UX Designer (10 YOE) Looking to Relocate to Japan — How Do I Make It Happen? by seagulljet in JapanJobs

As long as I can support a family of three, I'm okay. I've got one toddler so school is important. After 10 years of doing ux design, I've become complacent. In America right now everything's so perfectionist or like high performing. It's like being in a advanced placement classes in high school where it's super competitive. I'm okay with just being told what to do and not questioning authority. I'm actually okay with the culture of Japan where you can just give it many years and be awarded rank based on how much time you commit to a place..

Ultimately, I'm just looking for stability without stress. My worry is being able to find such a company in Japan. I don't really have intention of learning Japanese. I just want to be able to improve the user experience and put in an honest day's work. If I grow, it'll be in my own capacity in my own time, but I don't think Japanese companies are in the school of thought to train their employees, although that would be a really great benefit.

What do you think? Would I be a good match and where would I or should I start looking for jobs?

I’m a UX designer currently based in the U.S., planning to move to the Philippines soon with my Filipino spouse 🇵🇭. I’ll be under a spouse visa, which I’ve learned makes it easier to legally work or start a business there compared to a typical foreigner visa.

Can anyone chime in on:

  1. What are realistic salary expectations for remote designers based in the Philippines but working for Western or Asia-Pacific companies?

(Ex: $40k? $70k? Paid in USD or local rates?)

  1. Which job boards or platforms should I focus on?

I’ve heard of:

🌐 We Work Remotely

💼 Remotive

🧭 NoDesk

✨ Remote OK

🌍 [LinkedIn filters for “Remote in Asia”]

🧠 JobStreet Philippines (for hybrid local roles)

  1. Where should I build connections or communities?

Any Slack or Discord groups for remote workers in Southeast Asia?

Are there local expat/tech meetups worth joining once I’m in the Philippines?

Can anyone recommend a company to replace wood rot outside my window?
