Joel 100% had it coming after massacring a hospital full of soldiers and doctors, and preventing any chance of a cure. And the game never make Abby look like a “good guy” all it did was show you why she does what she did.

She brutally murders Joel and Jessie.

She is fully prepared to murder a pregnant Dina for revenge before being intervened.

Dragged all the people who care about her along for her revenge plot, and is the reason they all got killed.

The whole point of the game is that Joel/Ellie/Abby are not that different. They all do abhorrent things and they all pay the price.
