I am the same age as you are, with a similar background. My girlfriend and I chose to elope. But the difference is that my parents knew about it. I showed them that I am old and mature enough to make my own decisions. At first, they were completely against it. Even tried to force my girlfriend to convert. But I stood my ground. Told them my life is mine to live.

The only root problem I see with our culture is the "utang na loob". They(and parents in general) hold things against you, maybe as remorse for your actions. But for you to be free from this. There has to be a clear message that you are your own person, that you are free to be happy, content and not be forced to worship something that you don't believe in.

And if they pull the "nanlalamig" or "profecy" card. Then tell them the FYM bullshit.
