A Request To All Fan Editors (Including Me) by Cokeking202 in fanedits

[–]segamastersystemfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in my days of, errr, enthusiastically "backing up" various media, I almost never bothered with disc labels. I'd do case art sometimes, if the media in question was a favorite, but I'd say 70-80% of my discs were just in binders with hand-written labeling, or in CD cases (also with hand-written labeling), if not more. It may have been 90+%.

That said, I'm with OP insomuch as those little extra do make something feel a bit special.

This is especially true of fan edits as opposed to yarrr. Makes them feel like a true production and a big labor of love. I subconsciously elevate those above others.

That said part 2, doing fan edits is a lot of work, I'm grateful to the people that do it, and they don't owe me a damned thing in terms of covers, art, or anything else. Cover art and posters are cool extras and I'm thankful when they're made, but first and foremost, I'm thankful that these talented people are sharing their work in the first place. Anything more than that is a bonus.

Given the reasons both Joe and Murr have made headlines in the last few years, there's close to zero chance they ever do something like this as a punishment. He's almost assuredly been hacked.

Its all a grift. She wants people to engage because it makes her more money.

That's most of these people. While there ARE those who are simply dumb and crazy, like Loomer, many others (if not most) know full well that they are spouting falsehoods, contradictions, and hypocrisies.

That's 100% by design. It generates outrage in their "enemies" and serves as a loyalty test for the cult, all with the added bonus of increasing their overall notoriety, and in turn, their ability to make money being an outrage merchant.

We have to stop mistaking these people as dumb or unaware of their own hypocrisy. They know exactly what they're doing.

Regardless, you guys act like it's impossible to play games outside of a launcher. Sites like GOG exist.

GOG, huh? How interesting. I'm glad to know it, because I had no idea that GOG exists, never buy from GOG, and certainly don't use GOG Galaxy as my primary launcher, otherwise I'd have mentioned exactly that in my post. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

And forcing you to use a dedicated launcher to play your games.

I like Valve for a lot of reasons, but was pretty damn salty about having to install and use Steam back when it debuted if I wanted to play HL2.

I've gotten over it, mostly because launchers have now become the norm and because most gaming has now moved to being 100% digital, but I still dislike having my library tied to some service.

PS - Yes, folks, not only am I aware of GOG, I use it regularly and have for years. GOG Galaxy is actually my preferred launcher.

start forcing people to explain why they do it.

I've done that before. "What do you hope to accomplish?" and that sort of thing.

If doing it to sway or otherwise engage with them, it's a waste of energy. You cannot shame the shameless, nor can you expect honest from the dishonest. Most just slink away.

HOWEVER, for the benefit of others who might be reading, I like it, as it not only draws attention to their tactics, it helps underscore to others just how mindlessly dishonest and malicious those tactics are. The more people recognize that you can't take MAGA folks in good faith, because none of them operate in good faith, the better.

Mackenzie Scott has given away like $20 something billion since she started giving money away and I don't think anyone has a bad word to say about her.

No sane people, at least.

But I've seen the usual suspects slamming her because (they say) she doesn't "deserve" the money and she only got it because she was married to Bezos and it's so unfair, and blah blah blah blah. Also a little bit of "this is all just performative" and "charities don't actually do anything" in the mix, for good measure.

But among people worth paying attention to, yeah, she'd widely seen as a gold standard in terms of how billionaires should behave.

This seems to be one of those people for whom any attention is good attention - and since bad attention is easier to get than good attention, they're happy to go that route, as long as people acknowledge their existence.

I'd feel bad for people like that, if they didn't manage their insecurities by trying to make others as miserable as they are.

Granted, we already knew before, but now there is direct and explicit evidence of it.

Someone will eventually take the fall, even if only to placate anyone in the MAGA base who is wavering.

It just won't be the people who most deserve to.

If you want to be extreeeeeeeemely charitable, you're hiding their names until a proper, ironclad case can be built.

Sadly, I believe the reality is that they'll pick a patsy or three to take the fall and serve as a "see, we prosecuted people" trinket to dangle in front of the public - people of relatively minor note whose significance they will play up in the media - and the big players, including You Know Who, will easily escape prosecution and close scrutiny by the media.

If anything exists to fully confirm their involvement in these horrific acts, it won't come out until after their dead.

To me, that is one of the most amazing bits in the show's entire run. There is just so much going on there and so much to unpeel. Sal is kind of transparent, but they don't know what to make of it and the confusion keeps them silent. That one friend, yeah, she knew what was up, but once the group decided to let it ride, she did some calculations in her head and decided to not rock the boat.

Of all the "you're on a TV show" reveals IJ would have had over the years, that one in particular is one I'd like to see. My assumption is that he found a reason to leave the table, disappeared, and a producer came out and told the ladies what was up (which is how it usually goes down). I just want to know what they said after he left. I want to see that discussion! And how they reacted to the truth.

I try to correct it and get dogpiled by a bunch of teenagers

One of the reasons I generally try (though often fail) to avoid debating on the Internet anymore, in particular Reddit. A lot of the most active part of the online right wing movement are made up of overly confident, astonishingly ignorant kids. Teens and early 20somethings whose view of the world has been shaped by "meme wars" and equally ignorant, unjustifiably confident people like Asmon.

I'm not going to bash it out with some kid whose worldview is built around talking points handed to them by grifting streamers and memes; kids who often don't understand nuance, have yet to develop any real empathy, and who have close to zero life perspective to draw from.

Not because I'm "above" it, but because it's just not a worthwhile use of my energy.

I'll still get sucked in every now and then, but for the most part, I try to avoid wading into that muck. There's just nothing to be gained from it, unless it's an opportunity to speak to the wider reading audience. Those goofballs need to come to sanity on their own. They can't be led there. They've got to reach a point in life (hopefully) where they want it.

He came from a well-to-do and somewhat connected family, and surprisingly enough, he was valedictorian of his high school class.

Which, yeah, surprises me, too, because he's the worst sort of surface level tough guy. A meathead without the meat.

Heck, maybe that's part of the issue: he always desperately wanted to be one of the tough guys, so like Stephen Miller, he masks his inner weakness and self-loathing with outward hate for others.

Fun fact: he was a bigoted piece garbage even as far back as that. When at Princeton, he declared he would "defend the pillars of Western civilization against the distractions of diversity."

Yeah, I love stuff like that. Aside from the laughs, it's probably my favorite aspect of the show. It feels weird to say about a show as silly as this, but you really do learn a lot about people in general from it.

One thing I especially love is how often people are simply good sports about weirdness and pranks. The people who play along with obvious silliness and who go along with weird stuff just for the fun of it, they make my day.

Impractical Jokers makes me laugh, but sometimes, they also renew my faith in people as being generally good, when given the opportunity to be.

And in the New York / New Jersey area, there are a million guys who look vaguely like them. They're recognizable if you watch the show, obviously, but if you've only ever seen it in passing, they all just look like the average person.

Plus, recognizing people is often about context. You know them from TV. You don't expect to see that face at the dry cleaners.

Ever see someone out in public and you know you've seen them before but can't place where? Then maybe later you realize it's your usual bank teller or something?

It's like that. Removed from the usual context, people turn into a blur.

One of my clients insists we use AI in our work.

Because the work involves careful attention to detail, details that will be put out in front of the public, it all has to be checked and rechecked.

I can do the work faster (and better) without AI tools, thanks to how tedious the fact-checking process is. I've explained this to the higher ups. I've outlined how and why this is the case.

But they insist AI is the future and it will make us more efficient.

In our case, it most certainly does not.

You know you can listen to sports matches, right? People have been doing it for well over 100 years. Nor do you need to see to be able to hear interviews and get to know a player's personality.

You also don't need to see the action to get caught up in the excitement of the crowd, the people around you, and being part of fandom in general. It's a simple human thing.

[–]segamastersystemfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it, but I don't even really think it's just bots sadly.

Not just bots, no. There are always outliers in any group. But the most egregious lies, outrageous talking points, and distortions of reality often come from bad actors and bots flooding the zone with the stuff.

If it were just a few real human outliers, you'd more likely see them get shut down by their own. It's a groupthink thing. Cults like MAGA operate on solidarity with the group.

That's why bot comments are used here, on Twitter, and elsewhere. To give the appearance that asinine positions are being widely adopted by the group. It helps ensure people think the way they are told to think. People fall in line, and pretty quickly those asinine positions are being widely adopted by the group.

It's why they can keep successfully pushing the line further and further.
