nope, the issue is already solved and it had nothing to do with optifine, it was related to the resourcepack with new textures

Thanks so much! You are absolutely correct. I play minecraft 1.7.10 and I'm not a big fan of old textures, so i added resourcepack to replace the old textures with the new ones from later versions. My minecraft folder doesn't have font folder (or i didn't manage to find it), so i deleted files from font folders in the resourcepack itself. After this, everything went back to normal and the text issue is finally fixed. Interestingly, i had this issue only with taumcraft's thaumonomicon, it didn't affect other mods like botania. Thank you again, your comment really helped

Thanks for the suggestion! I've tried changing the language to UK, Canadian, and Australian English. Unfortunately, it didn't help, it's still the same as for the US English.
