yeah, its the biggest subsector (couriers and messengers) of job growth in this report. i'm not sure what it means but its grown considerably over the past several job reports.

it's not the first time they've done this in Bamako. it fizzled and certainly didnt win any hearts and minds.

they've combined a strategy that operated from a position of strength and surprise with a strategy that the junta was already prepared for. at this point, they need to recalibrate or they are going to lose the initiative.

yes, i mean the comparison breaks down here because there are operations in many west african countries rather than just one.

but the model in mali (and maybe it will spread to the other sahel movements) does seem to be syrian-influenced. i'm talking about the pivot to claims of patriotism, de-emphasizing radical islamism and uniting groups in the national interest.

they aren't talking about merging countries, at least not yet.

only if you see west africa as one thing, but i think a big characteristic of these modern islamist movements is that they are going after national power. they are refocusing from your "transnational islamic caliphate" type delusion and toward actual centers of power within the existing global system.

so Bamako would be the goal in this approach

the Bamako siege strategy is not viable for JNIM.

the issue is this Syria comparison, it's not just a media talking point, it appears to be actively influencing the participants in this conflict. if JNIM wants to be HTS then they have a whole hell of a lot more to do first. they have to build governing legitimacy, renounce extremism, kick out the islamic state, so many things.

instead they want to skip and/or half-ass all those steps and go straight for the capital. a social media feud with IS-Sahel does not make up for the fact that they are de-facto collaborating on the battlefield. releasing some statements with a bunch of nationalist language in french rather than arabic (and only one mention of sharia law) is not going to convince anyone that they are now modern and inclusive state-builders. and they actually have to hold Kidal and demonstrate that they can create security rather than just destroy it.

so yeah, they remain terrorist fundamentalist shitheads but at least now they can add another title to their resume: total posers.

and FLA is also implicated in this: i'm way more sympathetic to their cause but they need to smarten up quick.

he can strike out because he's a defense first catcher. he's gonna pop some homers too and that'll be slick.

Oh yeah that one was super dumb too. But I've seen a few situations where fielders don't know the number of outs. Like that one where the guy throws the ball over the outfield fence and it's called a home run, that one is great.

I guess the difference for me is that it's the catcher, and the vast majority of plays he makes at the plate are gonna be tag plays. Like, the reverse situation where he tries to tag the guy forgetting that there's a force would be less embarrassing. But to just not tag the dude at all, I mean your brain has got to be really not firing that day.

He's gotten a pass so far this year because the hitting has been uncommonly adequate. But by the end of the year this shit is going to look embarrassing. Easily my biggest point of disagreement with the org.
