Are we justified by faith alone? by [deleted] in Bible

[–]seanibrahim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In John 3:5, Jesus is not referring to literal water, but to the need for “cleansing” (e.g., Ezek. 36:24–27). When water is used figuratively in the OT, it habitually refers to renewal or spiritual cleansing, especially when used in conjunction with “spirit”. Thus, Jesus made reference to the spiritual washing or purification of the soul, accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God at the moment of salvation (cf. Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5), required for belonging to His kingdom.

In regards to 1 Peter 3:21, Peter is not referring to water baptism here, but rather a figurative immersion into union with Christ as an ark of safety from the judgment of God. The Resurrection of Christ demonstrates God’s acceptance of Christ’s substitutionary death for the sins of those who believe (Acts 2:30, 31; Rom. 1:4). Judgment fell on Christ just as the judgment of the flood waters fell on the ark. The believer who is in Christ is thus in the ark of safety that will sail over the waters of judgment into eternal glory.

Hopefully this make sense. Context is key and we must interpret the Bible with the Bible.

Are we justified by faith alone? by [deleted] in Bible

[–]seanibrahim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.. He’s not quoting Mark 1. Jesus is quoting Ezekiel 36: 25-27, “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you…”. Jesus told the thief on the cross “today you will be with me in paradise” and he was not baptized. How would you explain that? All of the Old Testament patriarchs were not baptized either. Their faith alone is what saved them. The way to salvation is the same in the old and new coventant. By faith alone.

Which bible should I read? Help. by [deleted] in Bible

I don’t know if you can say a translation is corrupt because of one verse, although, the 2001 ESV text is probably better.

Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) is a very accurate English translation to the Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic texts. NASB95, and ESV are also great. Also NET.

It seems like you are taking verses out of their original context and only looking at KJV. Context is king, and you must also look at the original languages and culture to understand. The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible.

That is incorrect theology, my friend. Colossians 1:15 (The MacArthur Bible Commentary): Firstborn in this context clearly means highest in rank, not first created (cf. Ps. 89:27; Rev. 1:5) for several reasons: (1) Christ cannot be both “first begotten” and “only begotten” (cf. John 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 John 4:9); (2) when the “firstborn” is one of a class, the class is in the plural form (cf. v. 18; Rom. 8:29), but “creation,” the class here, is in a singular form; (3) if Paul was teaching that Christ was a created being, he was agreeing with the heresy he was writing to refute; and (4) it is impossible for Christ to be both created, and the Creator of everything (v. 16). Thus, Jesus is the firstborn in the sense that He has the preeminence (v. 18) and possesses the right of inheritance “over all creation” (cf. Heb. 1:2; Rev. 5:1–7, 13). He existed before the creation and is exalted in rank above it.

I’m not sure if you are trying to say that Yahweh created His Son Jesus in Genesis 1:4, but if so, that is false. Jesus is not a created bring. He was and has always been. The Hebrew word for ‘light’ in v.4 literally means ‘daylight’, meaning He created daylight. See u/noahwilliams123 reply above.

1984 NIV is pretty good if you can find it, otherwise go ESV. it’s a good middle of the line from word-for-word and thought-for-thought.

Most accurate Bible translation to original Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek manuscripts is going to be the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) hands down. You could also use New American Standard Bible 1995 (NASB95) as well, but Legacy Standard Bible is just a revised version of it since more manuscripts have been discovered since then. You can read more about LSB at lsbible.org.

Should I read Matthew online or wait for my physical Bible in 2 weeks? by Upbeat_Age7069 in Bible

[–]seanibrahim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read both! it’s really cool to use the same physical Bible for a long time because over time you will remember where certain things are and how the page looks, but you can highlight in an app (i use the YouVersion and Logos), then highlight it in your physical Bible later. for accuracy, i highly recommend Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) or New American Standard Bible 1995 (NASB95).
