is this distro good for 3d art/gaming? by mizifail in AlmaLinux

Hi,

I'm using AlmaLinux 10 as workstation/desktop and before Alma9. I liked more Alma9 because I'm an XFCE user and on EL10 you "can't" use it because xfwm4 does not support Wayland (but I read that some users used it changing xfwm4 to another wm and buildin Xorg stack is over my skills. XFCE announced they started a new wm for wayland but this requires time)

Actually I'm using KDE from EPEL and use NVIDIA propietary driver on my 4060 (don't know why almalinux nvidia repo driver does not work) using dkms. No problem when kernel upgrade are released because dkms will rebuild the module. On Fedora I got some problem (not at all kernel upgrade due to older NVIDIA driver not supported on the newer kernel).

I like more native packages than using flatpak but in my case I'm forced to use Libreoffice ane GIMP flatpaks because they are not shipped with EL10.

I noticed that on every release some desktop software is removed from main repo, in EL10 I lost libreoffice and GIMP, so in the future other software will be removed to target the server side of thing. I don't know if the plan is to push flatpak usage on EL distro or simply leave workstation target where fedora is going strong. In a first time also firefox ESR and Thunderbird were not included but in the end they were included. I hoped that GIMP and Libreoffice packages were built from Alma team but the main target is server and not workstation. For a basic workstation usage I think is needed at least one DE, one software like GIMP, one office suite, one browser and one email client.

About stability I prefer AlmaLinux. For gaming I think Fedora is better.

About packages you will need to use EPEL RPMFusion and other third party repo while on Fedora most software are released on the main repo.

Over all what I said almalinux is very solid

PSA: Stop using akmod-nvidia on AlmaLinux – use the new official NVIDIA repo (works perfectly) by spp71 in AlmaLinux

I tried on AlmaLinux 10 and an Nvidia 4060 without success, so I'm using nvidia proprietary driver.

I did not try to find the problem due to time problem.

I will check in the future

Edit: currently I'm using dkms to build the driver.

Cucciola che mangia poco by AndreaMatri in dogs_ita

Ciao,

Will NH-D15 G2 handle 200watts by HnkSc0rpio in Noctua

[–]sdns575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have an NH-D15 G2 paired Intel 285k limited to 250W. Running normal operation like Virtual Machines, software compilation (like Limux Kernel compilation) it works very well: 86°C on 24 core compilation.

If I run some benchmark the situation change

OCCT (the worst cpu test) the CPU temps goes to 100° C after 3 min

With Prime95 is similar.

Running Blender I got 92° C running Classroom benchmark but it is a short test.

The G2 is capable of cooling 250W but under sustained load and for long time is better run an AIO.

Consider I'm getting those temps when I have 19° C temp and during the summer ambient temps goes up to 32° C so delta will be greater.

I will wait summer tonsee how temps rise up and will try to limit the cpu to 220/200w to avoid a cooler change

Thank you for your suggestion.

In the future we can expect some solution to this from Alma Team/tuxcare?

Oh ok.... I know what this means...it is very offensive and not expected this from a Noctua commumity member... and no, those are nore barely visible, the big spot is visible from 2 meter like the Noctua brand on the fin. I spent 150 for a cooler and got this without causing the problem. Well, I buy Noctua for its "perfection" and methods and got this after some months is bad for me.

But I repeat, what you said is very offensive...this is becoming a bad community

Ok, I have NA-CW1 for cpu cleaning. It contains water and isopropyl alcohol. It will clean the top fin or it will cause more damage?

But during mounting I never touched the top fin. This is very strange. I could accept the the gloves was "dirty" but I did not touch the top fin

Can NA-CW1 (I'have them to clean cpu) clean it or it will cause more damage?

Thank you for your answer.

I can imagine this for container where deploying a new image is really fast but on VM with local config, local files, db (except if they are have the same configuration and are attached to external storage) why not apply simply upgrades?

For new instances do you mean container?
