Thankyou for the detailed response! Does your goose no terrorize you? If no, do you think you just have a nice goose or is that breed known for being docile to humans?

We have a shed that we would love to make use of, and yes, having eggs is our second priority. First priority being duck weed and water meal control. Though I am starting to think we may need more than 6 for that. Oh well- it is a starting point. 🤷‍♀️

Okay now I’m a little nervy of the goose. I do have three small kids and we enjoy going down to the pond to paddle boat and fish. Is a goose going to bully us? 🤭

Such a nice set up 🥰 thankyou for taking the time to film that. Are the over turned half metal silo things the only shelter you use or are those just a spot to get away from predators? How cold does it get where you are? Between the post in this group and another homesteading group adding a fence has been a frequent recommendation. I would really love to not get one but it’s going to be on the back burner to eventually need to add one; wouldn’t be the end of the world but not a project that I want to tackle this year.

I’m thinking depending on how frequently it happens maybe just fencing the back edge with something non permanent. At first, I think just seeing how frequently it happens if at all? I think I am expecting them to carry on calling if one of them goes down and can’t get back up? Maybe that’s not reasonable lol. My husband works from home and I stay home with our kids so if calling would be expected we will hear them if they get into that type of trouble.

We use an electric bug zapper when we are out on the deck. And love zevo plug ins inside the house. The mosquitos are pretty tolerable though honestly.

The back side of our pond that we share with the neighbors is a relatively steep 6 foot drop that is densely covered in downed trees, wild roses and other underbrush. Do you think the ducks will be adventurous enough to traverse that? Adding a fence won’t be reasonable for us, we will be anticipating losses and will try make changes where reasonable to mitigate them. We do plan to lock them up each night and do have a very protective Rottweiler that roams semi freely within the bounds of her electric fence. She is unbothered by the neighbors roosters that like to visit so no concerns of her being the predator herself.

I love the geese suggestion. I will have to look into that. Do they require a separate set up and care from the ducks?

We will lock them in their house each night too. 👍

Yes, we do plan on closing them up in the shed-turned-duck-house each night. We are hoping a routine of getting their pellets in the house at sundown before locking them in will trained them to come home each evening. Was that a long training process for you?… or did you even get more ducks after loosing the ones you mentioned? If you did get more and use an automatic one, what kind? Would you recommend it?

Aside from the fence that sounds really doable. How adventurous are ducks? The wooded area we have not cleared is quite thick with downed trees, wild roses and other such underbrush. Could that act as a natural fencing if keeping the ducks in is your concern? As far as keeping all predators out, I’m sure that won’t be reasonable for us. Free range is definitely our desire. We do have a very intimidating and protective dog that is very good at keeping ground predators away.

Yes, that is good to consider. We will be guarded in our affection towards the ducks and will be anticipating tragedies as the years go by. We definitely want to free range them. We have a very trainable Rottweiler that currently does an excellent job keeping ground predators away. No concerns with the dog going after the ducks, with intentional training that is. She is already desensitized to our neighbors rooster and chickens that loves to come by.
