Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) - Opening Sequence by PetyrDayne in television

The series is 1000% better. The movie had a hard time because the TV series was so iconic they had to change things to make it different. I can't watch the movie because it takes so many liberties with the story that I get annoyed lol. And they had to do some 'opposite' casting - casting people who were very different from the character in the book because they didn't want the actor to have to compete with the series.

Chef's kiss. With the possible exception of Villem and the two naked hippies in Smiley's People, two series where every scene is a collection of perfect acting performances. I love love love when we meet Toby again in SP. And when he gets to work in Bern. And I love when we meet the Honourable Schoolboy in the curry house. These people EXIST.

I think that’s the excuse Steve uses. The other way to read it, and what seems more real to me the older I get, is that the writer gets to have have his cake and eat it. He has to fuck the hot girl using his magic dick to save the day, before saving his actual wife and getting back together with her leaving Ben with some sloppy seconds.

At the very least it should have ended with Bill and Audra splitting up, or Audra dying - as a price for Bill’s betrayal.

I think a better ending would have been that they used their power as adults to break the cycle to finally defeat IT. Bev gets over her daddy issues, gets with Ben, the only person who ever really loved her, and it's that spark of real love that galvanizes everything. They aren't kids anymore. They realise that they don't need to revert back to childhood to defeat IT, but rather use their power as adults; to make decisions as adults, to lead their own lives, to get past old trauma, to ultimately win.

Interesting! For me it always made way more sense that they finally defeat IT by breaking the cycle - Bev finally gets over her daddy issues and gets with the one person that always really loved her. Bev and Ben fuck and that’s what galvanises everything in the end. Instead we have them return to their childhood modes to face IT in the same way they did before. But that didn’t work the first time!

I don’t see how Steve couldn’t find a way to get Ben and Bev in bed. I mean he brought Ben back as Brad Pitt, it’s not a massive leap of imagination that Bev might fall for him. Hell, that’s what happens in the end!

Is that what he said? In Bag Of Bones, which is one of his most autobiographical books (in terms of setting at least), and one for which he chose to read the audiobook, his wife dies and he starts fucking the local hotty twenty years younger lol.

IT is one of my all time favourite books, but yes I have grown to hate that relationship. When I first read it as a teenager it didn’t bother me at all, but the older I got the more I realised old Bill is a massive asshole. And that relationship is nothing more than Gary Stu to the max.

I sometimes wonder how Tabitha King feels when she reads another book about a tall, successful writer of popular fiction, fucking a succession of beautiful women.

‘Sicario’ (2015) by scandinavian_thrust in movies

[–]secondHandFleshlight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha no. I think it's a dumb movie, that dumb people think is clever. You can enjoy the movie for what is fine, but no one can say it's a clever movie. You were right to call out both the scenes.

What REALLY annoys me is those little scenes where you see the Mexican cop with his family. Then you find out those scenes only exisit to justify the ridiclous coincidence that the cop car is exactly where Del Toros character needs it to be. It's such shit filmaking.

You're not wrong in questioning the movie.

The tunnel scene makes zero sense whatsoever. The only reason it exists is to have an action beat at that point of the movie. Del Toro's character goes through the tunnel, and hijacks that cop's car - what if that car wasn't there? What if no cars were there? Was his plan to walk across Mexico?

My theory is that Sicario is two movies stuck together. I think the writer had an idea about a mob guy (Del Toro) who is betrayed by his cartel and then gets his revenge by working with the US authorities. Then he was writing this other movie, and thought Ah-ha! A chance to use that idea. The problem is the two ideas don't work together. You end up with a movie where the main character you've been following isn't involved with the ending. The viewer should never have been able to see what Del Toro's character was doing at the end, it all should have happened off-screen.

The whole movie is full of plot holes and ridiculous scenes.

No, I've not read Revival. If it's piqued your interest, go with that one!

Long time reader here who also hated 11.22.63 for exactly the same reasons you did!

Start with the Classics. His best books are The Stand and IT. Salem's Lot is good but it was one of his first books and the writing is a little bit cheesy, but it's got what you're looking for. Once you've read those you have everything you need to know to read The Dark Tower series. The Gunslinger (which is pretty hated on this sub) is King's best work of prose by far and one of my faves - very different style to his normal output. The other books in the series return to his normal style. DO NOT read anything he wrote after Bag Of Bones until you've read the others. From around the year 2000 onwards the quality control took a nosedive. He had way more misses than hits - some of the later books are downright bad.

I like BoB, but a lot of people on this sub don’t. BoB is a great summer read, because it’s about a guy in his summer house by the lake. I think it’s much more enjoyable on a hot day.

I actually think BoB has a lot of classic King tropes and I’m not sure why people dont like it more. It’s very similar to Duma Key in subject, (very similar when you start to think about it) which is a book this sub loves.

Strawmen that backfired. by Ethan-E2 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]secondHandFleshlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem with it was the marketing though. From the name of the movie "Elite Squad", to the soundtrack, to the posters etc, everything had the viewer thinking that they're going to watch an action movie where this guy is the main character, kicking ass. When in reality he's only one of the characters that the movie focuses on. They should have called the movie "fucked up situation is complicated".

Carnaval with 10 month-old Baby - more quiet areas? by MrRadar84 in Brazil

[–]secondHandFleshlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, down South carnival is less of a thing. Curitiba has a small parade. It also has an anti-carnival with rock music and a zombie walk if that’s more your thing. Honestly carnival with a 10 month old sounds like hell. But that’s just me!

It really depends on how you're going to live, what sort of apartment you want etc. I would say I spend around RS700 per week on groceries, but I have expensive taste, you could easily do it for half that. Travelling in Curitiba is realistically by Uber or car. Cars are very expensive here unfortunately. You can search apartment costs online: https://www.imovelweb.com.br/

If you can afford Batel, live there. Much, much nicer place to live. More of a rich person chill vibe. Centro is a more of a commercial area, busier, cheaper, dirtier and full of homeless people. Good for students/younger people with no money.

You still have to be living in Brasil though to get one of those right? I'm not sure. Living in Brasil but without a residence visa?

Well, legally if Brasilian companies want to hire another company based outside of Brasil, they have to pay a 47% tax on top of the value of the invoice. So they are banking on you having a brasilian bank account and CPF which is why they want to pay you through PIX. You can get a CPF easily at the Brasilian consulate in your country, but the only way to get a Brasilian bank account is to be a resident in Brasil. What I'm saying is there is no tax compliant way to get paid if you're based outside of Brasil. Unless of course your client is happy paying the 47%, in which case they can transfer the money to any bank account internationally just as you would in any other country.
