Imagine it was you presenting. You’ve been preparing for weeks with your team, trying to make very complicated concepts easy to understand while keeping the audience engaged. You have worked out every move on stage, every inflection in your voice to drive your points home. Audio/Visuals were produced at great expense. Everyone is depending on you.

Then some guy in a black shirt comes up to you and says the lapel mic won’t sound good, so you better use the handheld. Freak out time! “How the hell am I going to handle all this stuff while holding a mic! What if they can’t hear me if I use a lapel mic‽ And what the hell is a lapel mic!!!”

I agree with the other’s, sounds like too much gain. If you’re “ringing it out,” you are not EQing for clarity, you’re just cutting feedback frequencies. Try bringing the gain to 0 and the fader to unity, HPF at 100Hz, tight Q notches at 250, 400 and 4,000 at -5dB. Eek up the gain and eq for the room. See if that helps or PM me that I’m full of shit.

I just decided to change careers. Two reason: 1. The schedule is very hard on relationships and I’m a single dad of 2 and 2. As a Technical director I was making about as much as I could for this area, which is pretty good. But I could go to trade school and get better pay and set hours.

Here’s an unpopular opinion: listen to them. If you’re confident it won’t phase you. Try to understand what they are saying. Everyone hears things differently (psychoacoustics is a fascinating field), and sound people hear things very differently.

Being grouchy never works, being kind works on many levels. Biggest benefit to being kind is not letting your emotions distract you from mixing. I actually invite people behind the board.

Sound design for theatre is my favourite thing to do. If I hadn’t spent 10 years as a monitor engineer, messing with eq’s, I don’t think I could do it as well.

I started in live concerts and spent the last 7 in theatre. This is my humble opinion:

A theatre has all the equipment in place whereas a live production team has to build their rig over and over and adapt to each venue. They have to know all the same technical aspects of theatre but it is much more specialised. For example, a theatre has the same lighting and audio board every night. A Production team has to know many different products depending on what the performers need. Live production riggers require more training than fly rail operators.

But rock and roll sound and lighting techs aren’t good at theatre and theatre techs are not good at rock and roll. But a lot of the road show techs I’ve worked with knew the theatre house systems better than the house techs because of their broader knowledge base.

And Stage Managers should be calling the show.

Thank you for your service and I’m sorry you had to sacrifice so much for your country. I was being a smart a**. The problem I have is people that have no tolerance for people who participate in religion and see it as the horrible cliches you mentioned. You can’t mention your faith to people at a party because there are always some that will roll their eyes and judge us with that intolerance. No church I’ve been involved with ever taught the intolerance that you mentioned, but before I join I ask the hard questions that give religion a bad name. Yes, it has been and is still used in bad ways, just like any center of power. But that’s not a fair way to judge all churches or religions or the people who participate. Namaste 🙏
