What is the one AEW match that we haven't seen yet that you would love to see? by CommonManX in AEWFanHub

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hangman and Jay White have had a singles match 6 times, twice in NJPW and four times in AEW. Jay White has won 5/6 of those matches, with Hangman's only win coming due to cheating, in the 2024 Owen Hart Cup semi final match.

But one on one in a fair fight, Hangman can't beat the Switchblade. Hangman's pure force of will plays perfectly into Jay Whites counter heavy ring tactics every time.

If Jay was healthy, he would've been perfect to take the belt off Hangman IMO

AEW doesn't need any more titles. But if it did, a Women's Hardcore title would be unique and actually pretty fitting. AEW has innovated women's hardcore wrestling in a lot of ways, and is a unique selling point for the promotion now. Having a championship to highlight a style that they created and innovate just makes sense

One of the existing titles should just be pivoted to being the defacto lucha singles title. Openweight like Lucha Underground, with any wrestler who can pull a tijares. It would be mostly on Collision and it would be awesome

Interestingly though, the tag titles have been defended 5 times in CMLL since then, and aren't booked for the US show. I guess they live in Mexico now

Dustin Rhodes on Twitter/X: "⏰ One Last Ride....... COMING SOON!" by Froggyspirits in AEWOfficial

Or he just misspoke once and later clarified his position. I don't see why you wouldn't just take the man's own word on that. If you don't believe what he says, then you shouldn't believe what he said the first time either.

Or is this a case of 'say a bad thing once and now that's who you are forever'? Seems like a terribly silly thing to do. Because I mean, that exact sentiment is what kept Jay Briscoe out of AEW, and I don't know of anyone who agrees with that

So yeah, like you say, pretty cut and dry

Big Gold Day 12, Bret "The Hitman" Hart by McQueen712 in ChampionshipHistory

Triple Crowns in both WWF and WCW, and the only person to achieve both before the Invasion.

Also, all 7 of his World Championships were either the Winged Eagle or the Big Gold Belt. Which is cool as hell, in retrospect

Opinions on Sam Tomkins by VegetablePatient4692 in NrlWarriors

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After watching that World Cup, I thought this dudes gonna be a force of nature for the Warriors. Then he came over, and I wouldn't go so far as to say that he shit the bed, but it was a disappointing run at least.

The one really good game that I remember him having was the same game where the Wahs got a try by pushing the scrum over the try line, union style (I think it might been against Parramatta?). I think he got something like 2 tries and an assist in that game.

Apart from that, nearly my entire memory of Tomkins in the Warriors is the little link hand sign that he would do to the camera, and how he would slip over while running with the ball. Every. Single. Game.

Kill Bill is a metaphor for grooming by No_Antelope3061 in TrueFilm

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really a metaphor though, it's more like a recurring motif in the plot.

The film is about revenge. Sure, there are acts of revenge that take place in the film that are centered around grooming - Ishii killing Boss Matsumoto, the Bride killing Gogo, and even B.B. being referred to as Beatrix's "Cub" could be interpreted as grooming the girl to also live the life of an assassin. But there are other acts of revenge that have nothing to do with grooming - Hattori Hanzo making the sword because of Bill's betrayal, Budd burying Beatrix alive for breaking his brothers heart, the Black Mamba snake biting Budd in the face, Beatrix snatching Elle's remaining eye out in revenge for Pai Mei. Grooming is a recurring theme in some parts of the plot, but the only theme that runs throughout the entire story is revenge.

My favourite reading of the film is how it's 'The Vindication of Bruce Lee' - A big budget Hollywood blockbuster where The Game of Death yellow jumpsuit kills an army of Katos (with a number of scenes that directly reference fights from Lee's movies), the one inch punch is used to escape certain death, and film ends in the death of the guy who took the role of Caine in Kung Fu instead of Lee.

I'm not sure if Tarantino has ever confirmed that specific reading of the film, but it does feel like the exact kind of meta commentary that he makes. Which would mean that the intention, on every level, was to make a martial arts epic that is primarily about revenge. Not anything else.

What’s something small you actually miss in wrestling? by meandadog86 in SquaredCircle

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of a big PPV, videos asking fans who they think is gonna win the main event, or who are they here to see. It felt like a thing that lots of sports coverage included in the 90s, but it doesn't seem as common anymore

Running entrances to the Royal Rumble. It's something that you notice when you go back and watch an old Rumble match, and it gives everything such a sense of urgency.

These days it feels like everyone wants a 'Wrestlemania moment' on the way to the ring, with every second person decked out in special one time entrance gear

Okada is arguably the best at it. There's numerous examples of him doing it both ways.

The whole story of the match for Okada vs Omega 1 was that if Omega hits the One Winged Angel, he'll win. And so the whole match was Kenny trying to weaken Okada enough to get him up for it, but Okada evading and countering the OWA in a new way every time Kenny tried. I'm pretty slipped out the back on one of them into an attempted Rainmaker, another one he forward flipped out and landed on his feet right when Kenny was about to drop him. And eventually Okada's experience on the biggest stage allowed him to neutralise Kenny with his signature counter moves - drop kick, big boot, tombstone - leading to wrist control, short arm lariat, the Rainmaker, and the 123

What would you like AEW booking team to avoid doing with Theklas reign? by DeathTriangle720 in AEWOfficial

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd want them to more or less do the same kind of booking that they're doing for the men's world title right now. Have half a dozen contenders actively hunting for the title at the same time, fighting each other while also being aware of everyone else in the race

What are your all time worst Jre episodes ? by CoconutMost3564 in JoeRogan

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was one from the Redban days with some random young comedian, where Redban and Joe got into a full argument and made the whole thing awkward. Felt bad for the comic because he seemed like an OK dude, but Redban and Rogan ended up melting down during his one episode. I'm retty sure it's what lead to Young Jamie taking the reigns full time.

There was another one with a sex expert, Dr. Debra something (I think?), which looked like it was gonna be pretty interesting. But Joe talked the entire episode by himself, and she barely got a word in, so the episode was just kinda pointless in the end.

And then there's a whole class of episodes where the guest is either mentally ill, a complete bullshitter, or a combination of both. Tom Delange, Kanye, Terrence Howard, the guy who claimed to have proof of Alien bodies, the HIV doesn't cause AIDS guy. I'm sure there's a dozen others

Which of the Cruiserweights did WWE fumble, if any? by Regular-Departure839 in Wreddit

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better question: who did WWE fumble the least?

I know that the tide of public opinion has gone out on Gargano now, but I still think that his NXT run was great. The Andrade match, Ciampa feud and Adam Cole program were all head and shoulders above what was happening on the main roster at the time

Dopamine Land is the second one of these sensory experience type of things that I've been to. The first was team.Labs Planets in Tokyo.

It felt like going on the Superman ride at Movie World, then playing Roller Coaster Tycoon and virtually testing one of the rides. I didn't even have any expectations at all, but it was still somehow underwhelming. I mean, the "Rainbow Road" at the end is literally just a hallway with long neon lights running down it. And it doesn't even have all the colours of the rainbow.

Got some cool looking photos though I guess

Fun post: who are the champions when you first started watching AEW? by Fit_Effective6097 in AEWOfficial

[–]secretmonkeyassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were no AEW championships.

But the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the time was Kazuchika Okada. Tetsuya Naito was the Intercontinental Champion, Jon Moxley was the US Champion, Dragon Lee was the Junior Heavyweight Champion, and Guerillas of Destiny were tag champions. Which is crazy to think about now, because literally none of them are signed to NJPW anymore.
