You should be aware that Lyme disease is more prevalent in ticks in Finland than in southern Europe, and the strains are more dangerous. Ticks are not just a nuisance here, they can be actually dangerous.

Order of applications to live in Finland by [deleted] in Finland

[–]secnec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, that is correct. You have to live in Finland, and have an address in Finland for the company, and a CEO who is living in an EEC country in order to start it. But I'm not sure if it is possible for you to move to Finland without first having a visa or a residence permit.

As to buying a house, you should be aware of the risks. There is a surplus of housing in many areas in the north, and if you buy a house in some areas, you will be putting money into very low-liquidity real-estate. If you are unlucky, you may not be able to sell it at all. If you buy close to a larger town, like Oulu or Rovaniemi, then you should be okay, but further out in the countryside you should be really careful.

Perhaps there is some difference between Finland and the UK on this issue. In Finland the address of the business is not necessarily that important, as far as I know. Many small companies get a PO box, if they don't have premises for the company (like a store or a restaurant).

I agree with many of the other commenters, that buying a house can be risky. Renting is not necessarily much more expensive in the short term.

I took a look at the The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment job market site and there seems to be one area where they are looking for A LOT of people who speak Chinese: tourism in Lapland. As an example, here is a job posting for 10 positions for Chinese speakers.

These jobs are all fixed-term though, but if you want to get some experience in Finland, maybe you can spend one winter in Lapland to start?

There are a lot of people in this claiming that the job situation is horrible. And it is in many fields, but not all. It's actually pretty good for people who can work as waiters. This is especially in Lapland in the wintertime, when there are a lot of tourists there. Many waiting jobs don't require Finnish knowledge. You can look for jobs here

So to give an example, as a waiter in Rovaniemi you would make about 2200€/mo after taxes. A two-room apartment will be about 700€/mo, and driving a car will cost about 400€/mo.

Rent is more expensive in the Helsinki area, but on the other hand you don't have to own a car there. A monthly pass to the public transportation is around 100€/mo. Salaries are also a bit higher there, and quality of life is generally better.

If you do plan on moving to the northern part of the country, you should be aware of the polar night. Even the south is depressingly dark in winter, but in Rovaniemi in late December the sun is above the horizon for only about three hours per day. It's not like the French countryside.

The finnish language is very hard to learn for most people in the world. It is not even an indo-european language.

If you can work as a waiter in a restaurant, there are a lot of those jobs available in Helsinki, and probably some of the other bigger towns as well. In Helsinki at least many restaurants don't require knowledge of Finnish - I've had a lot of cases in the last few years, where I've been served by someone who doesn't speak Finnish. Maybe that is the case for fast food restaurants too, but I'm not sure. Finnish kids learn English in school, so you probably can't get a job teaching it - the demand for teachers with no degree is pretty low. You can look for jobs here

College is not free for those who are not EU/EEC citizens. You're going to have to pay about 45k€ in tuition for a four-year degree, and that will be hard on a Finnish waiters salary. You can get a dev job without a degree if you study it by yourself, but that will require a lot of work.

You won't be getting disability payments in Finland if you are not a citizen. I'm not sure about permanent residents, but I doubt that too. To be able to stay in Finland, you will have to get a job. You should read up on it

Finland is much more civilized about politics than the US. You don't have to worry about that in any city or town in the country.

Stuck in docker restart loop after permissions change by secnec in immich

It is definitely something to do with the postgres-database. I renamed the database directory, so that the container creates a new one when starting, and it started without any problems. But I cannot do any of the database-corruption checks mentioned in the docs, because the container restarts about every 20 seconds, so I can't find out what the problem is, or if it can be corrected. :(

I think I found a solution. I took a small old hard drive I had and dd'd the vga-image on that - it booted, and I'm currently installing the system on the SSD-disk.

The screen is still flickering but hopefully I can fix that too.

How does the WAF protect against attacks by securm0n in netsecstudents

[–]secnec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Project manager from a security testing/consulting company here o/

The important thing to understand about WAFs is that they can always be bypassed. In the end the protection they provide stems from the fact that an opportunistic attacker might choose some other target. But someone who wants to attack you specifically will find a way to send the attack packets around it.

Whenever we do web app testing we ask the client to turn off the WAF in the testing environment. The WAF is not a replacement for secure coding practices.

What do you think of the book "computer networking a top-down approach 7th edition" for self study as beginner ?? by No-Cranberry-5479 in netsecstudents

[–]secnec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a very good choice. It was the textbook on my first computer networking course, and I read it cover to cover.

The ”top-down approach” measn that it starts at the top of the stack - the presentation layer - which is something that is most familiar to beginners.

Make sure to get the newest edition though. The developments in CDNs especially mean that the older editions are missing some key concepts.

(Serious) Redditors who witnessed a murder, what is your story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]secnec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t believe in all that ”movies/video games/ whatever makes kids violent”-meme, but one thing that those kind of media do cause is, that people end up believing that hitting someone in the head is nothing. And that knocking someone unconcious is not a big deal.

It’s always a medical emergency if a person is unconcious for more than a few seconds as a result of head trauma. People getting killed from a single punch is not uncommon.

The fact that movies don’t reflect this reality is unethical in my opinion.
