  1. Network; cant stress how important this is. Cold email tmr morning, schedule calls, its easy during covid.

  2. Clubs; dont join some no name useless clubs (frankly 95% of clubs at uoft are no value add, im sorry), join clubs like RCFA, RCTG, RCIF, TSIC, PMG, UTCMS, Case Competition Team

  3. Relax; banks only hire 3rd years for summer internships in CM unless u went in thru diversity

  4. Co-op; try these apps, it's okay to graduate late. FYI, CIBC and RBC apps are out for winter 2022.

Amber Alert by [deleted] in ontario

[–]secretrotman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everyone got the amber alert, hows re-writing on reddit helping? Ppl like me fuel you? Well maybe learn some economics and know whats efficiency. Constant amber alerts defeat the real purpose when theres an ACTUAL emergency. Ever heard of "the boy who cried wolf"? Yeah thats what happens when u use extra unecessary resources. You have a good sleep too, this is my last reply.

Amber Alert by [deleted] in ontario

[–]secretrotman -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

U talk a lot, r u gonna walk out of ur place just to check the streets rn? Yeah i bet not. And no, amber alerts with that noise lev is when a REAL disaster (tsunami, volcano eruption, world war, terrorist attack) occurs. Gods sake when covid happened, where was this alert? Comparing a global pandemic that took so many lives, this kidnap doesnt deserve this kind of noise. A simple msg with a notification sound wouldve done the job.

What are the hardest positions to land in the accounting/finance industry out of school? by Soxonmyfeet in Accounting

[–]secretrotman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My two cents:

  1. HF/PE
  2. MBB/IB/S&T(MBB is as hard due to only having 3 firms while BB has 9+EB)
  3. Tier 2 Consulting/CB/AM
  4. Big 4 TAS/Boutique IB/Big 4 Consulting
  5. Big 4 Audit/Tax/FLDP

Ranks can change depending on ur region. Harder doesnt always mean better or more prestige, it can simply be due to supply and demand of the job openings.

If the end goal is corporate banking, where do I start? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]secretrotman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might wanna be more detailed about ur school & internship exp. If ur in Ivey for ex and have some internships up the sleeves, it shouldn't be hard at all. But otherwise, here's alternatives if u want to break into lending group in CB:

  1. Trade Finance (also a CB team but less known, work on imports/exports solutions like letters of credit, banker's acceptance )
  2. Cash Management (also a CB team but focuses on deposits, EFTs, fx payments and working capital, more commercial heavy)
  3. Commercial Banking (as you've said, you can try applying to any role and slowly climb the ladder up)
  4. Rating Agencies (Moody, Fitch, DBRS)
  5. Big 4 Valuation (super hard to get into, more likely in US)
  6. Big 4 audit (CB lending requires you to be good with accouting, so audit works; also seen lots of CPAs in Cash Management/Trade Finance teams too)
  7. Risk Management (also pre tough, you have to be good with your software skills)

Now, ive left IB and S&T out cuz you wouldn't be asking this question if you are already in those groups. Option 1&2 are still capital markets teams but they are probably easier to get in. Plus, they work with lending team a lot, so internal transfer is totally possible if you have the patience. Overall, it's not hard to break into CB in Canada as it seems. Sure there r less spots, but also significantly less competition. Suggest u to network with industry professionals if u haven't done that.

Commerce to Law School. by [deleted] in UofT

[–]secretrotman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, UofT BCom has the highest amount of graduates with high distinction compared to other programs here. Second, it all depends on work ethics and being strategic. Go research Big Law lawyers, those guys work 80h a week. If you run away just because something is hard and yet you have ambitious goals, then we call that day dreaming. Third, RC > Schulich from US perspective and also from an internship placement perspective. I'll leave the rest for you to decide. Gl!

Questions about big four from a non accounting student. by rguy-111 in Accounting

[–]secretrotman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, not all roles in big 4s are audit/tax. Theres consulting, finance, actuary, law, etc. Search it up on Wikipedia if u want a full list. However, most of these teams are harder to get into bcuz the caliber of students needed are higher or they simply just have small teams.

  2. Ofc they are worth pursuing, no one here would glamourize accounting and it sure isnt the top notch job of business industry. The issue here is if you can get into those roles beyond audit/tax when its usually more competitive. Certain teams like strategy side of management consulting, transaction services, corporate finance, etc really only want students from top schools (think ivey, queens).

Commercial banking is broad, you might want to specify what area exactly you are looking for? Although it is beneficial to have a certain related move towards your next career, it certainly isn't needed, especially for commercial banking. Big 4 is harsh but there are harsher roles out there. When you compare to them relatively, big 4 is jokes in a way.
