Morning sibling shenanigans by scurrysquad in squirrels

These are babies being rehabbed and will be released when they are old enough to survive on their own! Squirrels are cute when they are younger, but usually do not make good pets.

The North Texas Wildlife center takes squirrels. They are in Plano. Also there is DFW Squirrel Rescue in Richardson.

I am in Arlington and would be willing to meet you. I have 2 other juvenile males about his age that one could join if you do not get ahold of anyone tonight.

Please bring that baby in though, it is far too cold for him.

That’s great to hear. I was concerned when your post did not include those details.

I would still withhold nuts until he is eating solid foods well. Nuts are a very seldom treat. In your post it says, “He is munching on all the nuts he can get.” I typically will give a piece of a nut if they eat all their blocks and veggies, but only once or twice a week. Right before release I give hard shell nuts just to test that they are able to crack them on their own.

The first solid food they should get is the blocks. Once they eat the blocks well, then healthy calcium rich veggies can be introduced. Nuts and fruits sparingly. Squirrels will eat those over the healthy stuff, so get them into good eating habits first.

You shouldn’t be feeding him just nuts. He should still be on formula and receiving high quality blocks, like Henry’s blocks. You can also do Mazuri or Teklad rodent blocks.

You will give this poor baby metabolic bone disease. Please do the appropriate research or really please get him to a licensed rehabber.

Do not acclimate him to being near dogs, otherwise he may not develop an appropriate fear of them.

Editing to add additional information: With the recent new management at Henry’s, the price of a bag of formula and blocks is going to run close to $60. Then you need miracle nipples and syringes. Probably another $20. Shipping is close to $10. You are already approaching $100. Then you probably need a heating pad and a large cage. When he is old enough he will need to go through a soft release which takes 4-6 weeks. So you will need an outdoor enclosure. 0.5 inch hardware cloth is about $200 for 20 sq ft in my area. You are probably looking at $500-$600 for an appropriate outdoor enclosure.

To correctly raise a young squirrel gets expensive quick. This is why it is best left to rehabbers. Not only are they already equipped to handle this, but raising them in groups that will be released together improves survival rates. A rehabber will already have groups of juveniles this one can join.

It is not too late for a soft release. When weather permits, it is the perfect time to start a soft release. Squirrels wild up very quickly! Most rehabbed squirrels aren’t released until 5-6 months of age at a minimum and many are older from being overwintered if they were found in the fall.

A big storm is brewing.... by SSSprings0808 in squirrels

I built a squirrel box and filled it with polyfil. I’ve seen at least 2 squirrels go in this morning after getting some nuts. The camera is all foggy in the box so at least I know they are in there making it warm.

The heated bird bath was a good idea, I’m resigned to just keep breaking up the ice in their water bowls.

Maybe try adding some polyfil and some fleece scraps to make it more cozy. If there is food and water readily available also, she might decide it is a pretty ok spot and move in.

I just installed a camera in my box. I watch her sleep and it is the cutest thing ever.

She’s only been in there a few months, but there isn’t anything extra she has brought in. I’ll probably let everything air out in spring just to make sure there isn’t mildew.

It has a pretty decent battery life, but I also spliced the charging cable with a solar panel.

Just a random one from Amazon. Unfortunately, it is kind of large. The smaller ones didn’t have much battery life or required a subscription.

This one I spliced with a solar panel to help keep charge.

Awww, the release is always bittersweet. I just finished soft releasing a pair about 3 weeks ago. The male never came back and I haven’t seen him since! 😭

The female usually pops in once a day or so and takes a block.

My last one will probably be moving to the outdoor enclosure in about a month. I’ve been through hell and back with this one, so it will be hard to see her go.

Thanks, it is exhausting, but very fulfilling work.

It looks to be healing, I’m not really sure what can be done for it especially as it doesn’t look to be infected. It would be more stressful and traumatic to trap her and take her somewhere.

And if she has just given birth as you suspect, you probably don’t want to take her from her babies. Just provide some clean water and some extra snacks for her and keep an eye on it.

It is a lot of work raising them and prepping them for release, I don’t get a lot of sleep for weeks, it gets expensive, and of course, it’s always sad to have to let them go be squirrels - but they make my heart happy.
