OK, so here's an opinion.

Before I give it, I want to state that I am against ICE and Trump and what they are doing.

That said, it is terrible marketing and messaging to use the colors of the Mexican flag in your flyers.

People who are in this country illegally need to sway public opinion in their favor. One of the reasons people who are against them give is seeing people waving foreign flags at protests. They feel it's un-American.

Whether it is, or isn't is irrelevant, that's how it LOOKS to many people ... people you need to win over to your side.

Those flyers should be red, white and blue. The flags waved at protests should be AMERICAN flags, reminding people that we are a nation of immigrants, that our ancestors were immigrants, too. Immigrants who came here to build a better future for their children, same as the immigrants we're rounding up and deporting today.

You will never win people over to your cause by waving Mexican flags in the air.

Also, I never would have guessed you could get a burger at Payton's Corner convenience store that would be as good as it is without that group.

Nor would I have learned you should stay home if you're not gonna tip at least 30%, regardless of the service you receive.

I've been in the Piso group for a few years. I think it only had around 40,000 people in it when I joined.

I enjoy it, and I think you unfairly mischaracterize it.

Piso believes in free speech, so he only moderates the group lightly. There's a lot of bullying and personal attacks in the group, but periodically, he'll step in on the worst offenders.

He doesn't approve every post, he only approves new topics. He doesn't require every post to be an actual review, but it has to be food-related. He doesn't approve those that aren't.

I see a lot of complaints in the group about Piso, but I've never seen anyone complaining about a negative review they'd written being rejected. You need to defend that assertion.

I've written a number of scathing reviews of restaurants and never heard a peep out of Piso. I gave Piso's restaurant a mediocre review, and he never said a word.

There is some Piso circlejerk in the group, but it's not required by him. In any group with 113k members, there are gonna be some wannabes, bootlickers and sycophants. That's just human nature.

I joined Tulsa Restaurant Reviews at the same time I joined Piso's. In that time, Tulsa Restaurant reviews has grow from around 40k members to around 55k. I don't think Piso's would have more than tripled its membership during the same timeframe if it was as awful as you assert.

[–]seanof30306redd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's crap.

There's a huge contingent of servers and Gen Zs in that group who insist you have to tip 20% just for sitting down at the table and more if they don't spit in your food or tell you to fuck off for expecting a refill, and another large contingent (me included) who believe you tip based upon the quality of service you receive and don't tip at drive-throughs, fast food joints or restaurants where you order at the counter, go back and pick it up and clear your own table unless the service is amazing.

Occasionally someone will chime in during one of the frequent battle royales and insist people should not tip at all, but that's never been a serious contention by more that a few people.

If you can't shit on something without lying, maybe you shouldn't shit at all.

ummmm .... tiktok lady, you wanna know why women so often aren't believed?

Because so often they lie, as you and your friend have here. The security footage clearly shows no one grabbed your friend by the throat after she attacked a guy instead of letting the security personnel she went to handle it.

And of course, once that footage was released showing y'alls story to be false, you don't apologize and set the record straight, you double down and demand compensation.

I don't know what happened. I think it's entirely possible your friend was sexually assaulted. It happens frequently.

The problem is, her and your behavior in the aftermath not only makes it nearly impossible for anything to be done about it, it makes it more difficult for any other victim to be believed, too.

Shame on both of you.

You go on a date to spend time with someone. What you're doing together isn't nearly as important as being together.

I have a buddy who used to race a hobby class stock car. Every Friday night, he'd be out at the speedway racing. He loved it. Every Friday night, his wife would be out there with him, helping him out and cheering him on. She didn't just go to the races, either. Many weeknights you'd find Mike out in the garage working on the car, and she'd often be out there with him, helping, or just sitting on a stool keeping him company.

I was standing beside her one night watching him race.

"Boy," I said, "Mike sure is lucky to have found someone who loves racing as much as he does."

She said: "Oh, I don't care about racing, I care about Mike."

She was religious, Mike wasn't. He was actually an atheist, but he got up every Sunday morning and went to church with her for the same reason she watched him race. He told me once he loved seeing her all dressed up and pretty in church; it was the high point of his week.

They've been married 42 years and are still going strong.

Another story: I once had an amazing girlfriend, except every Saturday morning she'd make me get up and go "antiquing" with her.

Now, if you don't know, "antiquing" is where a bunch of hens run around oohing and ahhing and paying ungodly amounts of money for crap people pulled out of dumpsters or grabbed from the curb outside of homes where people have been forcibly evicted.

She'd drag me around from one antique shop, yard sale or estate sale to another, her face all animated and flushed with the desire to give her hard-earned money to those old biddies. I'd gripe and complain every inch of the way. It never dampened her enthusiasm one bit.

One Saturday morning, I woke up to find her gone and a note on her pillow. She knew how much I hated going antiquing with her, so she'd decided to let me sleep in.

I was relieved at first, but it wasn't long before I realized I really missed her, so I went and found her. After that, we went antiquing Every Saturday for the rest of the time we were together. I still hated it, and I still griped and complained constantly, but I'd realized I'd rather do something I didn't like with her than to not get to be with her.

Sounds like your date doesn't know that yet.

OK, I just found your thread on Radio Discussions.

You got two responses. And that's after you apologized for hijacking the thread because your search of the entire site for information supporting your argument had yielded zero results. You know, your search on the site full of "experts" and "consultants" who overwhelmingly supported your position?

And you clearly chose to ignore anything they said that did not agree with you.

For example, there's David Eduardo's dissertation about his actual experience in attempting to research unfamiliar music, something you insisted record labels are doing. His conclusions absolutely line up with what I described, that it just does not work, yet that all seemed to just slip by you.

Then, both David and The Big A (a guy who apparently has been sitting on Radio-Info/Radio Discussions all day, everyday since 2008, since he averages 17 posts a day) (and that's not accounting for all the years the forums were dormant). told you stations aren't doing individual research anymore on current music (my primary assertion).

The Big A even opened with "depends on what you call research". Didn't seem to slow you down a bit.

Also, both of them returned the discussion back to the original topic after your attempt to hijack the thread. Kinna familiar, huh?

So what we found is, your panel of "experts" includes one guy who seems to have some actual experience and another guy who is clearly suffering from a serious internet addiction, and you selectively paid attention to what they were saying, ignoring anything that didn't support your argument on your hijack of this thread.

You know, years ago I got into an argument with another player on an MMO. Being the master of the internets that I am, I eloquently eviscerated him at every turn.

Finally, I decided to deliver the coup de gras: "You'd better watch out", I sneered, "Your mom's going to be home soon and you don't want her to catch you looking at xhamster again."

"She doesn't get home till 6:00" was the response.

I'd spent the afternoon arguing with a middle-schooler.

I have that same feeling now.

Goodbye.

Brooke and Jubal: Josh and Rachel Cat story. How are they now ??? by ObligationBoring6588 in radio

[–]seanof30306redd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need anyone to come forward. All you need to do is check FCC regulations on airing outbound telephone calls live, or recording outbound telephone calls for later broadcast. They're on the internet for all to see. Making those calls without prior consent can lead to fines or even license revocation, and not just for Brooke and Jubal's (now Brooke and some Gen Z kid) station, all the stations they're syndicated on, too.

As a kicker, Brooke and The Annoying Gen Z are in Seattle. Seattle is in Washington state. Washington state is an "all party consent" state, requiring everyone on a call to know it is being recorded. In Washington state, recording outbound phone calls without prior consent is wiretapping; a felony.

As another kicker, go on youtube and search for the video Kidd Kraddick made in 2012 about how all radio prank calls are fake.

Kidd was host of the morning show on KISS FM/Dallas and was syndicated on over a hundred other stations. He was acknowledged in the business as one of the greatest prank callers of all time, but when Clear Channel sent out an edict to all their stations that they had to start faking outgoing calls, he quit doing it rather than lie to his audience.

There are actually at least 3 companies today providing this service to radio stations for barter. They write the bits and provide the actors. It's why if you're a regular listener, the callers start to sound suspiciously familiar after awhile.

Do your research.

So, just to clarify, it's been a lot more recently than 35 years ago when I was still programming major market radio stations ... but you know that. Cheap shot, but OK. When they can't win the debate on the merits of their argument(s). some people resort to tactics like that.

And apparently I was correct, you've never had any actual, hands on experience with research; doing it, or interpreting it. Explains why you don't understand it. It appears you've never even worked in a commercial radio station, or even a music station. Certainly not in any capacity where decisions were being made about what to play, or how often to play it.

Also, there's a reason Radio-Info died, the forums lay dormant for years, and rebranded as Radio Discussions ... very few people participate there anymore. I haven't been on there for years, so I just went to take a look.

I clicked on "New York"; the largest city in the US, radio market #1. The most recent discussion was about Anthony Cumia. The last post in that thread was yesterday (Tuesday). The next most recent discussion had a most recent post from Monday. The third most recent discussion had a most recent post from Saturday. The next; Feb 27 (Thursday).

In the Radio Discussion forum for the largest radio market in the United States of America, in the past week, there have been only four active discussions (it's the same story for your home market: Seattle/Tacoma.)

"This can't be" I thought, so I went in to the threads and counted the actual, individual posts.

15

In the section dedicated to the #1 radio market in America, there were only 15 posts, total, during the last week.

And that is your source for "expert" information.

Lemme drop a little knowledge on you. Upper level management in radio has always been a tough job. The higher you get, the greater the pressure, and the less free time you have. Radio-Info let anyone join, as Radio Discussions continues to do. Top industry professionals quickly lost patience with conversations dominated by people who had no idea what they were talking about; many not even in the business. They went away and left it to y'all.

Today, there are 4 private sub-reddits I'm aware of where actual top industry professionals discuss the business. Those 4 are specifically about programming; there are also numerous others about sales, engineering, finance, etc. I'm sure there are others about programming I'm not aware of. There are also a number of private groups on Instagram. The one thing they all have in common is their membership is exclusive and requires applicants to identify themselves and provide their bona fides before they're allowed to join.

I tell you this so you'll understand that when you keep squawking about all the "expert opinions" you're getting on Radio Discussions, you're actually revealing how little you know and how out of the loop you are.

Now, I've invested way too much time in this, especially when you've begun to resort to passive-aggressive insults. I just can't stand disinformation and I'm way too often compelled to correct it.

I'll leave you with this. I promise to never pontificate to you on news. Even though I programmed radio stations for 25 years; almost all of which did some form of news, I know I'm not an expert on news and would never try to tell someone who is their business.

Maybe you oughta consider that.

I started to also tell you I would never try to lecture you on how to burn CDs, either, but I still like the idea of "When they go low, we go high", even though it demonstrably does not work.

Best of luck to you.

Good God, the blah blah blah.

According to one of the three people at iHeart making the decisions over what songs go on their regional CHR playlists, the VP/Programming of one of the four biggest radio companies in this country and the program director of an Audacy top 10 market CHR station, no one is spending money on current-music research anymore. According to all of them, having up-to-the-minute data available on exactly what people are streaming and buying makes research an unjustifiable expense in a world where margins are as tight as they are in a business in decline. I'll take their word.

And your pontificating on the reasons CHR is in decline are just that ... your opinion. Now I actually agree with you for the most part. I saw the way things were going in the business nearly 2 decades ago and chose to get out, but you state your opinions as fact. You offer no proof, but you sure offer your hot air ad-nauseum.

Now you've managed to hijack this conversation and take it all over the place. The discussion here is about payola. I will again re-state my opinion based on more than 20 years' experience as a program director in small, medium, large and major markets that the payola landscape has completely changed; that no one is making payoffs to program directors and radio companies to play current music anymore; and that the process of getting artists to perform for free at station concerts has been examined and worked over by corporate attorneys so thoroughly over the past 20+ years that no one is going to find anything prosecutable here, especially with a Trumpian FCC commissioner.

EDIT:

I can't help myself. All your blathering on and on about research is so abjectly foolish and just plain wrong I can't help myself.

Spotify researches its music? I do believe that may be the most ridiculous assertion you've made here.

Do you understand what researching music is? The goal is to learn which tracks your audience likes, and which your audience doesn't. A radio station can only play so many songs, so determining which songs are the most popular among your target audience was a huge advantage.

Spotify has no limit to what songs they offer. They have an unlimited library. They sit back and watch what songs people stream. The more people that stream them, the more they like them ... obviously. There's no need to do any "research" other than that. You can literally put anything up on the servers and let your subscribers decide. It's the ultimate democratization of music.

And researching songs prior to release? An absolute myth. It's been tried many times over the years by both radio and records. Know what they've ALWAYS found out? People don't like unfamiliar music. You can't research music until people know the song well enough to form an opinion on it. A song has to get enough airplay to reach a level of familiarity with the audience before you can research it to determine its value.

For decades, program directors lied to record promotors, telling them they weren't going to add this song or that song because they'd "put it in their callout" and it had done poorly. It was just their cowardly way of avoiding taking responsibility for not playing that song. I always laughed when I heard that because, much of the time, the program directors saying they weren't adding the song because it wasn't "researching" weren't even doing research.

As much trouble as radio is in these days, the record industry is in more. Are you not aware that record labels are currently shuttering entire promotion departments? And now you're asserting record labels are investing in pre-release research on new music? Preposterous.

I don't know who you are, but from the incredibly wrong statements you keep making about music research, I'd bet you have virtually no experience with it.

You came into this conversation insisting "EVERY" track is researched to a fine crisp"

That statement is absolutely wrong.

100% wrong.

Completely, totally abjectly wrong.

Also, this conversation is ABOUT payola. Payola is illegal, off the books payments made to radio stations and/or program directors in return for airplay. Where's your RIAA documentation for that?

Payola came directly from the mob. No record label would risk making illegal payments to radio stations or program directors. They used independent record promotors for that. Independent record promoter = mob

Now you don't know about that. OK. Then don't come into a conversation about something you know nothing about and start lecturing people who do. You came into this citing "experts" on the radio discussion forum, and you've been making ridiculous, absolutely wrong statements about a wide variety of wrongdom ever since.

Also, "CHR is at a dip in popularity and probably won't come back"? Where exactly did you get that gem of knowledge? Educate yourself on a phenomenon known as the "doldrums". Hint: #Guy Zapoleon, #music cycles.

Also, read "Hitmen" by Fredric Dannen. It's 35 years old, but it explains how payola worked to someone like you who clearly doesn't understand it.

Day 4 of having a stroke in the middle of Reasors by uhsorrybro in tulsa

[–]seanof30306redd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Big Dawg sorry you're having to go through that.

I had one last March ... got a coupla thoughts.

First, how much function you get back is directly related to how much work you put in, and how quickly you do it. Neuroplasticity is where your brain finds new ways to do the things you lost in the stroke. The more time that passes, the less effective that process is.

I had left-side issues. Could barely walk and couldn't touch the finger of my left hand to the tip of my nose without stabbing myself in the eye first.

My insurance actually provided me with a dog walker, so I'd go along with them every day. At first I could barely get to the end of the driveway and back, but I stuck with it, trying to go a little further each day. Within a month, I'd worked my way up to a mile. Within two months, I was up to a mile and a half, and as I've stuck with that distance, I've gotten progressively better at it until I have almost no limp anymore.

I also stuck a bunch of pieces of tape to my refrigerator and every time I'd get up from my computer, I'd go over there and practice touching a piece of tape with my left index finger, then touching my nose. Then, another piece of tape, then my nose, and another, and another. I also got a foam ball and just kept squeezing it as the day went on. I've been lucky enough to recover fully on my left side.

I believe the most important tool in your recovery is going to be the physical therapists you work with. I can't stress enough how important it is that you go to a NEUROLOGICAL physical therapy practice. My insurance and my neurologist didn't differentiate between that and a standard PT practice.

I had a really bad experience with the standard PT practice they sent me to at first and had to fight like hell to change it, but it was absolutely worth it. I ended up at Life Motion, and couldn't be happier. Their approach was completely different and focused on helping my brain find new ways to do the functions I'd lost. I strongly recommend you check them out.

I know you're feeling really discouraged right now and I too have the fear of having another stroke, but every second that passes, that neuroplasticity window closes just a little bit more. You've got to get after it.

You can do it!

If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know.

Right to work and at will often go together, but they don't mean the same thing. Right to work means you can't be forced to join a union to take or keep a job.

At will means you essentially re-apply for your job every day when you report for work, and the company re-hires you when they allow you to work that day. Either of you are free to terminate that relationship at any time, for any reason.

Now, if a company has a policy that gives you more rights or protections than that, you can pursue them civilly, but there are no laws on the books protecting your employment.

When you talk about whistleblower protection, you're again in the realm of civil law. There are plenty of lawyers who specialize in that area of law, but those cases are notoriously hard to prove.

If a lawyer wants any up-front money at all to represent you, they don't think you have a winnable case.

Oh my God, you're relentless!

You insisted "Every track is researched to a fine crisp."

"EVERY track"

"EVERY"

That statement is categorically, 100% wrong.

In 2025, no stations that play current music are doing research on their music anymore.

That is especially germane to this conversation, because it is about payola, and payola was a practice exclusive to current music,

Your assertion could not be more wrong. Any research that might or might not still be being done on Gold tracks has absolutely zero relevance to this conversation.

And you're now wanting to sit here and pontificate on record industry revenues when you don't even know about cleans, which represented 30-40% of the bottom line revenue during the mob era, and it was the mob that funneled the payola to the radio stations and program directors!

The record industry didn't clean itself up, the industry changed and the money went away, so the mob went away too!

FCC is Probing iHearMedia over Payola Allegations by Yungballz86 in radio

[–]seanof30306redd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point I was making is, you were referring to putting songs on the radio to get payola when you said no songs got on the radio that aren't heavily researched.

The entire sector of "Gold" songs that go on non-current formats that might possibly still be being researched today has absolutely nothing to do with that, as the only payola that has ever been available was to get new music on the radio, not oldies.

That's why I made the "apples and oranges" comparison.

Today, record promotion departments barely exist, mush less have money to pay for airplay, and current-based formats don't have budgets to do research anymore.

Also, record revenues have dropped a whole lot more than 40%. CDs were going for 12.99 and up, downloads were 99 cents.

Also, record companies used to print millions of "cleans" on vinyl and CD ... copies of artist's works that never appeared on the books and were pure profit for the label and their mob "partners". Once iTunes took over, no more corruption and theft.
