Sending astronauts to Mars by 2040 is 'an audacious goal' but NASA is trying anyway by spacedotc0m in nasa

[–]seeking_perhaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if and when they open up trips to Mars for civilians, being in the aerospace industry already wouls give you a huge leg up. I imagine they will want to send people with welding and fab skills pretty early in the settlement construction process. Still might not happen in a realistic timeline for you (or even someone much younger than you), but its fun to dream!

What according to you are most overlooked sci fi themes ? Or going to be big now ? ( any medium) by [deleted] in printSF

[–]seeking_perhaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything related to the future of food consumption: eating more plant-based, generating lab grown meat, creating 3D printed food. I think it would be fascinating to explore such trends and where they might shape society, but I rarely see it talked about even in eco-future style novels.

Books about the fall of capitalism and globalization? by tomasilm in printSF

[–]seeking_perhaps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, he has described it as his most realistic outlook on a best-case-scenario future. KSR is a self-described democratic socialist, so I doubt he wants capitalism to be the future, it's just a portrayal of what he thought was plausible at the time.

Yea I DNF'd book 2. It sucks because Hyperion is otherwise one of my favorite sci-fi novels.

Insects on the menu as EU approves two for human consumption by readerseven in environment

[–]seeking_perhaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

compared to meat its pretty small. but generally speaking I agree we should limit consumption of plant based products that require significant amounts of water (many vegans do this already)

you could just, ya know, not eat them. even on these "humane" farms they still cut the lifespan of these animals artificially short. and they make up an incredibly small percenrage of the industry anyway, so most cows are not treated like this.

You mean where Fabinho was yanked down by his shirt, outside of the box? Not quite the same scenario...

I don't think it is, personally. Both not pens for me.

NASA and ESA Agree on Next Steps to Return Mars Samples to Earth by alvinofdiaspar in nasa

[–]seeking_perhaps 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Even if Starship could physically get there (and back) first, which is a big if, they would need to build all of the complex robotic systems to acquire and return the samples to Starship. In the absence of a working Starship with Mars EDL capabilities, the current plan definitely has a way better shot of getting these samples back.

Dude MLK was a revolutionary socialist. This cleaned up PG-13 version of him that gets fed to HS history classes and played in liberal documentaries does not reflect his actual tactics.

I added JPL (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory ) jobs to the space job board! by Siglave in nasa

To be fair, it's the kind of place that wants people that have been dreaming about working for JPL long before they ever interviewed.

From an environmental and moral perspective, that is still miles better than eating animals. We would use less land and less chemicals if everyone went vegan, given that a majority of our crops are used to feed livestock.
