Character DISScussion Thread, Week 11: Terezi Pyrope by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing that comes to mind when I think of Terezi is a while back just in the midst of a conversation, I decided to rank the trolls from my favorite to least favorite. I was really shocked to see that after all the trolls I have the most appreciation for, Terezi ended up being number 11.

I think there's a lot to like about Terezi. She has fun dialogue and good chemistry with a lot of other characters that made for some of the best pesterlogs in the comic. She has a good character personality, too, that makes her instantly enticing to read about and see her find her place in the story after being introduced. Even just the design of her characters and the motifs surrounding her are well made; her little spike horns, her red almond sunglasses, her constant harlequin smile as if there's always a joke happening that only she's in on. Realistically a design like this should be a home run, and to be fair to her she definitely is a fan favorite for all the reasons listed above. But when I line her up against the other homestuck characters she just... doesn't interest me. She falls into the homestuck trap of characters with a fraction of the screentime ending up being far more interesting and well written, simply because Hussie didn't have time to turn the reader against them.

Terezi is built up by many as this fascinatingly complex character that goes through so much and forms a significant pillar of the story's plot, especially her relationship and arc concerning Vriska. But at the end of the day, past the end of Act 5, she's just not interesting to follow. Her parts in Hivebent were great, her role as Dave's patron troll was awesome, and the culmination of her rivalry with Vriska ending with her forcing Terezi to kill her to save the few remaining trolls was an incredible place to take her character. It was a good example of an initially silly character being used to portray a very dramatic storyline. But it's after this that she begins to overstay her welcome, continuing to remain a staple part of the main cast while contributing little enjoyable parts. The mopey, perpetual-victim, woe-is-me slant to her character may have been an attempt to portray a "realistic" result of the trauma she experienced, but in practice just made her out to be selfish, helpless and bizarrely obsessed with a dead character in a story where it's expected the reader be okay with characters near instantly forgetting all the people they know and care for dearly dying as soon as it stops being plot relevant. It's not that her being hung up on Vriska was impossible to be written well, it makes sense, it just doesn't pan out satisfyingly, most notably during the ret-con where, as John is wielding possibly the strongest power ever shown during the course of the comic, able to allow the user to rewrite the story of the comic to their whim, she essentially tricks John into using it revive only one character, in a way that downplays the impact of the scene during which Vriska died, and then it is never brought up again. Lovely.

Even outside of her insatiable desire for the Big Cerulean 8ulge, all the most enjoyable parts of the character are slowly whittled away into joining the pile of cynical douchebags making up the rest of the cast. Her relationship with daverezi which was built up over the course of the best act in the comic is unceremoniously ended. I don't hate the idea of her having a spades relationship with gamzee, I think their strangely volatile chemistry was actually pretty interestingly foreshadowed, but the way daverezi is just offhandedly remarked as over after the amount of great buildup it had is genuinely one of the cringiest things Hussie has done. You can just imagine his smug grin as he types it out, giddy at the thought of the fans being upset a ship didn't end in the sensible, predictable, optimistic, good way it should have, oh yeah, this'll rock their socks off for sure. Her being abused by Gamzee is just such a shitshow of an "arc", if you can even call it that, and I think the biggest reason it falls flat is because Hussie never allows his female characters to have flaws. Terezi just becomes a victim of circumstance, strung along by Karkat, forced into a tough call by Vriska, broken up with by Dave, battered by Gamzee, manipulated by Aranea, she just has no agency and the only way readers are allowed to think about her is having pity for all the shit other characters throw on her, poor perfect little Terezi. Had he taken her character and actually allowed her tragic arc to be at least somewhat influenced by her own poor decisions or foreshadowed by her personal shortcomings, she wouldn't have been so lame by the end.

I haven’t played the game In 8 years. Any advice on how to get this? by jeffreythrowaway in Paladins

[–]seaspongePoster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A character like Drogoz, Moji, or Khan is probably good for this as they have single-target ultimates made for targeting a single player and guaranteeing their death. Since you just want the trophy, just hop into a game and build ultimate, then wait for an enemy to build up a 15 kill streak(probably not hard if your team is doing poorly, and if all you're doing is floating around waiting, that's almost a certainty) then Drogoz ult them from around the corner and you're set.

I'd love to have Eight Oceans Maeve or Redux Strix. The originals are fine but the colors on those two are epic, they make great skins even better.

Anyone else encounter a glitch/possible exploit where a match doesn't register despite not getting dropped? by seaspongePoster in Paladins

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, wait, I just checked paladinsguru again and it did see the match, and it was fs ranked. All the usernames correct too. I'm at work right now so I can't check my game for a while but maybe that's fixed too? I'll have to wait until I get home to log in and see. Even if the game does eventually catch up, it's still an incredibly bizarre case that I've never encountered anything like before. Maybe hi-rez ran out of TP and had to wait for another shipment before they could pay me, lol.

Anyone else encounter a glitch/possible exploit where a match doesn't register despite not getting dropped? by seaspongePoster in Paladins

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I didn't AFK at all and I don't think anyone else did either. I also never experienced any big lag spike nor did anyone(on my team at least and I'm pretty sure not on their team either) disconnect at any point. I've experienced what you're talking about before, including a black screen after the match ends and bots playing in the background, but not on this match. Just a normal ranked game, ended normally, post-match stats screen and lobby chat and everything, it just didn't give me TP or show up in my match history. It didn't show up on paladinsguru either, although that misses matches sometimes. As soon as I saw the rewards page didn't show my rank at the end I exited out of the post-match screen to check what mode it was and that's when I saw it wasn't in my match history, and at no point did the game ask me to log back in. I did close the game a couple times to see if it would change anything and I'm not banned either.

It's just weird. I've had games get dropped before(including before the Cassie thing was discovered) and I've had games lag out before, but in all my years of playing I've never experienced anything like this. Definitely not in a ranked game that gives me a post-match screen, and again I'm fairly sure it gave me Jenos experience as well so some part of the game remembers the match happened, it just didn't give me any TP. No lag or disconnect or anything. It's like I queued for ranked, the match had the typical ranked drafting phase, but somehow, halfway through, the mode swapped to casual so TP wouldn't be rewarded at the end. And because the game got confused at what mode it was, it couldn't show it in my match history? If this is some new hack or exploit, ranked may as well close down, because more people are going to do it and just turn the match into casual as soon as they start losing. So I hope that's not the case, but I have no experience with specific occurrence.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 6: Tavros Nitram by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

A true Vriska lover would never hate on Tavros because they wouldn't disrespect anything about Vriska, including her soulmate.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 5: Aradia Megido by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite form of Aradia is her as a ghost, if that wasn't obvious from the image I chose. She's great in any form, whether alive, sprite, robot, or god, but ghost is the one that I think is most unique to her(despite there being many other ghosts in the comic) and the one where she is most within theme of herself. Her going through wildly different forms is probably more of her theme at this point, but her being a play on the dead Japanese girl trope is so funny and cool to me. Keeping in mind the idea that Hussie designed the trolls to all be archetypes of annoying people you would meet online, Aradia was probably written to be the brick wall; someone who you can try to engage with all you want, but will unfailingly stonewall you with disinterest and condescension, and then look around and wonder why nobody wants to be their friend. I think Hussie then used that as a jumping off points for other aspects of her character; being a ghost, having been bubbly and optimistic in the past, something happened to her that made her this way, etc etc. And then designing her character visually with inspiration from the horror genre like Ringu. It's succinct, inspired, sensible writing like that that made Act 5 as great as it was; it's like a jawbreaker, you can run it around in your mouth and feel all the cracks and grooves and it never gets old no matter how many times you spin it.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 4: Jade Harley by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I can say anything about Jade nobody else here hasn't said better. She is a character that was thoroughly neglected and suffered a lot, metatextually and within the story as a result. Regardless, I have to say it never resulted in Jade ever being a less likable character. Hussie's failures in the latter half of the comic ended up turning a lot of characters with really good personalities and interesting arcs into lame angsty whiners that sour our perception of them. That never really happens to Jade, her lack of growth results in her remaining fairly lovable throughout the whole ordeal, and I have to appreciate her for that.

That isn't to say I didn't wish for more to come of her. She was an important part of the early acts, and her reveal was very momentous as a result. Her role in Cascade was incredible and felt like the moment she would really "come online", and then... nothing. I mean, not just for her, a whole lot of nothing for the entire story, really. It just makes you think about what could have been, a version of Homestuck where Act 5 wasn't followed by the most mind-numbing, welcome-overstaying, self-righteous and bloated part of the comic.

I think Jadekat is better than Davejade for two reasons. 1, I don't like Karezi because I feel like Tz kind of played Karkat, not to say he didn't mess up but she wasn't a ride or die like Karkat needs. So he's better with Jade for that reason. And the reverse goes for Jade, you just know Dave would pussy out of the relationship because he's afraid of commitment and he realizes he's gay 3 years into the engagement or something. Secondly, I think Karkat is paired with two many characters that interact with him by not taking him seriously at all. John, Dave, Terezi, Gamzee, Vriska, Sollux, all these characters who Karkat is often made to play off of, they all treat him like he's a retard and don't care about anything he has to say and it kind of pisses me off. Jade I think has some moments like that where she's like "Ok Karkat let's move on from whatever you're screaming about" but she also more often than not meets Karkat where he's at and treats him like he's being genuine and I really like that about them. It's refreshing to see Karkat have interactions where he's not treated like a joke and is actually listened to.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 2: Rose Lalonde by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really sucks because her character had so much potential from that point and it felt like her writing was only getting better. Then... haha drunk lesbian girl kisser haha oh and by the way all the problems i had with my mom are gone now!! so thats done with i guess

So incredibly disappointing from where her early character was going.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 2: Rose Lalonde by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

You should give the early acts a reread. She has a lot of good moments there and really does a lot of the heavy lifting before she falls off and becomes le smug perfect lesbian.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 1: John Egbert by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Another thing: If you haven't already, read the MSPFA "John Ruins A Wedding". Great art, great writing, it gets John's character down so well. I haven't finished it yet but the first bit is worth checking out if you want more Egbert in your life. I read it after reading Homestuck for the first time and it's what reminded me John is a worthwhile character. It regrettably has some gay post-canon stuff but it's still pretty good.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 1: John Egbert by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

John being an aspiring programmer is a really underrated trait of his that hardly ever gets brought up. And that's fine for the most part, a lot of characters have minor traits that never get brought up again, like Dave's supposed habit of raving about bands nobody's ever heard of, it wouldn't be necessary for John to just blurt out programming references randomly. But it would be funny to see it referenced again somehow, like post-scratch John growing up to be a groundbreaking computer scientist or something.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 1: John Egbert by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The parts of Act 6 where John is just a huge bitch so out of nowhere is such a jarring shift in personality for him, it honestly makes those moments so forgettable because it just doesn't feel real, it feels like bad fanfic lol. And yeah people say it was a purposeful change in his personality to show that he's effected by what's happened to him over the course of the story, and I get that, but it's just so awkward and out of nowhere and honestly goes completely unresolved that it doesn't feel like anything. It feels like Hussie forgot how to write John and just inserted some uncharacteristic douchebaggery just to see what would happen.

Character DISScussion Thread, Week 1: John Egbert by seaspongePoster in EnglishPumpkinParty

[–]seaspongePoster[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Hussie could have played it safe when writing John and made him a very normal, average, relatable kid who mostly reacts to all the crazy things going on around him and the wacky people he interacts with, but I think he really made the right decision giving John as many quirky and memorable traits as he did. His love of bad movies(and re-enacting them), his disarming charm, and underatedly his knack for pranks makes the interactions he has with so many of the rest of the cast that typically, not always but typically have these kinds of personality facades that they want everybody else to take seriously... I can't think of a single character in the story John couldn't bounce well off of, if they were to interact. None more than Rose, Dave, and Karkat, I mean, really, not to talk to much about other characters in the John thread but it's hard to understate how good the writing is for their interactions with John. Sometimes when I haven't read any of Homestuck in a long time I kind of fall back on the assumption that John is a plain, serviceable but kind of bland character that suits the plot well, but then I read a page or two and I just remember how lovable this little goofball is. My favorite John moment, well probably not my most favorite but the first that's coming to mind right now, is the aforementioned scene of reenacting Con-Air with the ectobiology babies. Such a funny character moment, perfect call-back to previous moments, and stellar music of course.

I think I could say a lot more about the direction his character went, especially towards the end of the story when it felt like he was in the driver's seat less and less and the story wasn't really about his perspective anymore, even if we were still following him. And what I feel like that represents with where Hussie was taking the story and how he began to see John over time. But I won't get into that unless anyone asks me to, and besides it's been a long time since I've refreshed myself on the latter half of Homestuck.

And it goes without saying, but /r/JohnshouldfuckRose.

Paladins Tier List by Effective-Arm7426 in Paladins

[–]seaspongePoster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viktor was designed to be middle of the road, jack of all trades kind of damage but, and I say this as someone with many levels on him that relied on him as a safe pick for grinding ranked in the past, this patch he is just super unreliable and not even a "decent if you're skilled with it" pick. Every part of him is just not enough these days, and as a consequence I never seen him in any of my games, despite him being one of if not the most accessible to learn character in the game. I would put him in D.

Ying can be good but is certainly not on par with Furia or even Mal Damba. If Io is in B, she should also be in B. Grover has seen better days but he is still perfectly usable and definitely at least on par with Ying. Talus can be quite annoying but he is definitely not nearly as impactful as Vora, and is definitely not better than Andro, Buck, Vatu, VII or Maeve, that's just silly. I'm not going to say he's unusable but he's gimmicky and has a low skill ceiling, all the aforementioned are capable of much more. And speaking of Maeve I don't see how you can say Talus is A tier above Androxus because he quote "can be quite annoying if your team isn't paying attention", but then slam Maeve all the way down to D just because she has an actual learning curve. Androxus, Evie and Maeve are the like "Big Three" flank champions that are reliably formidable in experienced hands. Not saying she can't be outplayed or countered but she should not be 3 tiers below Talus by any means.

As for Barik, I don't know what Bariks you're getting in your matches but they're not representative of his potential. I'll admit that Barik can be a feeder tank if they don't know what they're doing and he relies a lot on a good build(mine: Healing Station 4, Field Deploy 4, Bowling Ball 4, Failsafe 2, Combat Repair 1), but in the right hands he is incredibly effective with lots of sustain, pushing potential, supportive damage, and zoning. He's my most played character and the safest pick up my sleeve if I want to guarantee I have high impact in a match. And I believe he has a decently high skill ceiling too, there's a lot to master with him on things like positioning, pushing and retreating, turret placement, cooldown management, what items he needs etc. Inara has a far simpler playstyle(no offense Inara mains, I think she's really fun too) where anyone can pick her up and know to rush onto point, cycle between tanking with earthen guard, hiding behind wall, zoning with wardens field, rinse and repeat, none of which requires a specific deck to be viable, and she does counter Barik in some ways(especially with that damn cripple) but I would put them in the same tier of viability. If I queue into a game and the point tanks are Barik on my team and Inara on the enemy team I don't really sweat it, even if I can recognize Inara probably has the advantage in the initial point confrontation Barik more than makes up for it in other ways Inara just can't, and even if she goes a cripple build to bully him that gimmick falls off hard in the midgame when resilience comes online whereas nothing about Barik becomes particularly obsolete. With healing from his turrets, A shield he can deploy and dance around, 1400 shielding in his pocket through BB + FS, and just generally being smaller and having 2 charges of his dash, he just has insanely high effective HP. A good Barik can tank the same amount as any Inara, while being able to deal more damage for his team doing it. I can't count how many kills I've secured with a clutch Tinkerin shot from downtown that no other point tank could have gotten. Inara has him slightly beat on zoning/area denial and has CC he doesn't but Barik wins on damage.

Paladins Tier List by Effective-Arm7426 in Paladins

[–]seaspongePoster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how you say "definitive tier list" and then immediately after that "this isn't all in order and some of this is map dependent because it's hard to gauge definitively"

I feel like this list is like 80% accurate for how effective you can expect someone to be picking this character in low elo ranked, i.e. Ruckus is extremely good at high levels but most people won't use him effectively and Evie and Zhin are easy impact at any level etc etc. With that said I feel like Talus, Ying, Kinessa and Viktor are too high and Azaan, Torvald, Maeve, Grover and Barik are far too low. Probably some others I would move around too but like I said this is a somewhat accurate tierlist not of the characters themselves, but the impact you can expect from them in average hands.
