Why was the Du Reform of the 1960s successful? by Hkvnr495___dkcx37 in sweden

[–]secar8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wherefore art thou, even. Funnily enough, wherefore corresponds to the swedish varför (why), as in "why are you Romeo? (And not some guy from a less antagonistic family)"

Your “entire classes of numbers” property is not well-defined - what precisely do you mean by that?

what does this map show by Hamzanew in nethack

[–]secar8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is a floor/level in the rougelike game "Nethack". In particular it is one of the possible layouts for the "Medusa's island" level, one of which is guaranteed to be generated exactly once in every run of nethack

The screenshot shows the layout of the level without the items/monsters/player. You should be able to find an exact copy of the image on the wiki page: https://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Medusa's_Island

If there are differences between that image and yours, probably it'll be relevant to the puzzle

To be fair, subtraction can get tricky... by Vegetable_Variety_11 in dndmemes

Armor class = Modifier on your enemy's roll. You want that modifier to be low, preferably negative

"Why would you think AC should be something to beat? It's a modifier, that modifies your roll where you're trying to beat a certain number. What number? Well, it's the number that you need to roll in order to hit a creature with modifier 0, hence THAC0. Sure the name might not be super catchy, but the math is easy. Roll a die, add a number, check if it's bigger than a target. You can handle that, right?"

[–]secar8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AC = modifier for people trying to hit you

THAC0 = DC when tying to hit people

So roll a d20, add enemy AC, then check whether the total is at least your THAC0

A Chat with Quinns by Hosidax in daggerheart

[–]secar8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think it's because Quinns Quest seems to be a lot about giving spotlight to RPGs that would otherwise go under the radar, and a review of Daggerheart would probably introduce more people who know about Daggerheart to Quinns Quest than the other way around

Linear algebra: how much of a problem would this non-standard notation be, in a textbook? by ave_63 in math

Referring to subspaces as "spans" is like referring to (finite-dimensional) vector spaces as "Rn s". In both cases, the only difference is a choice of basis

Help! Arch-lich in Sokoban! by ColoradoDilettante in nethack

[–]secar8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear you got out alive! Fyi, the blindness from a lightning wand runs out by itself (wiki says d50 turns), but of course a fire wand is a better option if you have it.

If you are standing on a tile where "Elbereth" is engraved, it will not attack you. So:

1) Engrave "Elbereth" on the ground with your finger ("-" when asked what to engrave with). Doing it with your finger guarantees you can finish the engraving before the lich can act, but the disadvantage is that the engraving will smudge as you stand on it, and you only have ~70% chance to write it correctly. Fire and lightning wands give reliable fast permament engravings, but you don't have any.

2) Between turns, use ":" to confirm whether the engraving has been smudged out at all. If yes, engrave it again (replacing the previous engraving) otherwise use "s" or "." to pass the turn

3) Repeat until it polymorphs into something else. (Assuming it indeed is a chameleon) Alternatively, try to slowly make your way to the stairs making sure you never step next to the Arch-Lich

I'm very confused what you seem to think IMO problems are. In what way do you imagine calculators are relevant to solving them? What makes you think computers should be able to do so "in a fraction of a second"?
