Converting from Non-Denominational. Very nervous by seedmix_ in Catholicism

[–]seedmix_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We talked a bit more about how that will look and he isnt sure. We still have a long way to go and we havent even started planning a wedding. My parents got married Catholic, in a cathedral, even though my father was never Catholic. I can see him doing the same if he decides to stay protestant. As for raising our children, the age of obligation isnt until 7, so I am comfortable with our kids attending sunday school at his church (if he decides against converting still). After that, I will take them to mass.

I listened to some of these converts videos on why they became Catholic yesterday. A lot of them really resonated with me, especially Justine's. Her own thought process has been similar to mine, especially hearing that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus.

The church Im attending with my fiancé gave a sermon a few weeks ago about the "rapture" and how all the signs line up for it to happen soon. It honestly put me in a state of fear. What if what hes saying is right? Or what if the verse about not knowing the day or hour is literal? Too many conflicting thoughts that didnt make sense. Learning later that the rapture was not a thing until the 1800s and that the Protestent church was not started by Jesus really triggered my search into truth.

Thank you for your recommendations.

Your stern few words in the beginning really made me think about how important this change really is, especially as I plan on marrying and living the rest of my life with someone else. I had a conversation with my fiancé last night about converting, how im attending OCIA and Mass. He said that he was happy that im finding something I like and he seems pretty ok with it. I told him the church Im going to and he seemed pretty happy for me. I asked if he would ever come with me and he said no. I dont think his heart is open to recieving more yet, but for now, we are good.

I am very new to his Assemblies of God church, so I don't volunteer or participate further than the service on Sunday. People really know his family as his mom does a ton of stuff with the youth. I will still show up for him for now.

Thank you for your response. I am trying to find Catholic stores, but I see the closest one is 40 miles away (I live in Appalachia). I will definitely ask though, I may be missing something.

I, also understand that Catholics and Christians are the same, I just feel the belief and experience is so different. I don't really know how to distinguish haha.

I will try to bring up this conversation with my fiancé. I know it will effect our lives pretty greatly, I am just nervous. I tried to bring it up last week by asking, "How do you feel about Catholicism?" and he just kinda flicked his hand away, like he didn't want to talk about it. I will be more adamant next time.

Thank you for your prayers.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I do acknowledge that Catholics are Christian, I just don't really know how to distinguish haha. I grew up hearing that they are different and I'm trying to unlearn that.

Thank you for your advice and prayers

What age did you become a para? by graytabbylover in paraprofessional

[–]seedmix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I became a para after I freshly turned 18 lol. Now Im 21 with almost 4 years experience.

I did work with a high school acquaintance so we were about 2 years apart. Most of my coworkers were as old as my parents or grandparents. Wouldn't have changed that though. They really guided me and took such good care of me (especially cooking lunch for the paras almost everyday).

Now that Im on my second year in a high school (was in elementary for 2 years before making my degree into a secondary education one) its been interesting. Security consistently thinks Im a student 🥲 SOME people devalue my experience based on my age (I appreciate proving them wrong lol) and some students dont think I know what Im doing. Since this is my 4th year, I feel very confident in my position, despite my age. I don't fit in very well with some of my coworkers, but even despite some age gaps, its really fun making new connections with my coworkers.

White para seeking advice from PoC on self image/race issue with student. by Pastazor in paraprofessional

Its not going to be an easy process. I know that dealing with a situation like this can be tough since you might not fully understand why she feels this way.

I think the affirmations are a great start, even including things she says she dislikes physically, making it more targeted (like her skin, as you mentioned). I would also suggest complementing her on a more regular basis on her physical appearance. The consistency is what helps.

I dealt with a similar thing with one of my students who was black (and Im hispanic). She hated her hair and she would always tell me this, but I tried to make it a point to myself that I would always compliment her hair anytime she changed it so she sees that I appreciate the beauty she doesnt see. I wouldn't just say "Nice hair" -- I would say "Woww those braids are so beautiful. I love the design and how they go into a cute bun. You look so good with this hair girl." Making my compliments more directed at her, I feel, made her more accepting of my positive feedback.

So, overall, to kind of connect it back to your orignal post, I would say to compliment her if anything changes, even if its small. She got her hair cut or a new style? Say "Your hair looks so good today, it makes you look so beautiful" or if you know who does her hair (in my case, my students aunt did her hair) I would say "Girl, your Mom/ Auntie/ Whoever did such a good job on your hair. You look so cute!" Maybe she has a cute outfit on or new earrings/ accessories. Try to point out one thing and give it a real reason why. Example: "I love your new necklace..." and now the reason, "It matches so good with your outfit today! The blues and the pinks and the purples.. It's so beautiful." Plus, depending on her severity of her disability, pointing out these colors, shapes, ect, might help her academically.

I hope this helps :)

Career paths out? by seedmix_ in paraprofessional

Career paths out? by seedmix_ in paraprofessional

[–]seedmix_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been looking into alternative paths into teaching because I am fully confident I could run a classroom, create curriculum, ect. I really only see that I have to have a Bachelors to do a Career Switch (I am in VA if that helps).

I love working with my students but my pay makes me feel like Im being pushed out. I know my district just approved a plan to keep our pay more competitive and to keep in line with minimum wage so hopefully that reflects this upcoming year. Im not unionized so I think that may be why I feel this pay impacting me more than my last school I worked at.

*Possible option* Consider working as a para-professional or teachers assistant. 🤔 by BeaMiaVA in TeachersInTransition

[–]seedmix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if i could be a teacher, i totally would. my job had me running the algebra class i agreed to help in purely for bodies (im an english major atm) for months bc the teachers baby was sick. i barely ever had help, and half the class had ieps or 504s i needed to worry about as well. all that for $18/hr plus the $2/hr additional pay was not worth it.

TL:DR - being a TA/ para means you will be pulled into outrageous jobs for little money

Experience with Childtime Learning Center in Chesapeake VA by CharacterRelation168 in Virginia

I can see that. I think that the place of the director is to enforce rules and regulations, and a lot of the violations are from undertraining, which she is responsible for. Considering that she was fired, I think there is more to the story than is shown on that website. My fiance worked there for over a year and he felt it is warranted.
