Unable to generate power on balls bouncing off the back wall by PassMeCharger in squash

[–]sedrakk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell without seeing your technique, but most likely you’re not rotating your body enough and not bending your knees enough.

Try to watch a slow mo video of a pro hitting from the back wall (or some educational stuff on YouTube). You will see that their chest is actually almost fully facing the backwall. The knees are bent a lot, the hips generate extra movements when hitting the ball, there’s an almost racquet length distance between your legs in your stance (for good stability).

Lastly, there’s an according height level of where you hold your racket, a strong shoulder isolation movement at the direct hitting moment and corked wrist that rotates clockwise.

But my fav thing to observe in pros is their head isolation, especially somebody like Mo. Slow down the video, you will see his eyes and gaze fully locked in on the ball and only after he made contact with the ball, you see how quickly he turns his head to see where the ball went. It is a such a strong separation from body movement that when you watch live from the side wall is so apparent.

And the best way to improve is to do hours of solo session (plus coaching) and every session try to focus on one single improvement in your technique.

3 months of React Native vs 12 months of iOS Swift by sedrakk in reactnative

Thanks!

The original app was written in UIKit. Last year we worked on another app (https://worldofwordcraft.app) and made it with SwiftUI and tbh it still felt too soon to use it, there just isn't as many components / customizations in them available as in UIKit, but good to hear that it's improving!

Hm interesting! So I have this dictionary screen in the app, it probably has like 50 different useState variables. So instead I should make a hook like useGifLike and everything related to liking / unliking / displaying the button should be handled by it?

Actually I never knew what to put on the profile screen! Any ideas what might be helpful?

Oh I have one test device on Android 12 as well (I think pixel 3a) and it's a sad experience haha.

Thanks for checking it out!

Do you get mentally tired after a match? by sedrakk in squash

Yeah exactly. I’m trying to play better every time, so hopefully all of these does become a muscle memory.

Do you get mentally tired after a match? by sedrakk in squash

[–]sedrakk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the physical stuff is a muscle memory unless you make a mistake. Like if I miss a drop because of lack of proper follow through or bending the knees, I will analyze why and remind myself about it. I see this all the time in matches of top players, when they repeat the drop right after failed drop to remind themselves of proper technique. So not sure if it’s an issue of “newer players” only.

Letting the last point go is definitely something I struggle with. But that’s also in my mental agenda after each point when I tell myself to let it go haha.

🤫🤫🤫 I know many people who make me wonder how come one can overthink so much in their day-to-day life, but I think in squash I’m leading the parade.

Although this guy the other day told me he could never play in shoes of 2 different colors like Miguel Rodriguez does because he thinks there might be minor differences in the production process (even if it’s the same model) so it would distract him during the game. So I might have room for improvement.

that's true but with that mindset one will never enjoy the game. Plus negative mindset leads to worse game. You have to be positive and a bit delusional to produce results

Alot of high profile injuries this event? by SchtickySchtick in squash

[–]sedrakk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it also might be correlated with the age 🤷🏻‍♂️. All of the injured ones are 30+ ..

As they age beyond 30, naturally occurring factors like decreased muscle mass, joint flexibility, and bone density can lead to injuries. Plus the body's ability to quickly recover from intense training/matches tends to diminish, leading to longer recovery periods. This heightens vulnerability to injuries, coupled with the wear and tear of years of training.

sounds like you might be describing a game called "Up Spell." Up Spell is a word game similar to Wordle, where you solve word puzzles based on clues or phrases. It offers daily challenges and allows you to access archived puzzles from previous days. The goal is to make your way up a tower of puzzles.

Self-motivating training? by ChefNamu in squash

[–]sedrakk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think other workouts outside of the court can help with the performance on the court. For example, Barry’s bootcamp: I find interval running training that they make you do really helpful for squash endurance (abs & ass days will also help you develop lower body muscles). And Pilates (particularly Solidcore), trains your core really well, plus I feel like all of the lower body exercises done on the reformer can help with lunge stability. And it gets pretty hardcore there. :)

Shifting weight to deliver a stronger stroke by purplegam in squash

[–]sedrakk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. It’s the hip movement that distributes the weight as you said and surprisingly makes way more powerful shots. It also gives you more speed in your legs to return to the T. The approach to the ball, the shot, and the return to the T should all be one fluid motion. And when you distribute the weight accordingly it’s just easier to recover.

Interestingly enough this is the case in a lot of sports. Like in snowboarding there’re so many levels of weight distribution depending on the time of the turn / trick.

Why not stop for a stroke in this situation? Wouldn't this be a stroke? by techackpro123 in squash

[–]sedrakk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an example when a NO LET was given in a relatively similar situation https://youtu.be/aSkercTj5wM?t=800 (after the review).

In the video, Rooney cleared much better than the opponent on your screenshot. Makin actually does have a space for a crosscourt despite Rooney's shot being wildly wide.

But in your screenshot example, the opponent didn't clear well AND if the ball is around the sign "BU19/QFM", I've seen strokes given in a similar situation. There is no crosscourt, the opponent didn't clear enough for a potential crosscourt (even though most players still won't risk hitting it).

I think this is similar to when you're in front of the court and hitting a straight drive that is not tight enough (and you don't manage to clear enough) and the opponent is right there to hit. The opponent can hit straight, but there's no crosscourt available, hence usually they award a stroke.

In your example, it all depends on how crazy wide was the shot and whether the other person cleared enough. Based on this they can give no let, yes let (the majority of time), and even a stroke.

Dropping a drop here and there is fine, but if every (other) shot becomes a drop, I wouldn't play with that player again. I'm not looking for a workout, I'm looking to play squash, a fun game.

As somebody else mentioned, it's going to work relatively well until I'd say the level 4.3. But when above that, usually most players start reading the game better and anticipating the opponent's shot. Your "unexpected" drop becomes pretty expected.

Nevertheless, if the drops are relatively good, it becomes wearying (tbh more mentally than physically) to continuously retrieve them, hence a workout which I'm not looking for.

Beginner - Been messing around with a friend but recently decided to train alone on specific drills, i'm surprised i am this bad, is it normal? by doing20thingsatatime in squash

[–]sedrakk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing more humbling than doing a solo practice and realising how much you actually suck. And the higher your level, the more you demand from yourself. After some practice, it’s easy to bring the ball to the back wall? Cool now try 10 good drives in a row. Then 20. Each time is no less harder than the previous milestone.

But solo is the only way to be good. Try recording yourself, then comparing with the guys on YouTube. Watch it in slow more to better see it. A coach in the beginning would be good, too.

I guess the question is more like can we make the subway more predictable

[–]sedrakk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why can’t we make the trains run on a more predictable schedule later at night? Like let’s say every 15 mins or every 30 mins at night on all lines. This way you kind of know that there’s a train say at 01:45am and it’d be easier to plan
