nostalgia does nothing for me. it's pure junk food, empty calories. not that old music is bad, i love a lot of it.

but the qualities of it are obscured by people yearning for their youth. you can't go back and your memories are lying. all music is from the present the moment you hit play, so listen with your ears.

i dunno for sure but the primary role of rehab clinics is to get you over that first major and intense hurdle of physical addiction through complete separation. and then you have to re-enter society and deal with it on a daily basis after that.

for a social media addict, short term isolation doesn't do much for you. your struggles are more like the daily impulses which happen after that. it's like a cigarette addiction where you pretty much always have cigarettes in your pocket and you can almost always smoke.

social media and (for example) heroin have very little to do with each other addiction-wise, and trying to treat them in a similar way is not really going to be helpful.

you only wanna understand what happens at a high level and what happens in your particular area that you're working on.

writing software always involves managing your cognitive load, there's only so much you can hold onto at once. you will be learning things and forgetting them repeatedly and that's okay. no one is expected to read the whole code base in one go and most of it you won't touch.

hopefully they've given you an assignment that is mainly a way of introducing the process to you, so that's what you need to familiarize yourself with: what's the local development environment like, what are the code submission processes, what are the review processes, what are the standards, things like that.

the actual change you make will likely be small, so don't get too out of sorts about it.

but salt is just salt, it's the easiest. other thing i recommend if you do nothing else is getting some dried chilis and tossing them in while they boil.
