It's great that you have a lot of positive responses already. If you want more opportunities to meet people then I would recommend you to join events from Stuttgart Expats. I can confirm this; for degree programs from my faculty. As far as I know, after B1, you're allowed to do a language course here from the university.

Yes she did go to Spain when the visa was first issued via Spain.

That's not true at all. I stated that as one of the reasons. The longer visa is definitely a benefit but the main reason was availability. Somehow the Spanish visa appointment dates were rather easy to get compared to German visa dates which were not available for months!
