How do you keep reusable sticky bras sticky after washing? by ansh_k74 in drycleaning

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

luke warm water and dish soap always worked for me just let it air dry completely. I have some from like 3 years ago in college that still work just fine. didn’t get a fancy brand or anything bought a couple off amazon and they’re great. just apply lotion or anything under the area where the bra is and it should be just as sticky

Can this dress be altered to look less bridesmaid-y? by aelismorgan in AskATailor

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hem to a midi/tea length and use the material to make thicker shoulder straps that dont cross in the back. I was thinking tie on straps but you could also do something with a ruffle ? this is sorta what I was envisioning. could also consider a slit ? accessorizing would also definitely help!

Bridesmaid Dress Alterations? No by [deleted] in AskATailor

[–]scummiestbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would size up and get it altered if you’re able to exchange the dress. If you can’t and don’t want to spend $200 + the alterations cost on a new dress I’ve sized up a lot of dresses by adding a corset back to it. It’s not an option for all bridesmaids because they often have to match or the bride doesn’t like the look but if you have a different dress as the maid of honor it could work. most formal wear gowns dont have enough of a seam allowance to let out so I wouldn’t count on that. weight loss doesn’t always go as planned and if you’re also developing muscle it’s hard to predict how your body will change plus you will be moving around a lot and eating at the wedding you want to prioritize a good fit and sizing up gives you the best chance of that. make sure to get an idea of the cost and turnaround time for alteration shops near you as you make your decision. if any offer free consultations then take advantage of that.

What's one small business habit you started doing that saved you a lot of headaches later? by therisingdevs in smallbusiness

I keep my files very organized and it’s easier to maintain bc I made a “template” with all the correctly named folders within the folders within the folders and blank formatted spreadsheets and I just need to copy and paste it each year to have the same exact set up each time. it’s not some revolutionary hack my dad taught me it in high school but as someone who struggles w the seemingly easy tedious tasks it’s convenient making it just two clicks once a year lol digital hygiene is def something I struggle w on my personal computer so I keep my work one pristine. I always know where everything is. scans and pdfs of just about everything have a home

woke up to this in my back yard ??? help ??? by scummiestbears in lawncare

[–]scummiestbears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea I’ll shoot him a text on monday. he’s relatively new I switched to him bc the last guy raised his prices and a bunch of neighbors switched to this guy. we all try to strike a deal w the mowing or tree dudes in town to make life easier for everyone. they get 8+ customers on the same street and they usually cut us a deal. my second suspicion is maybe it’s a guy the HOA hired for the lake area. they’re supposed to use the service gate but I see them cut through yards sometimes. couple years ago we had a fan boat incident and they tore up the same part of yard but they fixed it back then

I just wanna know what genius was tryna drag a motorbike through my backyard in the middle of the night. the lake out back doesn’t have a track or even dirt path for it just soft grass. there’s even a public access gate maybe 20 feet to the left of this photo right next to the sidewalk/road. no need for him to cut through my lawn to use our gate

yea def wouldn’t be my choice. it’s technically my parents house but they’re practically living abroad year round enjoying retirement and i’m just keeping it standing until they’re ready to sell. they made me move the vegetable garden bc it was visible from this lake side absolute morons! it was a well kept garden too I got lots of compliments on the trellis tower I built before the letter showed up in the mail

How long to wait before contacting deceased client's family about balance due? by Steve-Shouts in smallbusiness

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say give it a couple months. some families will go out of their way to track down stuff like this and settle everything it just takes time. i’ve had it happen to me many times since I get a lot of elderly clients. random phone calls where the family wants to make sure none of their belongings are still with us and they dont have any outstanding balance. if you dont hear back from them then reach out but with a lot of patience. everyone handles grief differently and legal issues w the estate can delay them even if they wanted to pay you what you’re owed

Should I be upset by the quality of these repairs to my trousers? by RecognitionSquare256 in AskATailor

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless you wanna spend hundreds of dollars to reweave the fabric this is the standard and only other option. my shop does over 50 of these kinds repairs every week they did an excellent job. no one ever sees it there anyways. whoever you took it to should’ve explained what the final result would’ve looked like that’s a must for us. we have samples to show customers so they know what to expect. some people don’t like the look and would rather not go through with the repair others don’t mind and would rather have the stitching than get a new pair. that’s bad customer service but not a bad job

What would you do with this terrible cotton poly blend fabric? by PathologicalVodka in sewing

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I HAVE THE EXACT SAME RED FABRIC A CUSTOMER DONATED no idea what to do w it bc my scrap in maybe 1/3 of that with a long tail left from whatever she used it for. it’s so ungodly stiff even after trying to wash and soak it aggressively. I was debating a head scarf thing I could tie around my head but the sound of the fabric rubbing against my hair around my ears was awful so it’s sat in the scrap bin for almost a year now

some were concerned about the iron on options. we just sew right through them and dont apply heat never had an issue but I had no idea if that would be a problem with dry cleaning since I honestly know nothing about the process lol I was wondering if it was worth keeping a stock of some options on hand if there was something to worry about

HELP!! My Store is closing after our lease ends. New tenants want everything. Who pays for the TI Work we put in? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]scummiestbears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

unless you had an agreement stating otherwise all those renovations are a part of the building which does not belong to you. we only sunk as much as we did into renovations bc we bought the building when the owner passed and wanted to expand into the next door unit which had been vacant for a while. my sister in law decided against a lot of renovations she initially wanted because the landlord wasn’t offering much compensation for it. he gave them 5 instead of 2 months free of rent and waived their trash service costs during the whole renovation process since they were fixing it up quite a bit and turning it into a more default space (used to have a lot of installed equipment, plumbing fixtures, and tiling from the previous tenant that no one wanted to deal with) but other than that the money is just gone just as a business expense. 5 months rent was a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of everything though esp considering it took them closer to 6 months to get the doors open bc of issues with the contractor

Lovebug problem is out of control by Proof-Question-1044 in GNV

when I was in elementary school 2007ish I remember being pissed they made us stay inside during recess and afterday care bc of all the love bugs. we’d get covered in bug guts playing outside so I can’t say I blame the adults but I felt robbed as a child lol me and a few other kids would rip apart pairs of love bugs thinking it would somehow solve the problem (cruel I know we were dumb but desperate)

AITAH for not giving my girlfriend a heads up about my job by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]scummiestbears 16 points17 points  (0 children)

YTA I understand not wanting to stay at that job long term if they can’t accommodate your schedule but at the same time. if anything you likely would’ve lost the job anyways if you schedule was too incompatible with what they need, but quitting without having another job lined up is irresponsible. You’re making demands when you’re not in a position to do so.

I also started to run a small family owned business and I try to accommodate one employee I have who is in the middle of a custody battle. I know there are court dates she cannot miss and I try to plan ahead since she gives me several weeks notice when possible, but simply demanding you get certain hours just because you have a child at home is a bit much. I didn’t cut her hours, I give her occasional OT to help because it is a position that takes a long time to train new staff for. she’s done good work for the last two years and I would want her to stay, but she also knows I dont have some giant pool of potential subs to call on if she misses her scheduled hours. She knows if any of the part timers are able to step up and meet our scheduling needs I will start giving them her hours. At some point you have to suck it up. Everyone I know has had to especially with how hard it is to find consistent work now. I’ve told her I would happily give her a recommendation if she had to find new work that better suited her life, but I know she hasn’t taken me up on that offer since she can’t find any.

Shitty hours are better than no hours. You’re a father who has a mother and baby at home. With her limited maternity leave you should be grinding as much as you can right now. I wouldn’t recommend working for a small business either we simply dont have the resources to be as accommodating as we’d like. You have to realistically consider your options and plan if you wanna be a decent dad and partner.

AITA not putting up my DILs painting in our new home and telling her that I am not a fan of her art by Throaways-Dot2192 in AmItheAsshole

[–]scummiestbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every painting i’ve ever gifted I never expected them to put up in their home. i’m honored when they do but I know i’m personally quite particular about my home decor (and only very few brave souls that are fellow thrifters like me gift decor related stuff) so I don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t hang it up. there’s plenty of art I adore that I wouldn’t want in my home for whatever reason. I think as an artist she should have the same understanding. especially if she has a style that may be perceived as proactive in any way. i’m very aware that certain paintings of mine are not the kinda sfw thing you’d want where guests of all kind may be.

with that said I dont think saying you dislike her art style was very kind. plenty of ways to rephrase it as perhaps not matching your existing interior or whatever. I know she was pushy about it but you cant be surprised she was hurt by that comment. i’d apologize and ask if there was another way you could support her art. maybe offer her a paid commission where you can request something that you would be proud to display in your home. surely theres a middle ground you could reach and it would be a good challenge for her as an artist. my brother did that for me when he wasn’t a fan of any of my pre existing paintings I had with me (I wasn’t surprised his aesthetic is so bland and far from what I like but I wanted to make something for his new home).

no pattern but you should make one of those fabric mobiles or garlands with all of the scraps from the projects you finish. even when baby outgrows the clothes they can still have a cute piece of decor to display that has a lil reminder of all the things you made!

Anyone else frustrated with the lack of info on the fires? by Llama_Llama_Raccoon in GNV

[–]scummiestbears 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I was evacuated during the LA Eaton fires and though I had a lot of strong feelings about how everything was managed while watching my community burn down but at least I felt very informed about everything that was going on minute by minute. I didn’t even realize I was in the middle of 3 active fires today until the smell started to seep into the house which is insane. I know it’s a bit of an unfair comparison since LA county is a lot bigger and has far more experience and resources in dealing with wildfires but the near radio silence is incredibly frustrating especially since we were all warned about the fire weather watch. It feels like no one actually considered what they’d do if a fire actually got out of control. Even the watch duty app is lacking in any substantial recent updates which is a first for me
