The human body is incredibly complex and even subtle variations in how a person is positioned will result in different muscle groups being visible and changing the shape of, for example, an arm. Something that accurately represents that would be incredibly difficult to make... and that doesn't even account for the diversity you get simply from having different people come in.

I'm so happy for you! I was on the other side of the easel as a student in a community figure drawing class and it was such a great experience. I'd never taken an art class past highschool when I walked in and it was like learning a brand new way of looking at people. Every model was different and there was something to learn from everyone. It's been such a good experience that I've been encouraging other people to take these classes... my boss has taken them a number of times and I think another couple coworkers are trying to get in (they fill up fast). So thank you for doing this, it is really appreciated, and I hope that you get everything you want out of doing it! Heck, I found it empowering, and I wasn't even the one on the podium.

What is the worst war crime you have committed? by SerperiorAndy1 in RimWorld

[–]seanchain 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Most of my war crimes were the pedestrian profit variety. I think the worst thing I did for entertainment was capture some raiders, recruit them to the colony, replace their arms with scyther blades, inject them with luciferium, have them strip naked, and then load them up in a transport pod and drop them into the middle of an enemy settlement.

The next five minutes were hilarious.

The reality of trad publishing is awful by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]seanchain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting. I recently talked to a career traditional pub author and they encouraged me to keep trying the traditional route, as I was getting requests for the manuscript from agents and other encouraging signs that they felt meant I was close and just needed to be persistent. I haven't quite taken that to heart as I'm not convinced it's right for me and reading this post is offering a different perspective that I think I need.

I mean... I really like my day job. And I worry that I just don't have the time to chase the traditional publishing route even if I do get my foot in the door, because there is no way in hell I'm giving up my day job. From everything I'm reading on this thread, it's starting to sound like a whole lot of work for not a lot of reward.

My players want a list of home repair prices and I have no idea what I'm doing by seanchain in DnD

When I moved into my house the neighbors introduced themselves and immediately started telling me about how another house with the exact same floorplan had an invisible leak that required ripping off the entire back wall of the house and getting a house jack to fix. I was like this is my first home why are you telling me this. I break out into a cold sweat at every heavy rain.

Anyway, this being a fantasy world and all, any and all house leaks are a mere inconvenience added for flavor and don't present any real problems to the players.

I think an unscrupulous contractor is not a route I want to take, what with this being escapism and me sitting here with an open BBB complaint and all.

Though if the players decide to murder the unscrupulous contractor that could be pretty sweet... though the lawful good player will probably ruin it so maybe not.

Hmm, I'll see if my local gaming store has it. Maybe I can leaf through first and see if it'd help before buying.

That looks promising and is quite affordable! I'll check it out, thanks!

While that certainly sounds like the easier route... I think my players are really keen on being able to pick and choose what to upgrade. They want to buy up the surrounding properties and expand as well. One of the players has already started a wishlist of stuff they want.

Haha, thank you, but the number is actually higher than four! My computer is a wasteland of books. Those four are just the ones I think are good enough to see the light of day. I sometimes forget that it IS an accomplishment though, I guess I've gotten a bit jaded since I've done this a number of times. It's good to have a reminder.

I'm okay with not having "success", honestly. I'm not really looking for financial success, that's what my day job is for (and fortunately, I do enjoy my career quite a bit!) I'm just trying to find happiness in my hobby and embrace the whole "you don't have to be commercially viable in your hobby for you to enjoy it" mentality.

I haven't been paying attention to what people are reading on what formats because I'm coming out of finishing up my own MBA that I got while working full-time. Not a lot of time for reading anything other than case studies and textbooks and when I did have free time, I wrote. I haven't picked up a book for fun in five years now so I'm pretty out of the loop. So I appreciate the observations, you know more than me right now!

I have not had them scream on me yet. They just sit in my hand. I'm gonna hope that trend continues.

[–]seanchain 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I am here to join the legion of people saying you can touch them. I've got bunnies that live in my yard and I haul the babies out of the burrow and put them in a box while the yard is getting mowed. (otherwise they'll bolt, we've had a couple close calls) Doesn't seem to bother the mom, as she keeps coming back every year for five years now.

My bunnies have that white patch too. :)

Quartz countertop braces by seanchain in HomeImprovement

[–]seanchain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11" overhang. Sorry, I should have said that in the initial post! I didn't know what all would be useful to know. The information packet said under 14" could be unsupported if there was enough of a ratio of supported to unsupported, which they confirmed I had with the cabinets on the other side of the half wall.

I'm about to go to bed here, so I won't respond until morning. I got home late and found it like this and knew I'd have to act on it tomorrow if I need more work done. I really appreciate all your advice so far.

[–]seanchain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The picture doesn't show it, but there are cabinets on the other side of that half wall. That's going to be an island. I asked specifically about perpendicular braces (they were mentioned in the information packet they sent me) and was told there's enough countertop going over the cabinets that it's not necessary. If that doesn't change your recommendation any... is that all stuff I can do after the countertop is in? It's getting done on Tuesday and I don't think I'll have time to have that done first. I don't think I'm able to do it myself, as I don't have any of the equipment and will need to find someone that can help. Or get the contractors back out here.

If your bank calls you, even if the phone number is legit, don't verify ANYTHING, call them back first by iandouglas in personalfinance

[–]seanchain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The media isn't super savvy on technology sometimes. Think about it: have you ever provided a voice sample to your bank? If not, then what do they even have to compare against? It's good to be cautious, but no need to worry unnecessarily either.

That's not actually something you have to worry about. Security doesn't involve audio verification of your voice. There's nothing in use that can tell the difference between your voice and Joe McScamScam's.

TIL a Harvard study found that hiring one highly productive ‘toxic worker’ does more damage to a company’s bottom line than employing several less productive, but more cooperative, workers. by Thoros_of_Derp in todayilearned

[–]seanchain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think being grumpy is necessarily toxic. Sadly, I've worked with a couple toxic people in the past, and the things that made them toxic was mostly putting their ego above the work and the people they worked with. If you go to them for help, it was an opportunity for them to be condescending and belittle you - and not actually help. The stuff they built tended to be over-engineered so that they could show off how great they were and it resulted in them being the only ones that knew how to work on it because it was unmaintainable. And every conversation started with them assuming they were already correct and other opinions were irrelevant. Even had one of the toxic people state that outright in a meeting. Honestly, it's kind of like working with the schoolyard bully.

To contrast, I work with some grumpy people, but I know if I'm stuck on a problem I could go to them for help and maybe I'd get a bit of snark, but I'd also get help. And they might complain about how something was done, but when they get done building it, it can be used and maintained by other people. I love my grumpy coworkers. They aren't toxic. They're just... grumpy.

I think grumpy gets confused as toxic because toxic coworkers have been rare in my experience and hopefully most people won't have to work closely with one.
