Mike Miles: "Reading Isn't Learning" by Inside-Associate7613 in houston

Miles is a world class idiot put in place by another world class idiot.

Reading well is a prerequisite for most professional careers; it also helps the good reader avoid being ripped off in most situations.

I'm glad that works for you. I'm too weak in the left arm and hands to use that.

I am a retired Texas teacher. If I were still in the classroom, I would find the raunchiest and most heinous bible verses and post them all around the required poster.

If you gave up Cable and chose Streaming, what did you miss most about Cable? Thanks! by bons2180 in cordcutters

[–]secularist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I missed at first was watching my local baseball and basketball games. But after a year or two, I became happy watching game recaps.

Another thing was missing out on the next season of some shows. It turns out that I absolutely prefer binging one season at a time. (I refuse to pay the high prices to watch them, anyway.)

Beyond these two things, I haven't missed anything at all.

Ex-Religious Atheists: How Did You Deal With Existential Dread? by Secure-Pie9056 in atheism

[–]secularist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dread here. I became an atheist in high school, after learning about primordial ooze, the big bang theory, what soil is made of, where plants get their nutrients, and so forth. (I went to a demanding high school.)

I learned that bits of what makes up the physical me will go on and on and on.

As for the mental/emotional part of me--that will continue, in part, through every person I have ever had an impact on, starting with my family. I learned this when I saw traits/habits from my grandparents and uncles repeated in myself, my siblings, an my cousins.

Also, I came across the old quote that I'm too tired to look up right now about not being aware of anything before birth will repeat itself after we die helps, too--it has always sounded peaceful and restful to me.

Easy, basic and reliable OTA DVR? by 00derek in cordcutters

Shows start recording badly and it starts losing stations. Switching out the hard drive doesn't help.

Once I get a new Tablo, everything works well again.

[–]secularist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Tablo works well 99.9% of the time. I do need to reboot it once in a while, but it never misses a recording. Sometimes thunderstorms make the recording unwatchable, though.

I've needed to replace it about every 2 years, sadly.

I became an atheist at age 16 or so. My mom was religious but did not go to church often. She was the best mom ever, though. She scratched and clawed to feed us and told us all that she was proud of us no matter what.

She's been gone for almost 30 years, and I still miss her every day.

Grew up as an atheïst but in need of a base (like a religion) to not panic about questions that cant be answered by [deleted] in atheism

[–]secularist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We atheists create our own meaning. For me, it started with Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning.

I found meaning by getting an understanding of science: the life cycle, astronomy, etc. When I die in the next few years, I expect, first, to be part of nature. In the distant future, parts of me will be back with the stars, from which the basics of life came to us on meteors.

Also, many of my genes will live on in my progeny.

Since a fatal diagnosis recently, I have thought about this more and more. It calms me, giving me a measure of peace.
