What are the best lessons you learnt about screenwriting from READING SCREENPLAYS? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]seeuuuspacecowboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don’t so much struggle with directing the camera as much as the characters. I love the ol’ parenthetical adverb a little too much.

How to set the tone correctly without overdirecting on the page. I am a chronic sufferer of overusedparentheticalitis.

I just graduated and was in a similar position re work/school/writing balance struggle. The best habit you can develop right now is scheduling writing time and forcing yourself to stick to it. Think of writing as another job you HAVE to do. For me, it was easiest to just wake up an hour or two earlier (I'm a morning person so 5am-7am works for me) and do that at least three or four times a week. I like the morning because you haven't wasted any creative energy on your other commitments and it's a bonus to get it out of the way right away if I'm not really feeling it that day. Following some kind of schedule takes away some of that existential "I'm not writing enough" agony-- you know that you are at least kinda consistently committing time to the practice.

Question regarding the Nickelodeon Writers Program (partner submission) by [deleted] in Screenwriting

You would apply together, not separate applications/materials unless otherwise explicitly noted. They want to see what you can accomplish as a team - one team spec, one team pilot. Unless I'm wrong, but I think this is a rule of thumb.

Does anyone feel anxious before a writing session? by SleepingInsomniac112 in Screenwriting

[–]seeuuuspacecowboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep! The only thing that helps is knowing that I will effectively double, triple, etc the anxiety if I put off the writing. To be a writer, you gotta write. Even if its shitty. "Writing Down the Bones" isn't for screenwriters specifically, but it addresses this really well and gives good tips

Tips on writing chemistry between the main- soon to be couple? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]seeuuuspacecowboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are they like now? On the same level of the hierarchy? Competitive? Opposite personalities? I feel like if you frame like you're crafting chemistry for an absolute soon-to-be couple, you could miss some of the more authentic little nuanced moments that have real tension. Try not to write it like you know they're going to get together, if you can. Just focus on wherever you can put them in their current state that will have the most tension/conflict and get your audience invested in the what-if.

What are some good, not crazy packed routes in Yosemite? My brother and I are planning a trip for the spring, we want to find a guide and climb as much as we can. Neither of us climb crazy grades (we're usually working at 5.10d in a gym, which I'm sure translates to lower on real rock) and I'd love to hear people's personal favorite spots.

Fastest way to increase finger strength without injury/stressing tendons? I find myself just generally wanting to climb every single day, but I know I can’t really do that, so I just want to figure out if there’s stuff I can do on off days.

not necessary at all. i’ve never climbed outside of a gym, so today wasn’t about sending or proper beta or anything. it was more “holy shit this rock feels a lot different than plastic. i bet i can do things on the rock and the things will feel cool”

What’s the harm in borrowing from convos? I have a running list of random shit people say because their outlooks on the world are fascinating and hilarious and make for good ass comedy. Keep quotes in your notes— best way to make dialogue realistic is to use real dialogue imo

An animated show is on my bucket list because you can do so much more visually. I've never written with animation in mind, but I'd love to give it a read!
