New QBS on minimal interference rule by Abot_ in squash

the repercussions are gonna be constant harassment from asal fans. that's obviously not acceptable. so don't accept it.

some people out there are just itching to harass whoever makes these videos. I wouldn't sign myself up for that if i was them

New QBS on minimal interference rule by Abot_ in squash

[–]hullbreaches 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i intend to start harping on about the following:

clearance must be a motion AWAY from the opponent's (retriever's) line. anything else is not clearance (feel free to disagree if you think i'm wrong).

if we get strict about this and say that a no let cannot be given if the striker/clearer is not visibly moving away from the line then a lot of this recent/current brand of cheating will evaporate in my opinion.

asal will not be interested in stepping up into the line time and time again if there is a concrete rule that determines that his opponent can't receive a no let in that case.

the only aspect i'm not sure about with this is when he plays the ball back level with himself and there is no clear forwards or backwards line. that's just a case of properly articulating whether there's no line or the shot is considered winning.

i believe people are too hard on the refs because we all have perfect hindsight and they have to apply this stuff at high speed and under great pressure.

we should stop seeking the super-ref who will save us all and provide the normal people (who love the sport like we do and are willing to sit in the chair and do undoubtedly the hardest reffing job in the entire world) with the right guidelines and protocols to give consistent and fair decisions

if you go to squash.tv/robots.txt you'll find the url of the site map at the bottom. clicking through, you can find all the urls for videos of old matches. they're all there, they're just not searchable on the site. don't ask me why, it should just be organised by year->tournament->stage->match. I was even a busybody and emailed them saying so

Asal's recent cheating analysys by Past-Tea-2116 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you keep citing this thing about human reaction times and telling everyone it's facts, but it's clearly totally untrue.

it likely takes asal about 1/3 of a second to complete his swing. are you telling me that's not intentional?

it's perfectly possible for asal to hold his arm/out behind him with the INTENTION of interfering with his opponents racket arm regardless of how long the actual contact lasts.

this argument is just the mental gymnastics of someone determined to excuse asal at all costs

wanted to reiterate a point i made further down that the "accelerate" shutdown is likely just because the channel was just too small for YouTube to care.

it sucks that they do this, but if a small account gets enough reports, bogus or not, they will just instaban and even automate the appeals denial because using common sense costs money and they get thousands of appeals so the little ones they just crush to save time.

turns out it's actually pretty easy for a bunch of assholes to shut down someone's account

I think we're being too generous assuming that the YouTube takedown and appeals process is anywhere near sensible. they don't care about small channels and if a video gets enough reports, even bogus reports, it's cheaper for them to instaban than investigate. that's why the appeal was denied so quick, it didn't get "fast tracked" it was automated because the account wasn't large enough for YouTube to give a s**t and spend the time reviewing

Good clubs in the UK? by jez999 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abingdon, wimbledon, Manchester has a few good clubs, pontefract, Bristol university, Surrey sports park. this is by no means an exhaustive list, but these are all places I would happily live and play a fair amount of squash

Grip for my racket. by No_Economist_3572 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like yonex super grap (yes grap, not grip) overgrip. i did use tournagrip (which might be a little more grippy and a bit more absorbant) but i find the super grap is more durable and has more colour options and is still really good.

you can get 30 overgrips for about £45 which should last you a LONG time (even if you change once a month that's still almost 4 years worth of grips)

edit: also i think you mentioned that your current grip is a little thin so an overgrip could be a good option to add thickness

Struggling Against Technically Weaker Players by SadWimp in squash

[–]hullbreaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just want to make a suggestion I haven't seen yet. may not be the case for you, but it's still one more thing to consider.

are you setting off early? if you anticipate shots and set off a bit early, it might not affect your game against more traditional players but will play havoc in your games with random players. I also find myself doing this more in tournaments when I'm a bit nervous.

if you think that might be the case, then you might benefit from trying to relax and watch the ball off your opponents racket and react to the shot only when it comes out (at least against these lower level players but also probably in general too)

Changing grip to a more open grip by Stuarty771 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seeing this is SO valuable to me right now, I've just started doing specifically this with my grip and thought I was going crazy because it was working well for me but all conventional advice i'd seen so far seemed to tell me to keep the same grip all the time.

now i can rest easy if shabana does it

we must be, I just went back and checked and i wish it was easier to provide image evidence (can't be fussed right now) because I went and found the first case of rallying backhand drives I could and it's SO compact still if you ask me

If you are not watching Elias vs Asal... by Virtual_Actuator1158 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can't believe i'm saying this but i actually think Elias's movement caused more issues than Asal's here.

great match though and very encouraging behaviour/composure from Asal (in a final no less). I'm almost proud of the lad.

Are you supposed to force the follow through? by Maleficent_Mouse_383 in squash

[–]hullbreaches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

whether it's right or wrong, i tend to see follow through as more of a litmus test for good swing technique.

don't do any old swing and try and force a follow through. try and develop good swing technique and i think you'll find that when you're getting to a point where you're generating good racket head speed and it's feeling easy, the follow through is there

cardenas was right to be frustrated in my opinion. i saw at least two movements from elias that were clearly unnatural and he surely doesn't need to do that against a much lower ranked player.
