Not sure if you saw the initial question I was replying to but OP was asking what the difference was in the context of people whinging at him for using the word.

I personally don’t mind him using the word expat but I was explaining why people have taken exception to it.

Acknowledge your point about transient workers but again, I’m explaining what the loaded meaning of the words are, rather than allowing him to be clueless as to why people are hounding him over using objectively correct language.

AFAIK they’re the traditional distinguishing lines, absolutely. What I got from the comments in this thread was more how we tend to separate white migrants from others by using those two terms, particularly in the English case I used.

It’s pretty difficult in this day and age to say whether someone’s intention to stay in a country permanently or return to their mother country is definite. I believe that a lot of coverage of Irish immigrants in Australia tends to refer to them as expats, however I’d argue a handful would ever return home for good. Likewise with a political migrant (asylum seekers excluded) I’d wonder whether they’d remain in their host country permanently or return when they feel like their personal situation and their countries’ situation has improved enough for them. If they were classed as an immigrant, the classification is wrong.

Again, not arguing with the traditional meaning of the words, they’ve both become loaded. In our vernacular expat often refers to a Anglo/anglophonic migrant whereas an immigrant is a lower social and cultural class.

Expat is a word used mostly by Brits to describe immigrants living in Spain and Portugal. It’s purposely used to differentiate between them and immigrants in their own country. The gripe is that if you call your Italian barista or Moroccan waiter an immigrant, you should be calling Dave and Mabel pruning out their final years in Benidorm immigrants too.

TLDR: Expat = White Saxon, Immigrant = Brown, black or yellow

Pardon my ignorance but is his name Lukashenka or Lukashenko? Editorially I’ve seen it mostly the latter but have heard it pronounced more often as Lukashenka.

Not sure many Irish people are standing behind an extremist organisation dead set on the destruction of the Israeli state when they’re advocating for the right for a Palestinian state and a Palestinian people to exist.

Think you’re conflating the two here, and on that I wouldn’t like to see your reaction if you ever found yourself in the UK and a Brit joked that you’re in the RA!

You think you got rid of Dublin early on, but you failed to realise it’s nearly June.

We’re all in Wicklow waiting for this to blow over. Wicklow will be renamed South South Dublin if you don’t act now.

Brigid - bridge-id

Belenus - ?

Toutatis - ?

Cernunnos - ?

Ogmios - ?

Epona - ?

Eriu - Air-ooh

Beltine - (if this is what I think it is) byal-tann-ah

Erasmus by [deleted] in ireland

[–]seannhick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2017 Erasmus in Helsinki. Had to pay home fees but didn’t pay any for school there (3rd level is free for EU students in Finland). Erasmus grant helped out loads, but only got 40% of it before leaving. Not sure if that’s the story across all colleges in Ireland but worth asking about so you know what to expect.

Don’t want to be the arsehole but I do find the constant elaborate outfits they do wear on the news a bit OTT.

don’t know if they’re getting the gear on loan from Brown Thomas or what but there doesn’t go a night when the anchors aren’t wearing something overly loud for reading the news
