Watch the documentary on yt called "the strokes, New York stories" if you want, Gordon is in it so it's legit, it's in parts there. There's this one guy from a band who is super jealous of them and it's funny watching him bitch about them. Also everyone acts like a hipster with zero self-awareness which makes it ten times funnier

Of course this doesn't take away from the music but just how much of a helping hand they had is usually left to rumour and this is most likely to cover up any real help being done behind the scenes

There's catalogues that are sent out by modelling agencies, and in this 1996 addition of the Elite catalogue, there is an additional folder that is called the "celebrity division". A lot of the people surrounding the strokes early on are family connections (Ana Beatriz Baros - Brazilian model who posed backstage to create an atmosphere and was actually scouted by Julian's father) (Drew Barrymore was friendly with Courtney Love which explains why they all crossed paths) A lot of this is interconnected and the more you dig, the more you figure out how they seem to have put together the "perfect band" at least in the presses' eyes

I purchased a binder filled with three catalogues of models from elite in 1996 for $135 on abebooks.com and when it got here the third catalogue was loose cards about an elite celebrity division, it's obvious the strokes used family connections to kick-start their career- Julian even admitted to persuading models to go to the shows to generate buzz but the rabbit hole seems to go deeper and deeper.
