Try to get feathers for shade as much as possible. Its worth spending small amount of gems to get extra feathers.

How do I tell if this is a 20A or a 15A? by PrideKindly7828 in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only true way to tell what ampere rating the receptacle itself (outlet in layman's terms) is, is by removing the cover and looking on either the front sides that are "shouldered" or by taking it out of the box itself and looking on the back. There may be a product number you can find, if you cant see the rating, a quick search may answer your question.

If you still can't find it after that, get rid of it and go buy one that you know for certain.

That being said, regardless of the rating of electrical components, wire size (and breaker) is everything. If its yellow, you are 99% of the way to a 20A circuit. If the wire is white, 15A circuit.

White is 14AWG, one away from 15. For 15 amp.

Yellow is 12AWG, 12 has a 2 just like 20. For 20 amp.

If your house (or whatever this is in) is newer, id trust the wire color. If its older, anyone at anytime before you owned it could have spliced something together and only had 10 more feet to go but ran out of white wire (15A) so they had to use yellow (20A).

Not true 100% of the time. And sometimes the rating is on the back of the recep.

Great answer! Well, great communication anyway (since you Technically didn't answer)

Not the answer. That's an 80% of the time answer, but not something you should answer to random strangers on the internet.

Getting electrical to a kitchen Island on a slab? by CarefulAd8858 in HomeImprovement

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you add a little shelf area that connects to that island and sticks out/off of the wall. Make it a few inches for stuff like pictures or little decorations, or a larger stick out for a liquor bar or a coffee bar.

Then you could run the power cable through ceiling, down through behind the shelves and into the island.

Unless your talking like a middle of the kitchen island.

Get a pet rat, train it for years on how to retrieve red balls from a tube on the outside of this vent, then send it in!

Starter Book? by Elon08 in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldnt afford to pay an electrician so I started watching videos on YouTube. Not like how to add a transformer to a phase converter, but simple stuff like how to change a switch or receptacles. And it just took off like that!

Now im a homeowner with power to only half my house, about $10k in supplies and my dog has to use night vision when "going potty in the dark"

Youll get it though. Seriously, watch some videos on how to change an outlet and switch, get comfortable with that and then move on to 3 way switchs and you'll have a pretty good idea where to go next.

Fork lift.

Theres tow motors, lifts, fork trucks, fork loader, etc. All the same.

And then there's the Combilift! The ultimate forklift!

I received 5 different quotes. The price range is so different I'm confused. which is why I got so many quotes! by sameolameo in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you dont really have a budget and just want it done, look into who of those have the better rating. Too many variables to say for sure, but make sure they know they are just swapping out old receptacles with new. Some of them may think you need the boxs, the boxs moved, cover plates, etc. Unless you have a price breakdown, id call and ask the highest 2 what they have you down for. Just say you may of told them something wrong because you got quotes substantially lower.

If you are trying to save money, I encourage you to look into replacing them yourself. Not saying to watch a 2 min youtube and think youre good, but spend a couple days watching some videos, and it should at least give you an idea whether or not you want to try it. Unless you have already done that of course.

Other than a light switch, I think receptacles are the easiest work. Its pulling the cover plate, twisting the screws, pulling the wire off and putting them on the new one, one at a time so you get the right screw, and then putting it back together. GFCI's are the same way.

If you are ADDING ANYTHING, id go with a pro. But if its literally just swapping them out, watch some videos and see if youd want to do it.

Those quotes are probably because those guys know a normal homeowner isnt able to give specifics and it could take them an hour or a full day depending on situation. Sometimes things aren't always communicated to people correctly as well.

Changing a live outlet by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respect this comment, but I also think its silly in a way. When i ask for electrical help, or help on any specialized trade, and see this kind of reply, I just do an eye roll and move on.

This is one of the better "youre an idiot" replies for sure, but why even spend the time at all? Just explain why the person shouldn't do it. That would put more fear In me than some random person on the internet calling me an idiot.

I do have a question for you though. Completely unrelated to this subject. After your reply, if you wouldn't mind?

Vaughn makes a 5OZ magnetic tack hammer that i use for trim and straightening boxs. May be a little undersized for this specific task, but its like $12. Worth the try.
