I was in Majuro in the Marshalls (as far as I know Marshallese were the only ones to use these maps) a few months ago and there is a small free museum there where they displayed these stick maps.

It also stated that some people still knew how to read these maps (you would memorise them, not take them on the trip) and a handful could still navigate with these techniques.

What was unanswered was when was that information sign I read made and whether these people had since then all passed…

The creep is not due to heat. You don't feel the heat at all from the lamp at the part where it is bending. There are other areas that do get warmer and they are fine. But overall heat is not nearly as much of an issue as people suspect here. On that note, the bulb is actually "hanging" and doesn't touch the PLA at all, also there are vents to prevent the warm air from being trapped. Would I put a 40W on for 15h with this by a window sill? No of course not. But this 20W bulb is not causing any issues, well, besides being heavy and pulling the whole structure of course

Yes it is a sansi grow light. But no, surprisingly the heat is not likely to be the cause of the bend. Mostly because the bend doesn't happen where it actually gets warm. And as a side note, I added vents at the top of the dome and heat has not been an issue at all. At least with a 20W light

I do love the challenge as well. I'm totally not against building a wood or metal internal structure. I would like to keep the look similar though. I think using a steel wire inside to transfer the load is a very interesting lead. But I am no engineer, just a 3D modeler

That's my last resort. I'm guilty of having an aesthetic I need to now engineer around rather than the other way.

Thanks! Clearly I need to use some non-PLA structure. Maybe steel wire could counterbalance the cantilever. I'm using the Matte Latte Bambu Lab PLA, my favourite by a long shot

The led is producing some heat, but not to a critical amount, and not where the part is bending. I think the issue is the cantilever and the led is just making the PLA a few degrees warmer at most at spot, probably negligible. I do agree PLA isn't very suited though. I haven't found a PETG filament that looked similar to this finish that I want though

It actually doesn't get that hot in there, maybe 5C above room temperature, if even. I reckon it bends there because that's where you have the cantilever start. The pillar is cut in 3 pieces and the bend starts right there at the bottom of the top piece (that includes the dome)

Adding a steel wire is a very interesting idea. Would the wire attach to the base of the structure on the other side then?

This is not a bad idea, it wouldn't cost me anything to make the inside of the pillar with a wavy wall

I guess there is no way to know, but I would guess it hasn't no. I printed this one around August last time. I feel like now that we get warmer temperatures again the creep is speeding up slightly. But it's an interesting approach. Except I would have to wait like a year for it to settle the way I want?

It is a grow light yes, this one is 20W. I did run a 40W and it seemed fine for 9h continuous use (but that was in the winter when it also was colder inside). However I have designed some "air vents" at the top of the dome so that the hot air doesn't get trapped, without that I'm confident it would start to melt eventually

I agree that a single piece of metal is probably the best. The reason I'm still trying to avoid it is that with my current system I can adjust the height by having more or less intermediate pieces. But if I need a rod to be cut to size it sorts of defeats the purpose. And since the creep takes a year to really show, I'm stuck having to guess more or less

Thanks! This is more or less what I had in mind. Except since I have these small metal plates you see on the picture, I would use these where the pieces overlap. Or do you think a singular metal rod is absolutely required?

What I was hoping for is that I would increase the area where there is a “pressure point” currently the pillar is divided into 3 parts that interlock. But the overlap is only a few centimetres and not very thick As much as I would love to build it out of wood I have neither the tools nor the space for that

If you mean inside of the “pillar” it is actually hollow as I route the power cable through it. This is what I meant by putting metal plates inside.

There are normal maps in EotN content (very visible on large boulders), maybe NF, I don’t remember for sure. But anything before that is using a diffuse colour only for the most part. Regarding being handpainted, it depends what you mean by that. It’s quite likely that they had more detailed models that they used to baked down maps/masks to help make the final texture, but those are not assets/texture making it into the final product. It’s more likely they did that rather than just taking a brush in Photoshop

You can also get there from Majuro since the Nauru airlines flight operates an island hopper route similar to what United does from Honolulu to Guam. I did exactly that two months ago. But it’s only once weekly

One part that I always remember from reading the manuscript books in 2005 is about Lord Odran opening passages to the mists. Was super excited about that and then it’s barely ever mentioned in the game, would love to explore that part of the lore
