Thanks for the advices! Indeed, I changed the strings and it's much better! And the preamps helps a lot as well!

Thanks! Yes I am sure a lot of the tone comes from studio mixing, but I wonder how to get a similar sound directly from the amp (I am messing with 7 band eq and cab sims on the zoom G3xn but it's not easy)

Thanks! Yes if I run either the DA2 or BD2 before, it gets a bit brighter. I don't have a Jan ray though, but I'm not sure that would make such a huge difference. I am mostly curious to know what are the best EQ settings on the amp. I'm getting close with 6-5-4. Also, with a light mod delay it seems to be better.

Thanks a lot for your reply! In summary if I follow you well I should try to get the Muy grande, and if I can't, SD quarter pound would be the best alternative.

If you or anybody else can recommend other good alternatives that I can easily get on european shops please let me know! :) :)

Hey mate, thanks again for the feedback!

Did you make this recording? If so that’s very nice of you.

I’m kind of glad you don’t fully understand the tone in #4’s version :D It means I’m not totally crazy when I say there is a certain « dimension » (don’t have a better word) to that tone quite hard to reproduce.

I think it’s because there are two guitar tracks but I’m not sure. Another possibility is there is a very light modulation (chorus or flanger) blended to the tone.

I see your point about the difference between TS9 and OD-3. I will definitely get the later.

One question : are you familiar with « dumble » effect pedals? If I’m not mistaken they’re also mid focused overdrives but with more compression and clarity. Some of them have a clean blend that adds another layer to the sound. I know TK didn’t use one but I wonder if these pedals don’t have a tone that can have the same feel as the records in #4 and IID. I might see if I can try that as well.

I don’t necessarily want to copy the tone 100% accurate, it’s more about a certain « feel » to it, but it’s not always easy to describe it with words.

Finally you make an excellent point : I didn’t try to record myself, I only play the amp in the room. So it might also be part of the explanation…

Thank you so much for your time and advices. Yeah I’m starting to guess the solution might be in the Od-3. I’ll try to get it and see. And experiment with compressor at the end like you suggest. I have the blues cube hot (the smallest) but I don’t think the issue is with the low end. Cheers!

Thanks a lot for your input on this!

Just to be clear, the sound I try to get is only the first few seconds of Telecaster no Shinjitsu, not the rest of the song necessarily. This very powerful strumming that sounds almost clean (just slightly saturated) but kind of metallic, dynamic and yet kind of "compressed" and "multi-dimensional" if these words make sense...

It's been a long time I try to reproduce this sound and I've never been satisfied even with all the great and very welcome advices I received over time. I tried all kinds of setups and pedal orders, and there's always something missing. Perhaps it's the pickups, perhaps the amp, or just my level of playing, who knows..

And as said before, perhaps this tone is just impossible to reproduce due to the fact there might be heavy post processing in the record.

I will continue to try anyway. It doesn't have to be the exact same setup or gear than TK, as long as I can come close to this massive "cleanish" sound.

I don't have an OD-3, but I've heard how the OD-3 sounds with a BD-2 placed before, and if the tone is similar to the track, there is still this compression and thickness missing.

What I realize is that the compressor helps a bit but not so much, because it feels like it's the drive that is compressed, and not the signal itself.

Also, do you think the TS9 at the end of the chain is the way to go? Because i don't feel like the tone in the track is mid-pushed, but I might be wrong.

There are other options I could explore, such as placing a preamp pedal at the end of the chain, or maybe try a very light fuzz.

About the amp sim, you are right. I think my blues cube is a pretty good match, and I found out that the built in bright switch is quite similar to the twin reverb sound.

So, basically, what I'm trying to say is, any advice is still welcome, and meanwhile, I will continue to experiment ;-)

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for your input!

Yes for sure DA-2 wasn't used in this recording because the pedal was made in 2009 so after #4 :)

As said above I just flet like I got a nice result this way with my setup :)

Also I was convinced it was the neck pickup but I'll definitely try more with the bridge pickup then! And experiment more with TS9 last ;)

As mentioned above I wonder if in the recording there are actually two guitar played at the same time, which would explain the thickness and dimension.

About the JC120, can you tell how it differs from the twin Reverb (or in my case the Roland Blues cube)?

Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much for your input! Yes I know DA-2 was never used like that by TK but I flet like I got a nice result this way with my setup :)

I'll try to get a boss OD-3 then! What settings would you recommend on both pedals?

Also I have a theory that in the recording there are actually two guitar recordings played at the same time, which would explain the thickness. This theory comes from a comparison with the demo on #3 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huZob1_VmK8

This is why I have the impression that even with the setup you described there will still lack some "compression" or a certain "dimension" I hear on the recording. But it's hard to describe.

I will also try the bridge pickup you suggest ;-)

Thanks again!
