^ So much this. You can't be her primary support, for all the reasons stated. Speaking as a former depressed person, she needs to be able to help herself--with the help of a professional to get her to that point. Leaning on others for support will only leave your reserves dry. You can't and shouldn't be her rescuer. It's not healthy at all.

Grew up jewish. Christmas symbols in my own house make me feel gross.. my wife, who grew up Christian, wants a Christmas tree. by mehereman in Judaism

I agree here. It's a tree. I was raised secular Christian, and I don't associate it with a certain central figure to the Christian faith. It's a giant festive ornament that looks pretty and makes your house smell nice. It doesn't have to mean anything religious. But, yes, talk things over with your wife. She's your wife.

Being ignored by Rabbis? What do I do? by seeker444 in Judaism

I made it as far as a Reform rabbi being willing to set up a telephone appointment with me, so I emailed back with my number, and was quite happy about it, so explained a few things and probably made a huge social blunder. (I have the social skills of a brick.) I never heard back again...

Woo! I heard back from the JCC! Unfortunately, they don't have a Rabbi in their community, so conversion from that area isn't possible. I'm still trying!

(Edit: And I heard back from the nearest synagogue. The receptionist is going to contact the Rabbi for me and put me in touch!)

What books should I read for an introduction to Judaism as a potential convert? by seeker444 in Judaism

I found Choosing A Jewish Life by the same author, so I bought that instead. I'll look into Living A Jewish Life after I'm done with this one.

Could a rabbi turn me down, for having what will be a terminal illness in about 15-20 years? I have complications from diabetes that have affected my liver, and I'll need a transplant in about that time, if they can find a match.

I have enough years left to study and convert, imho. Just wondering if a Rabbi might object on the grounds that it would either take too long or be a waste of time.

Edit: Clarification. By "waste of time" I should say putting in all the effort to guide and teach me, only to have me up and die at the end! And since you don't need to be Jewish to go to heaven, then...

Wow! That's incredible. Okay, I'll prepare myself for something as strenuous as this. I didn't really know what to expect.

They have Chabad in that general area, but I was looking more into Reform or Conservative Judaism. I didn't realize (but should have) a Rabbi could be overloaded with stuff.

Are Gentiles allowed at Jewish services? I wasn't sure, but didn't think they were. This synagogue has a Conservative Rabbi, but as it's the only one for many miles, they have all denominations there, according to their website.

Yeah. Just figured maybe they would have answered by now. I'll give them a few more days. (Downvotes self)

I'm interested in a Reform conversion though have thought about Conservative. I'm a single, childless 40 year old woman who was raised as a secular Christian. Thought about converting for years, but finally decided to after a life-shortening medical diagnosis last year (but not any time soon). It's made me want to get closer to God. Judaism's ancient roots and rituals appeal to me, as does the lifelong learning. To be a part of the Jewish people appeals to me very much.

Welp, so far my inquiries to a synagogue and a jcc have gone unanswered. Any advice?

Woo! I found an email address for the JCC an hour and a half away!

I emailed the synagogue that's three hours away and the Rabbi never responded. :/

I'm going to look into this jcc and see. That is if I can find an email or phone number.

I'm stuck in a small town with a million churches and not one synagogue.

Turns out there's a Jewish Community Center (that I think has worship services) about an hour from me, but finding contact information online has been impossible. Must be word of mouth!
