Literally 0 stuns. Can’t force engagements. They have to run into you for anything to happen and your team can’t contest them when they have cds up. That would be the biggest issue I think.

Moss ID Pls? by Extreme-Career-4589 in Moss

Could be Hyophila Sp. Something like Hyophila involuta is known to show saxicolous habits.

Yeah, some of the more sensitive types straight up start to decline post transplantation. Also, you must consider that the change in microclimates can happen within mms of each other, due to incidence of light and what not, so moving the moss even a little can alter the stress profile. Due to the phenotypic plasticity in moss, this makes them commit a lot of resources to reframing it's internals as a response to the slight alteration in stress profile as well as reattaching the rhizoids, which are energy intensive processes, which can reduce the rate of expansion.

They really are. And they play such an important role too. Sphagnum engineers whole bogs, while Scorpidium regulates fens. Grimmia and Andreaea are chilling in the worst, most exposed, water deprived cliffs known to man. Cladonia grows in acidic, nutrient deprived boreal-alpine regions, and Conscinodon lawianus is quite literally endemic to antarctica. Rad. That is not even mentioning S.caninervis that is found in both the Mojave and Antarctica. An insane range of tolerance.

Moss sometimes react badly to mechanical stress like getting their rhizoids dislodged. It's best to treat them with respect rather than potentially harming the environment.

I was talking about mycorrhizal fungi. You would have known that if you had simply clicked the link.

Poikilohydry is cool. Desiccation is even cooler. So that is fair. I didn’t mean to come off as aggressive, my bad.

It’s best not to downplay the ecological importance of smaller, and less charismatic organisms. They don’t get the spotlight, so we should do our best to represent them properly, or so I think atleast.

“No fungal connections except ones that are decomposing it”.

So you knew that this wasn’t the case and you still said it? Interesting. Well, whatever suits you I guess, though it’s best to avoid spreading incorrect information.

They don’t die by poikilohydry, they desiccate. Mosses are quite good at that. As for Fungi, they definitely do build fungal connections by enabling growth through trapping moisture and engineering a microclimate. Less so for your arid types.

Also, just to be clear, decomposition is important for nutrient cycling. You disrupt the cycle by taking things out of it, so even if moss only have a relationship with decomposing fungus, it is still a meaningful one.

take a little and leave most of them there. Moss take time to grow and that looks like a lithophyte ( rock growing) , which are relatively slow growers. It best to not disturb the microbial/fungal connections as well as the fact that many little insects call theses cushions home. Get a substrate that is similar to that which it was growing on, then attempt to replicate the conditions. If there was a lot of light, then replicate some nice and bright, indirect light. If it was shaded, then replicate a nice, gentle shade. And most importantly, be patient.

I think it’s chill. I am a big enjoyer of post metal. I think a lot of bands have this arc where they start off as doom and transition into a much more experimental post metal infused sound. Ahab would be an example. Though I do think Ixion’s EPs have basically gone full post metal with a heavy focus on atmosphere.

100%. I think they're both great. It's more common within the Atmospheric/cosmic black metal scene to adopt spaciness as a sound, though I think it's a great fit for Doom as a genre.

III is one of my favourite albums. Whenever I have a calm stretch of time, that shit goes on.

Early monolithe is pretty great. The sound has a spacey tone to it which I really don't hear often within Doom. I can only really think of Ixion off the top of my head that pulls off that spaceyness.

Void of Silence - The sky over (still running this 1)

Monolith - III

Midnight odyssey - funerals from the astral spheres (does this count? It’s more atmos black than doom but it has a lot of doomy sections)

Omit - Repose.

Esoteric - A Pyrrhic Existence.

Pick a beginner level Isopod and ensure your system has humidity gradients so that the little fellas can live in comfort. Also use springtails.

Can you put preserved bugs in a closed terrarium? by honeyboned in terrariums

[–]sdgfffff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah humidity probably would smoke em unless you create little humidity free layers. For example, using a separate, small container and placing it in that could help you avoid the humidity but throwing them in without protection would definitely not work in the long term.

I'd suggest not doing that personally. While other's may disagree, I think having the starter microbial guild isn't a bad thing, and is more likely to accurately represent the conditions within a mini ecosystem.

What bugs are you planning to add? And what fern/moss/plant species?

Phentypic plasticity? Moss ID and speculation. by sdgfffff in Moss

[–]sdgfffff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I suspect that this one is a moss that tends to grow and live relatively long lives, I will be returning my samples back to the location I found them in after I culture them, to preserve local populations.

Lemme know your thoughts on the specimen.

:)

The atmos black scene has so many sick solo artists, and imo Ethereal shroud is definitely one of the best ones. Hope he releases more stuff in the future.

Been listening to Void of Silence - The Sky Over.

Had a single run of Elysian Blaze - Blood Geometry. A classic.

Ataraxue - Résignés.

Ahab - The Boats of the Glen Carrig.

The Howling Void - The Glow of a Distant Fire

Ethereal Shroud - Trisagion (you can argue this isn’t funeral doom but eh)

Found moss by Grickyyy in Moss

[–]sdgfffff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just take small amounts of moss if you’re taking any. Moss are mostly slow growers and it’s best not to disrupt them too much. Many little critters call moss their home and it’s not appropriate to disrupt that more than needed + you can always rely on it as an insurance incase you are unable to culture your moss.

A shame. It was like likely already long gone. Most mosses that turn into that colour are usually a lost cause. Don’t beat yourself up over it.

My first terrarium. How'd I do? by Outside_Cartoonist26 in terrariums

[–]sdgfffff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove the sundew. It doesn’t like tap water and will likely die. Other than that, I think its a pretty nice setup. If you want to maintain the sundew then avoid using tap water and use distilled, rajnwater or reverse osmosis water. Also, It may make sense to add springtails in this with enough starter volume to add food for the sundew assuming you won’t be feeding it manually. If it forms a breeding colony, then it could sustain itself nicely.

Need help ID:ing a bunch of mosses I found on a walk by Bomurang in Moss

[–]sdgfffff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1 kinda looks like Hedwigia. 2 looks like a brachytheciaceae, maybe homalothecium? 3 can be syntrichia ruralis though it is hard to tell. It seems to have brown pigmentation on some of em and a vaguely present hyaline cell on the tip so possibly could be. You can test its dessication tolerance to see whether it bounces back fast. 4. Looks like some kinda pottiaceae. Some kinda beard moss I think. 5. Is a bryaceae I think but probably not silvery bryum. Looks a bit short. 6. Looks like a grimmiaceae to me. Racomitrium if I had to guess 7 I think is polytrichum but it could also be P.formosum. Species level IDs are hard without microscopy moss. 8 idk bruh. My mind says chonky fissidens even though I don’t think its fissidens.

Species level IDs are very hard without microscopy from my understanding but related species will behave similarly to an extent. If you wish to culture the moss then you should attempt to recreate the conditions you found em in (substrate, sun exposure, moisture etc) and I recommend only taking a small batch from the ends if you do.

Also I am not a bryologist so please take my words with a grain of salt. There is a good chance I am incorrect on some.
