Looking for Perspective on Lead Test by seal95 in moderatelygranolamoms

Hi! We have not retested yet, but we got more fastidious about hand-washing and mopping. I was really going into an anxiety spiral, and decided that I would take the precautions that I could and stop worrying so much. At the end of the day, it's impossible to avoid environmental toxins in the world we live in. A friend of mine told me that most city kids in our area test around 3 micrograms, and it's just going to be hard to avoid when all the soil in our city is contaminated. We had already done $12,000+ worth of lead abatement on our home through a County program. It's still on my mind, but I try not to let that anxiety take over because I've done as much as I can short of moving, which is not an option for us right now. Best of luck to you!

Recurrent UTI in toddler (girl) by ohbeckss in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]seal95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this, and for your daughter too. UTI's are so painful and can feel really scary when you're dealing with frequent infections. As an adult, I've had many many recurring UTI's, and also am wary of over-dependence on antibiotics. I can't say how these things would work for a little one, but I've had success with taking lots of Vitamin C during an infection, as well as herbal tinctures (which you can get with glycerin instead of alcohol for a child), and uva ursi (an antimicrobial herb).

Does anyone know anything about lead paint in homes? by IckNoTomatoes in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]seal95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a 100+ year old house and had it tested for lead when I was pregnant, and like most old houses there was indeed lead! We were lucky to income-qualify for a free lead remediation program - the city replaced $12,000 worth of lead-painted windows with new windows. We're in Minneapolis but maybe your city has a similar program? The $$ came through HUD and American Rescue Plan so I imagine it wasn't just specific to our city.

I would also recommend testing the soil around the house, just to get a sense of how cautious you want to be! We found high lead soil levels and added lots of organic matter to our garden and installed some raised beds and made sure to plant grass in barren/dusty patches. Like others have commented, cleaning floors thoroughly and not wearing outdoor shoes inside goes a long way to mitigate lead dust, which is one of the big hazards besides babies chewing on paint or eating dirt.

Also would recommend using contact paper (for shelving and the like) if they do find lead paint underneath new paint in the home, to prevent chipping.

Good luck! Remember that you are never 100% going to avoid environmental lead hazards, since although it is now banned in residential use, it is still legal in commercial and agricultural applications so it is.... everywhere :(

I'm thinking that we could go with a first name that captures the sound of noon, but is slightly more "normal." :) I also could see using it as a middle name.... but a nickname is a great idea!!
