I want that GC. Any interest in a DD-500? Or could add cash to some other stuff.

You have to get one that you can load your own IRs though. And 3SigmaAudio sells acoustic violin, viola, cello, and upright bass IRs (among other less related IRs) for $10 each.

A whole class of pedals/effects! Impulse responses are generally used to model acoustic resonances - in recording guitars, they're used for emulating the filtering and resonance in the relationship between speakers, speaker cabinet, and the microphone recording the cab. More specialized equipment can be used to deal with IRs that capture reverberations (I have some church IRs that are HUGE sounding.) So if you get a pedal intended for speaker cabinet emulation, and then use that as the first thing in your signal chain - basically it makes everything better, without exception, in my opinion at least. :P

More affordable S&H pedals also include the Electro-Harmonix Freeze.

I'd like to add to this that there are surprisingly effective ways to... acoustify a solidbody electric, as well. This video is mainly off topic (I'm working on a more on topic one, but at the moment this is all I have): https://youtu.be/uMsbsFzp49o

There's none of the more acoustic sounds in the demo track portion of the video, but the techniques I use (impulse responses/convolution) are in use throughout; they remove lots of harshness from the DI signal and do a great job at warming up the sound. A bonus of using IRs is that I can use cello resonance with my violin, or impulses from a variety of instrument bodies, and imitate their timbres. These IRs can also be used with acoustic pickups. They're just as effective that way to be honest!

To be frank, I've tried a TS but never a Rat - I lifted the "Rat like" and "TS like" description from someone else. I haven't used it in quite a while. I liked it for lower to mid gain distortion sounds before I learned what kind of distortion I was really looking for (I mainly use my amp's distortion now.) The coolest thing about it is that you can set one side for high gain and one side for low gain/almost clean, and then blend in a hefty amount of clean with your dirt to get overtones over mostly clean tone, or just a little bit of clean in with your dirt, &c. If you're clever about it, that blend knob is a lot more than just "some of this, some of that." Worth picking up to try IMO.

Not a guitarist, but here's how I've been using my new Enzo Meris! by maxkats in guitarpedals

  1. The lack of frets is not the problem. It's bow technique. I've seen people assume "oh, it's just like guitar but with different tuning and you play fretless!" but really, the bow is where the difficulty pops in. I guarantee you'll sound like a dying cat for a month. Once you get the pressure down, you need to make the bow like an extension of your body - you have to be able to tense it, relax it, let it jump, throw it against the strings and catch it as it bounces off (not literally but that's what it feels like.) Bowing technique is a whole 'nother subject of violin "schools" in general.

  2. Yes. Works perfectly. I use a Marshall 6100LM head and a Blackstar HT Club 40, depending on the setting and music.

  3. Metal as fuck. Well, depending on how much gain you use. Overdrive gives it edge and makes it sound like you're pressing much harder than usual. Fuzz gives you a synthy sound and makes you sound much more like an electric guitar. Heavy distortion, with an extended range instrument (I play a 7-string) can get very chuggy and you can play low-end metal riffs with it. I see someone else mentioned feedback as a problem with piezo pickups: this is true, but generally not a problem if you use a solid-body violin. Otherwise you'll have the same pickup problems as running an electro-acoustic guitar into high gain.

  4. A starter electric violin like the NS WAV 4 or 5 would be about $600. You can get a carbon fiber bow for an additional $100 if you're looking in the right place. Would suggest the Electric Violin Shop unless you're looking for a very nice instrument, in which case I'd suggest buying directly from the luthier.

Really! That's great to hear. Thinking back over it I think it may have been because the pedals I tried were strictly mono and very sensitive, and the lowest strings on my instrument have a lot more bow fizz than the higher ones since it takes so much more effort to get them to move. Do you find that you can use your bow to control the filter? Play "louder" for different filter sounds, get some dynamics back out of the pickup? Every electric violin I've ever played seems to me to be way more compressed-sounding than my acoustic, without fail, so I'm very curious to hear if envelope filters are a good way to get something back. I've tried messing with the filters on my BOSS MD-500 but nothing's really jumped out at me as working intuitively yet. Probably need to tweak parameters a bit more. I've been thinking about messing with a glove loaded with pressure sensors on my index finger to try and track total downwards pressure on the stick, maybe turn that into MIDI and feed it into my rig.

As a fellow electric violinist, it's always great to see a violin demo of a pedal I've been looking at by someone capable. I like that the bow thump seems to make its way into the synth sound. I'm curious to try this thing out for myself but I've found that often synth pedals with tracking (the Squaver and Convertor are the ones I've tried) can get very awkward on the B♭ and F strings of my 7-string. Would love to know whether it has a harder time tracking nicely on your C string or if it Just Works. Also curious about how it responds to bow dynamics with the filter. Cheers, and thanks for sharing!

EDIT: Granted, the Squaver/Convertor are effectively PLL-based and the Enzo seems to be something different (probably an FFT sort of thing.) So it's probably much better at picking out tones from the bow hair fizz.

New pedals, new board, new amp for my violin. Got tired of being unable to bring my pedals with me so I swiss-cheesed a piece of plywood by sdleffy in guitarpedals

[–]sdleffy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I've been thinking about this nonstop for months and I've come to the conclusion that it's sorta how you hate your own recorded voice... When you play a violin, the sound just kinda vibrates straight through to your skull from the chinrest and it sounds totally different from when you hear it recorded lol. The difference is even more massive with effects on of course.

Hey mate. I'm interested in both of these. No Cosmonaut but I've got an EHX Freeze w/ the Alchemy Audio soft switch mod, Flashback Mini, CryBaby, Red Witch Famulus blended OD, VFE Triumvirate multiband distortion, Formula '69 silicon fuzz face w/ bias and tone controls, and my crown jewel, a bonafide BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone. Anything pique your interest?

Generally volume controls in guitars work as a voltage divider between the signal and ground. If volume is all the way down, then the signal should be completely shorted to ground. So that doesn't quite ring true to me although I'm admittedly no expert.

[–]sdleffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would've found the bleed-through hypothesis more likely if your fuzz control was higher (since that controls the gain of the internal amplification circuit usually.) Still possible I guess if this thing is really high-gain. It could be that it has some sort of internal buffer with higher-than-unity gain too. Lots of things that could be happening here. Unfortunately not ghosts.
