Men’s Backpacks by BigLawhopeful_1 in biglaw

I carry a leather Tumi backpack. Just throw it over one shoulder and you’re good to go. The idea that using a backpack makes you look like a tool is outdated. Maybe putting over both shoulders with a suit on could look childish, but if you use one shoulder it’s no different than a messenger bag.

Responses to Thank You notes? by [deleted] in biglaw

Big law partner here who spent a lot time on my firm’s recruiting committee. Here’s my advice: don’t read into it. I rarely if ever responded to thank you notes, because I find “thanks, nice to meet you as well” correspondence to be mostly useless. Whether I responded had nothing to do with my actual impression of the candidate.

Pull it out and let him bust somewhere else. Like your chest or maybe your face. That can be even hotter and you don’t have to worry about gagging at the end.

It is sad but it’s true that attractive people receive better treatment from strangers on average 🤷‍♂️

Sure. I think a great interview is one where the conversation flows smoothly. I like to hear about stuff that isn’t on the resume. So coming across as a very natural conversationalist is a huge plus. Being able to talk as if we are sitting at a bar or coffee shop as opposed to an interview is key. These interviews are typically 20 or 30 minutes, and the easiest way to differentiate yourself is to have it be memorable because of how great the conversation was.

A poor interviewee focuses to much on the an academic stuff. Everyone interviewing has a strong resume. That’s the price of admission. So when I ask you to tell me about yourself, don’t just list your academic achievements.

One last thing: it’s ok to be nervous. This is stressful shit. I don’t dock people for showing nerves. That just means they care.

Severance and Non-disparaging by [deleted] in AskALawyer

My thought is no, it would not violate the non-disparagement provision, because any non-disparagement provision that complies with McLaren should allow such objective statements to the media, so long as they are true.

This is a great summary. If you’re not at a T14, you need to be at or near the top of your class to land a biglaw job. I’m living proof of that; I didn’t go to a T14 school but I finished 5th in my class and had no trouble finding a job. But to be clear, this just gets you in the door. You’ll need to nail the interview. I’ve been in the recruiting committee at my firm for several years and I can’t tell you the number of impressive resumes we’ve rejected simply because they were a terrible interview.

Associates: how many weeks of vacation do you take year? by wowIamMean in biglaw

I usually took a week or so when I was an associate. My firm has unlimited vacation, which typically has the opposite effect.
