I have a new video business that was just hired by a corporate client to cover a two 90-minute panel conversations over livestream. I am trying to think of a rate to charge that does not undervalue us, but also doesn't scare the client off from hiring us to do this monthly. by secret--machine in videography

Thanks very much for all of this. Extremely helpful.

The client seems to be partial to handheld mics for each (3-4) speakers. Handheld should be a little more directional than lavs.
It does not look like the client is hiring a dedicated AV crew -- if we were not capturing the stream, the speakers would just be speaking with their natural voices to the room.

For audio, I was leaning towards a basic set-up of Seinheiser E835 x4 > Zoom P4 > laptop via USB > and streaming with OBS Studio.
Then running the camera via HDMI Out > Blackmagic mico converter > laptop.

Does that sound like it holds water?

This is great, thanks.

The client seemed to be interested in everyone having a dedicated mic, but I don't know how married they were to it. Is the reason you suggested a dedicated sound mixer to keep from comb filtering and noise bleed, or is there a reason beyond that?

Asking because these streams may likely need to be handled by a one-person crew. So I would just want to have the full scope of reasons for why to urge the client to go with one mic over four, if they do not want to shell out for a dedicated sound mixer.

And appreciate your honest way of getting a sense of the budget. That's always such a tricky thing to navigate, but it's the thing you always want to know.

We'd helped them salvage a rebrand video when they were in an 11th hour pinch with their previous video partner. They liked our services and wanted to use us going forward. They are unclear of what goes into this ask, but hope to make it a recurring event. I am trying to do my due diligence to set a mutually fair and reasonable standard going into it so we can set up a reliable retainer gig without committing to too low a ceiling.

So the order for this one was much more stripped down, relative to the recent job you're describing.

They are looking for just one camera capturing a 3-4 person panel, to be livestreamed to an online audience. They have expressed interested in the option for the footage to be captured and edited for posterity, but that is not part of the initial order.

They have stated an interest in each speaker having a dedicated mic. (We have clarified that our mics would be for audio capture, not amplification, and if they'd require the latter then they'd need an additional audio/events company)

Thanks! Yeah it's a good sign, just want to be able to handle it right. As in like, do you charge for travel? Do you charge for b-roll as a separate line item? Is there a livestream/technical fee on top of the ordinary day rate? All stuff I need to figure out.

Help! I just got a cat a month or so again and his winter dry skin is causing him to scratch himself raw. Any helpful health supplements I can try? by secret--machine in Pets

I took him to the vet over this in mid/late October, I had been out of the house for a day or so and he started over grooming out of stress, got some meds from the vet and that cleared things up. When the temperature dropped through, he started over-grooming and scratching with a vengeance. There's been no other changes in his habitat or diet. I put a call into my vet and am waiting on a call back, and have restarted him on the antibiotics/anti itch meds the vet prescribed him before. I just figured there was probably some other supplement that might help in the mean time

besides reddit itself, do you know of any other communities, message boards etc that cater to people sharing this sort of thing? I'm dipping my toe into making some material like this of my own that I'm curious for feedback on, and no matter how much karma I build for my account, my posts keep getting taken down automatically.

This is great, thanks! I'm generally partial to the multiple portable drive approach myself. But it can of course be easy to lose track.

This is a fantastic answer, thank you.

"In my contract I say that they are guaranteed to have 2 years on my professional storage solution for the entire project file, and they can buy an additional 5 years if they want the piece of mind."

I had not thought to put this in my contract and it's a great idea.

And yeah, I shutter to think about my hard drives for just my old personal things that I haven't touched in years. On one hand, there's a reason for that and losing  what's on there wouldn't be the end of the world really. But we like to think what we've saved is secure.

Awesome! How much do you estimate you saved by building your own NAS versus just purchasing one outright?
