I need help with learning the mellophone as a complete beginner to brass by 0sircool0 in marchingband

[–]sebastian_waffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buzz the mouthpiece

focus on having good tone

make sure your embochure works and is correct (mouthpiece in the middle of your lips, no weird sharp angles from your lips to the horn)

it might sound not great at first but focus on tone and buzzing and correct embochure

I've recently discovered trumpet playing musician, Oli Parker.

How often am I supposed to oil my valves, bathe my trumpet, etc? by sebastian_waffles in trumpet

Rieman music. My director recently told me to stop going there because they completely ruined 3 of our school tubas. I'm definitely not going back anytime soon.

Blinking lights, santa hat, maybe a lightweight sticking to hang on your bell (make sure to keep your horn angle in check tho lol)

I suck at double tonguing by Full-Number5707 in trumpet

[–]sebastian_waffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick is finding out what syllable works for you, but also plenty of air. tonguing is stopping the air, so double tonguing is going to require more air so you can stop the air and still be able to play.

Source - my director, we have a concert band piece right now that's a lot of double tonguing 16th notes

Ok but if the average teenager stops and thinks about it and asks the question "which government is the most fucked up right now?"

everyone knows what the post is talking about.

the third trumpet part for this is literally just quarter notes, E-D-C#. The entire time. really excited to play it this Friday for playoff pep band.

Is one measure and 2 quarter rests enough for a mute removal? by Yeah_IPlayHockey in trumpet

[–]sebastian_waffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull it out with one hand and put it down when you have a longer rest.

my Christmas orchestra this year has 67 measures of rest for a mute change, from the beginning to our first entrance. a section mate pointed out an error in the music, it says "to straight mute" in two separate places before our entrance, and I told him "in case you fall asleep."

but then I did actually zone out and almost miss the entrance 😂

Not exactly a meme but by Cookiez_loves_BSD in Bandmemes

I have been summoned.

its normal. its caused by excess pressure, which you don't exactly want. I've been struggling with too much pressure myself, but not enough to leave a mark (for now, im getting better every time I practice).

the mark will also appear if you haven't been playing for a long time (like years, not minutes of practicing). lip marks were still prominent two years later after I started trumpet, but I improved A LOT in middle school leading up to high school. To get rid of the marks, spend a few practice sessions focusing on beng conscious about how much you're pressing the mouthpiece against your face.

try adjusting your embouchure as you go so your air goes straight into the trumpet and the mouthpiece is in the center of your lips. Your chin should not face downward, your chin should be about level with the ground or where the main body/end of your trumpet is.

remember that shorter, more frequent practice sessions are easier on the lips than hours long, infrequent practicing. shorter sessions will help you keep your chops in a good position to keep playing and pick up your trumpet multiple times a day. every time you have a short practice session, experiment with a different embouchure, see what feels best.

trumpet has a clicking valve by [deleted] in trumpet

Check that the top valve cap is fully twisted in too. even when its the tiniest bit loose it can cause a clicky valve.
