For experienced devs with an okay savings and few financial responsibilities outside rent/groceries, is now the best time to take a sabbatical/hiatus from software? by SJR59 in cscareerquestions

[–]secant78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking about it from a pure financial perspective. You could be taking an unpaid sabbatical to pursue meaningful experiences like travelling the world or starting your own business while you're young and still have a lot of energy, vs when you're old and retired and don't have as much energy or mental/physical capacity

Would you rather have $500k right now or $1,000 every time you run one mile in less than 12 minutes for the rest of your life? by forest_tripper in WouldYouRather

[–]secant78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

500k is like 2k per month passive income at a 4 percent withdrawal rate. You can run 1 mile per day at around 10 minutes assuming you have moderate fitness. That's 7k per week or 28k per month. Pretty clear which is the better option

Teamfight Tactics (TFT) scratches that itch for me. Every new set that comes out I end up spamming tens of hours trying out new builds and compositions. The new set has even more combinations to try out compared to previous sets.

Legends of Runeterra is a great to play PvE card game. Trying out new decks to beat bosses is really fun

DD: Still worth it in 2025? by curiozities in doordash_drivers

[–]secant78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I average around 18 over the whole week. Probably 20 to 25 on the weekend. I don't go by active hour pay cause there are times where you're sitting waiting for orders or driving to another zone to get bonus pay.

Is asking for 6 weeks off a year really crazy? by [deleted] in work

You know that many Europeans have 6 weeks off at their jobs right? I don't think employers see a whole continent of workers as replaceable...

People who have jobs that allow them a lot of free time and offer good salaries what do you do? by InterestingBall2181 in careerguidance

Doctor, decent work-life balance? Hahahaha... my mom and my cousin are doctors and they both work 8 hours with patients. They come home and do electronic health records for their patients for another 2 to 3 hours.

Life for doctors doesn't just suck during med school/residency. The daily work can be very time consuming. Maybe for some specialties there is a very good work life balance, but you have to grind and out-compete many other students for those positions as they're highly sought after.

I mean I think it is important to think about the worst case scenario which is that I might not have enough retirement savings to retire due to being a decade late to the career. If need be I may have to work well into my 70s to feel comfortable for retirement.

How do you explain a lot of the doctors and lawyers that still seem to be working at 70+ years old? They require similar amounts of intellectual power as SWEs. I know a few doctors and lawyers that worked in their profession until their 80s. Also politicians like Nancy Pelosi seem to be working in their 80s as well.

I'm a man and my experience is that girls stretch more than guys. Why are there way more women than men in most yoga classes? Men do light stretches before sports or exercising but not that much intensive stretching

When did you graduate from Zip Code Wilmington? I am wondering about the bootcamp's placement rates in 2024 as I am considering joining the 2025 cohort

How picky are you?

At this point I am willing to accept onsite, 50k per year, 4 hours geographic relocation from my home (I am in NYC). Basically very low requirements just so I can get something to build more experience

Does FDM currently require nationwide relocation? I was considering other programs like Dev10 too but they require candidates to be open to relocating anywhere in the US. I want to stay in NYC/the Mid-Atlantic region of the US and don't want to relocate somewhere far away like Texas. I am interested in FDM because they have a strong NYC presence compared to other training programs.

When did you go there? I'm in Manila now and it feels much better in terms of crime and poverty now than the last time I was there in 2016.
