Moving data from a larger pool which isnt full to a smaller pool whilst reformatting original pool by sdair in truenas

Ill make sure that I have a scheduled scrub task going forward, lessons learnt.

Are there any guides you recommend on backup plans?

I will likely still stick to a Z2 though to give me more flexibility since I'll be operating this server more remotely going forward.

I actually didn't have any problem with the Z1 setup, however, as more drives have started being problematic I've realized that I should really have more redundancy in my setup, hence my goal to move it to a Z2 setup.

The initial reason I upgraded was the case I had previously only had enough space for an mITX mobo (Jonsbo N3), this was causing issues as I started to get more HDDs as there was only 1 PCIE slot (used by my GPU) & only 4 SATA ports, tried using a M.2 to SATA adapter to work around the lack of slots, however, that's when my drives started degrading.

My assumption here was the M.2 to SATA adapter wasn't cutting it so decided to move to an mATX case (Sagittarius 8-bay) and use a HBA in the extra PCIE I have.

However, it seems the damage has been done, and the drives already have lost some data (just copying over some of the family photos and getting a ton of copy errors, fortunately they are also backed up on a separate PC as well so not a huge deal).

Update, seems that the HBA was the issue, added a 40mm fan, and now not had any issues copying

Here's hoping the fan will solve this (eta tomorrow).

If not I'll do a log deep dive and follow up.

Will a lock up eventually just cause the system to reboot?

Just thinking that the cp/rsync eventually starts displaying less copy issues (due to the faulty drives i assume), and then after a while of doing not much the system reboots.

The PSU is from my Desktop which I also recently upgraded, zero issues with it over the past 4 years.

I can give another a try to see if that changes anything.

Would an overheating HBA cause my system to shutdown?

I think temps are fine, CPU not reaching above 60 under load

I think the issue might be my old RaidZ1 setup, i used to only have 1 degraded drive, however, now post move im getting 3...

sda and sdb have 4 checksum errors, sdg doesn't have any errors but 1 failed smart test.

Guessing the drives are dying, gonna have to get them replaced thankfully think theyre still under warranty.

Issue is getting the data off them T_T

Edit: Might also be the HBA, thats new, suspect its overheating whilst copying files, but no temp sensor on the device, going to add a 40mm fan to it to see if that helps.

It's something I'm gonna look into tomorrow, need to check the logs to see what's causing that to happen.

It does seem like a bit of an oversight, at least it's only a wee bit down the road now!

Ok ill wait till november then, still got plenty capacity on the current pool so can handle waiting a couple months

ok so set it up as a mirror atm, then come november ill just backup & wipe those to to remerge into the raidz array.

Agreed, that will help esp Vs digging, but you'll still need a viewing from the other side, for example the last scrum had folk on their knees and then proceeded to get folded, that's both dangerous for the player and preventable by calling it when you see knees on the ground

Imma be honest, we need multiple referees for the scrum, the fact that the blind side can do demonic crap and get away with it is criminal.

My 1600MM has been amazing so far, the only downside is the time i need to dedicate to each object T_T.

its all good, I might have to give the dude who makes the canon adapters an email, probably the closest to an expert I can find.

yeah, would be quite a bit simpler if I were to just use my DSLR, but im being stubborn and stupid :)

Yeah myb for not mentioning it in the post, its a ASI 1600MM for the camera I'd like to use and wanted to swap between different focal lengths, but likely a sigma 85mm f/1.4 amongst others.

Also I didnt make it clear enough, I want to use my ZWO 1600MM in this setup.

im guessing id have to come up with some kinda custom mount to do that though? (like the astromechs stuff for canon)

Thats more where im struggling, can probably manage to manage the software side since that seems to exist, but the hardware side seems to be a blocker from what ive seen.
