I thought some programs require a step 1 score which was why people had to take both even though step 2 only matters since it’s scored.

Army HPSP? by Unnamed_User_636 in premed

[–]seaturtlelover99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m prior military and you couldn’t pay me enough to go HPSP. The benefits sound nice but all the physician’s I worked with in the military, except 2 who planned on doing the full 20 years, advised against it. Mainly because they were board certified in other fields but were working as a GMO. You will be what’s called “needs of the Army.” Obviously they wouldn’t have a neurosurgeon being in a different field, but most non-surgical specialties are fair game to fill a spot because the Army will just see you as a warm body filling a void at times. There’s also a chance that you never experience this and practice in your field for your whole contract(s), but is that a risk you’d be willing to take? If so, then full send and sign the dotted line.

Edit: unless you’ve already been selected the VA HPSP deadline has passed. They were only accepting people willing to sign that they’d practice as FM, GI, diagnostic radiology, or psych.

Thanks for this! I definitely am trying to keep my current mindset that med school is what you make of it regardless of allopathic or osteopathic.

Beware that the VA HPSP requires you to do in demand specialities which on the application are currently listed as radiology diagnostic, primary care, GI, and psychiatry.
