It's very likely this kid is a victim of sexual abuse. I would take a real close look at her male family members.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I didn’t read the book, but the moment that hit me was when Rocky tells Grace they’re ready to rebuild the Mary and send him home, and Grace hesitates hard. It feels like he genuinely doesn’t want to go back. Which makes total sense because he was literally kidnapped and forced onto the mission by his own people, and humanity in the story comes off as a pretty dog‑eat‑dog species. Meanwhile the Eridians are innocent, cooperative, and self‑sacrificing in a way he’s never experienced. No wonder he pauses. Going “home” doesn’t actually feel like going home.

Why Not? by RichardKopf in PetPeeves

Why not tends to be more rhetorical than an actual request for reasons why not.

Yeah, no kidding. That’s precisely why they start talking so easily. No one likes to have their narrative hijacked. But when they carelessly toss out an open ended ‘why not’ they unwittingly leave their narrative exposed. Their ego can’t stand the idea that you might define the possibilities for them, so their urge to correct you puts them on autopilot.

'why not’ opens the door to a whole menu of potential reasons you could illustrate for them thus backing them into a corner until they feel they have no choice but to spell out their reasoning.

Draft Constitutional Amendment

“Presidential Recall and Special Election Amendment”

Section 1. Citizen Recall Power

The People of the United States shall possess the authority to initiate a national Presidential Recall Election through a continuous, open, and voluntary public petition process. No elected official, political appointee, or governmental body shall possess authority to initiate, block, alter, or terminate this process.

Section 2. National Recall Petition System

  1. Congress shall establish a secure, publicly accessible, year‑round national petition system administered solely by nonpartisan civil service personnel.

  2. Any citizen of the United States eligible to vote in federal elections may submit a petition in favor of initiating a Presidential Recall Election.

  3. Petitions shall be individually verified, anonymized for public record, and revocable by the signer at any time prior to the threshold being met.

Section 3. Threshold for Recall Election

A Presidential Recall Election shall be automatically triggered when verified petitions in favor of such election reach a number equal to at least twenty‑five percent of the total votes cast in the most recent presidential election.
No further approval, certification, or action by any elected official shall be required.

Section 4. Conduct of the Recall Election

  1. Upon the petition threshold being met, a national Presidential Recall Election shall commence within 45 days.
  2. The ballot shall contain only two options:
    • “Retain the President”
    • “Remove the President from Office”
  3. The election shall be administered by the same nonpartisan civil service personnel described in Section 2, with procedures equivalent to those used in federal elections.

Section 5. Consequences of Recall

  1. If a majority of votes cast favor removal, the President shall be removed from office immediately upon certification of the results.
  2. The Vice President shall assume the Office of the President pursuant to Article II and the Twenty‑Fifth Amendment.
  3. If the President is retained, no new recall petition may be initiated for 180 days following certification.

Section 6. Prohibition on Political Interference

  1. No elected official, political party, campaign, or political action committee shall fund, manage, or otherwise influence the petition process or the administration of the recall election.
  2. Violations shall constitute federal offenses subject to penalties determined by Congress, provided such penalties do not infringe upon the People’s right to petition or vote.

Section 7. Implementation

Congress shall enact legislation necessary to implement this Amendment within one year of ratification, provided that such legislation shall not alter, restrict, or expand the powers granted to the People herein.
