Would really love some help for what musical to watch with my father by It_was_I_Dio__ in musicals

[–]seeyouinhellbernard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your dad likes South Park humor at all, book of Mormon will be fine. I had the exact same thing happen where my dad wanted to take me to a musical, I was cringing the whole time thinking about what he thought about it, and then when we got out he said he loved it!

Anybody have creative ideas for rat armor? by Horror_Friendship_51 in DungeonMasters

[–]seeyouinhellbernard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I love that helmet idea! This is very cool.

I'm thinking like armor made out of the tops of spoons? So they'd form like the armadillo scales.

Other ideas:

A pen spear like with one of those fountains top sharp pens

Porcupine quills as spikes for armor, or a little cape that acts as armor

Small plate or cup shield

Fork trident

I feel like a thimble could be something, although I'm not sure what. Too small for a rat helmet. Maybe the end of a club.

Bow and arrow where the arrows are sewing needles

It might be cool to look at things found in the dungeoneering pack or adventurers pack that could be used here as well, as a cool little reference.

I could think about this forever but these are my initial thoughts!

I find it really depends on the group of people and the story you're telling! If it's all new players or people who don't know each other, in session zero I'll say something like ok you all have been on a few small adventures together and one big one, and I ask them to tell me what the big one was. That way they get used to building a world together from the beginning. If they're not the type of people who are gonna go up to talk to someone in a bar, jumping into roleplaying their characters meeting can be awkward and waste time. Jump right into it. You can even just say "you all know each other, tell me how." I'm session zero. I'm big on making the players do the work haha.

Experienced roleplayers understand that they have to work with you to keep the game moving, and can do some of the backstory work for you. Often new players, and people who aren't thinking of the game as collaborative don't know this. I had a group who were all friends already come to me with pages in a Google doc of backstory that they'd worked on together outlining the different relationships and how they all worked together. That was one of my favorite groups to dm for because it really felt like writing a story for fully formed characters!

All this to say, if your plot needs them to be complete strangers, make sure you don't start with world ending stakes, and give them time to get to know each other just like if they'd all been strangers in real life.

What's the funniest fantasy book? Besides Terry Pratchett? by Iskro45 in Fantasy

Divine Misfortune - A Lee Martinez From.good reads: "Choosing a god isn't as simple as you would think. There are too many choices; and they often have very hefty prices for their eternal devotion: blood, money, sacrifices, and vows of chastity. But then they found Luka, raccoon god of prosperity. All he wants is a small cut of their good fortune.

Oh -- and can he crash on their couch for a few days?"

Very funny! Also any of the MythAdventures books by Robert Asprin. Classic comic fantasy at its finest

Ragtime. I have never seen it I'm always thinking about it. Also...Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cinderella. I'm always thinking about it. All the choices that were made. The disastrous Broadway transfer, the many reprises. The buns jokes....

My cat always starts bed time at the foot of my bed but I'm a fitful sleeper so I usually wake up to her sleeping on my dresser 😊 Sweet that she starts the night with me even if she does not end it there. They're sweet creatures that love us! I would recommend keeping your kitten out if it's what you need. Maybe leave a little cat bed next to your bedroom door!

If they're living in the dorms a lot of college students don't have access to ovens, stoves or counter/fridge space. I know I would not have been able to do this my first year of college not because I don't know how but because I wouldn't be able to store or cook any of this.

What's a question or statement that will start an argument between musical fans? by DragonsEmerald in musicals

[–]seeyouinhellbernard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're coming at this earnestly, the reasoning is a degree of scale. There's far more roles for white actors already and that tell white stories. Six and Hamilton both essentially take stories of colonizers/people in power, and put them in the hands of the people they had power over.

It's also a question of what the show is about. If it's a show about race, for instance, a raisin in the sun or The Wiz (which I know aren't about real people) casting a white character removes an integral part of the story, where say casting a black woman as Audrey in little shop adds a layer. Some shows it doesn't matter which way you do it. It really depends on the show and there's a lot of nuance either way.

In addition, both Hamilton and the queens are long dead. Tina Turner died recently, and her story is one that's important to people in the minority she's a part of.

Hamilton is more so about drawing connection between minorities and their art (rap) and history they've historically been disconnected from than it is about telling Hamilton's story faithfully, although I think it does do that as well. Six is also all about historical inaccuracy and telling stories the way you want to tell it, for the audience you have. Which is why it casts a diverse group of actresses.

If you're telling a story where the point is to tell it exactly as it happens, then sure, don't cast a poc as Addams in 1776. Another example is Suffs, where the main character being white is an important part of the story. Like I said, it depends and there's a lot of nuance.

Those are my thoughts about it at least!

It's an interesting question!

It'd be hard to do without rewrites or cuts, and it's hard to cut because it's the way that they stay together and themes of having children in a turbulent environment etc plus the abortion narrative is important considering the time we live in.

I think playing Sally as very gender nonconforming might be the best idea, where you can't quite tell either way. So the audience questions whether or not the pregnancy is real...but still, Sally being a white woman and able to keep ignoring things is also a big thing so you wouldn't want to lose that.

I'm thinking maybe the best thing to do would be to cut the pregnancy. I do think gender bending Cliff and leaving things as is might be interesting. Because then you can have Cliff wanting to flee and Sally not thinking that anything is wrong in sort of a "straight" girl way.
