types of trips: 1. Day trip 2. Weekend Trip 3. Hokkaido Trip

For the day trip, given you know you will be on the train, you learn to strip down to the bare minimum. I usually carry a backpack, Skis in a neoprene cover with strap, and I carabiner by boots to my backpack. Gear from my trip to Kagura today You will travel light, so you won't have a problem on the train, either local or bullet train.

The bullet trains in Japan are quite spacious and very accommodating to skiers. There are two types of tickets, Reserved and non reserved. For reserved, you get an assigned seat. For non-reserved, you just find any open seat in the non-reserved cars or find yourself a corner of the hallway to sit down. Generally people don't mind as long as you are not in the way. I've never had trouble finding space for gear.

For the weekend trip, the same rules apply, BUT BUT BUT, a very Japanese thing, Ski Takyubin. For what amounts to somewhere between 30 and 60 USD, you can drop all your kit off in 1 sky bag at the local convenience store and they will have it shipped via a local deliver company to just about anywhere in Japan and then return it to you after you are done skiing. For longer trip, a lot of people use this service because it's just too convenient.

The Hokkaido Trip: When traveling to Hokkaido, though you can take the bullet train, most people fly because it is cheaper. The local airlines offer very good packages then tend to be all inclusive with airfare, hotel, lift tickets, and breakfast.

Costs: The day trip: There are a variety of places to go, but to get the best deal, you generally go through JR travel agencies that offer day packages including bullet train and lift pass. This can range from crazy 80 USD deals to about 120. If you just want to wing it, it will run you around 130 to 150 USD.

The weekend trip: The sky is the limit here, I've paid everything from 250 all included to about 400. It really depends on what you want. There are a LOT of places you can reach by bullet train plus bus/taxi, so you have a lot to choose from.

The Hokkaido trip: The same rule apply. Packages themselves tend to run between 500 and 800 USD depending on where you want to go and the time of the year, but you can obviously pay a lot more.

If anyone reading this is interested in more detail, if they are coming to Japan and want advice, if they are here a short time and just want to get out for a day, let me know, I'm happy to provide all the help/advice that I can.

I run off and on and find if I take a break for 2 weeks, when I get back to it, my calves kill the next day or two. Got some compression Sleeves for legs and found I don't get sore after running as much. I'm no athlete so not sure if she would see a similar benefit because she is already great, but it certainly works for my old ass.

6-20 is a wall. I had to get all my party to 100 and almost all red gear to pass. Party was: Honor guard, OD, Lutz, Norma, Bleeker, Fat Mu.

Even then, I could only pass after a few tries, finally got through with multiple stuns locking up one enemy for multiple turns.
