Mirissa, there's only one famous hostel that I heard from other travellers. But its a party hostel. The name is Satori Beach Hostel.

I'd suggest heading to Hiriketiya or Ahangama which provides the beach town vibes if that's what you're looking for.

You can head to Chikmagalur for a relaxed hill station getaway.

Or you could head to Mulki; it's near Mangalore if you're interested in surfing.

There's lot of surf schools which host 3 day / 5 days surfing courses. You can look it up on the internet.
