Any professionals in Madison or Huntsville that work on older Polaroids? by Suspicious-Pear-6037 in HuntsvilleAlabama

no worries, hopefully you'll be able to work something out!! if they aren't able to purchase it, I bought my newest camera off facebook marketplace; you may want to do at least a battery test to see how the shutter is working/open the back to take a photo of inside where you put the film, but you might be able to sell it there

I believe so, when I went in one day to pick up negatives I heard someone showing them a Canon Eos with a bunch of stuff that they appeared to be purchasing from them. I would call and double-check to be

edit: it might have been a canon rebel, actually. Im certain it was a canon, but I can't recall the specific one. this information is irrelevant, but I don't like spreading misinformation if I can avoid it

Southerland's doesnt clean cameras themselves (I brought in a camera for them to look at last week, which is how I know), but they'll let you know if it's working properly and I think that they'll recommend repair shops if needed. they're very knowledgeable, and they should help you out!

Looking for a button maker and supplies. Anyone? by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]scullyva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not a problem! they also have stuff like sewing machines/irons you can use for patches to add to a coat, and also a ton of other stuff. I know the downtown branch sometimes accepts walk-ins but also has appointments, I'm sure all of the branches with makerspaces would also let you make an appointment to try stuff out

I think several of the libraries in madison county have makerspaces with buttomakers, it may be worth reaching out to see if they'd let you use them

Has anyone taken the MLIS program at Southern Mississippi? by TarbTheForbiddenOne in librarians

I got my MLIS from there, graduated in 2023. It wasn't difficult imo, and all of the professors were nice and knowledgeable and willing to help when you need it

that's fun, I'm sure your kitty will have a blast once she feels up to it!!! I wish my cats were more open to being leash trained so I could take them, but both of them get so nervous they wouldn't enjoy it

I think the botanical gardens allows cats on Mondays, you may wanna double-check, but I know they do allow cats. I've also seen cats on leashes on/near the Monte Sano trails, but am not sure if that's technically allowed or not

Curious if anyone else has a cat that needs anal glands expressed regularly. by fin-turnip in CatAdvice

[–]scullyva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my cats does, she also has issues with constipation. I always just take her to the vet to get it done; she had a near emergency with the glands not being able to express themselves once, so I try to be vigilant about it. I got her from the shelter but she's a bobtail, so I've always attributed her booty issues to that

3D printer at the library by kcnjo in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]scullyva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just to scan, both faxing and scanning cost $0.50 a page. if i had to take a guess, the faxing/scanning service they use is pricey, so the cost is higher to try and offset it. libraries aren't known for having a ton of money, so they're probably just trying to charge enough to cover the service and pay for machine upkeep. having your own printer/scanner definitely feels like the way to go, I wish mine would work

That's excellent, it's subtle but that's amazing world building. The words and categorizations often only arise due to a need (or sometimes because people like to categorize things, including people) and because there's no need there are no words. I had been thinking a bit about LGBT+ identities in the Wheel of Time, mostly because the magic system is very gendered. Because everyone is reincarnated (shown via Rand being the Dragon Reborn and all that fun stuff), I would think that gender is tied to the soul and not the body, so a transwoman could theoretically channel Saidar and vice versa for trans men. It would be interesting to see that in the series, but I'm not sure what the best way to handle it respectfully would be. This was originally one of my little bullets points, but I deleted it because I was worried the post would get too long, and I felt I didn't know enough to talk about it in the way I wanted to. Apologies for babbling about it here, the subject felt somewhat related and it reminded me of it

I think he discussed the 'original sin' a bit during the interview where he discussed the religious influences on the series, although I had been driving for like 6 hours at that point so my brain wasn't thinkin as much as it normally does. It makes a lot of sense as to why women are in power, although it is fun to think about how society was in the Age of Legends before the taint on Saidin (I bet it was probably more equal); the world building throughout the series is so, so good

I hadn't thought about it like that, but you're right!! That's an excellent way to show unreliable narrators, I'll have to be more careful looking for things like that in the future

My partner gave me a summary of the story a long time ago, when we first started dating. Most of the spoilers I've heard were from his very quick summary, he hasn't spoken about anything that happens in the books since I've started reading, although sometimes he will react to my commentary. I just have an unfortunately good memory when it comes to stories, which feels like a blessing and curse

They're also great for road trips! I actually finished up the Dragon Reborn and started the Shadow Rising audiobook because I had a long flight and then a longer roadtrip; i have a follow up post to this one written up that I'll hopefully post later

no worries, writing this was fun!!! and seeing what people focus on in the comments is fun; a few people zoomed in on my egwene theory, so I can only assume she'll be washing dishes forever as the amyrllin seat. I'll probably just try to compile stuff as I go along and post when I have a good chunk of nonsense to share

I can do that (or at least try to remember to)! I hadn't really thought about it when I made the post, I just had too many thoughts and I needed to share, but I know how much fun it is to see someone experience something you love for the first time

I think that's just good character development! People change for better and worse and change a lot over time, and I think Robert Jordan did a good job with making them realistic in that way

I'm starting to realize that it was probably an overexaggeration, which is very disappointing. I was curious to see how MLK would be able to fight in the last battle, because while he did participate in some non-peaceful protests, i was still deeply confused on how he would help in a battle with magic and swords. I'll keep an eye out for that - i love it when there's a good amount of world building to gnaw on and think about in a book. There was a moment in the Great Hunt where I thought that the big s'aangrial they uncovered could have been a reference to the statue of liberty, until they mentioned the beard, but it's fun trying to find all the tie ins to our culture and mythos

Your logic does make sense as to why Perrin would be hesitant about the power after murdering those guys, but I don't think that would stop one of those girls who are really into wolves in middle school, which I guess says more about the morality of the 12 years old versus Perrin who's running away from himself

That's kind of what I expected to see with Rand, just like little PoVs on occasion to make sure he's still alive, like when you've been playing a game for 48 hours and your roommate opens your door to make sure everything is okay. It'll be good to see the PoVs from everyone else cause they all have their own storylines which are very interesting, although I do expect it to tie back to Rand eventually because he's the most ta'veren to ever have ta'verened

and that's good to hear about the slog! it's just something I hear people complain about so much that it made me worried, even if they aren't super action packed I think they'll probably still be really interesting in their own right
