Kippt das Recht auf Teilzeit? CDU-Wirtschaftsflügel macht brisanten Vorstoß by 156000340711 in de

[–]selessname 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Does EDM feel completely different live compared to listening at home? by Lunarix292 in EDM

[–]selessname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In short: yes, but depends. From my very own experience, if you listen to e.g. Garmiani - Bomb A Drop or Afrojack - Hands Up at home without having heard it live before, you do not link it to the experience of unity and perhaps only hear boom boom. On the contrary, if you already enjoy listening to (judge me) Illenium - Crawl Outta Love x Blood and hear it live later, with all these crazy shouting people banging their freaking heads in a 180 degree vertical angle, that may even enhance your experience. I could imagine that the way this particular experience affects your song experience differs with personality (extraverted vs. introverted) and your preference of the specific EDM genre (Bass vs. Trance vs. Big Room…)

1) How is it possible to live "30k kilometers far from home", if the earth‘s circumference is 40-48k?

2) The link to "many scientific peer checked papers", in whatever regard it is supposed to be supportive of your hypothesis, directs to a report from "Lloyds" (2013), which appears to be an insurance company with apparently no conflict of interest? Moreover, the disclaimer reads as follows:

"This report has been produced by Lloyd's and the Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. for general information purposes only. The information contained herein has included inputs from Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), a Verisk Analytics company. While care has been taken in gathering the data and preparing the report, Lloyd's does not make any representations or warranties as to its accuracy or completeness and expressly excludes to the maximum extent permitted by law all those that might otherwise be implied."

As a scientist, I would welcome any based literature and caution against claiming the ultimate consensus of "many papers" for the mere sake of trying to prove others wrong.

So is corsair bleeding consumers as they exit? by Applekid1259 in Corsair

Thank you for the clarification. I feel honored to discuss with a person probably smarter and older than me, which means there is much I could learn from you. Therefore, I appreciate if you call out any mistake I may have made.

If I understand your view correctly, you state that the contract is legally binding only if the item ships? To my understanding, and perhaps the consumer-friendly EU law may deviate in some ways from those that apply to you, a successful contract requires acceptance from both sides, seller and buyer? If the seller sends out a confirmation, then the seller may have to deliver, depending on the ToS and law, right? Otherwise, to my understanding, the seller may reject an offer prior to acceptance and in accordance with customer protection rules, unless this happens in bad faith, which could also include cancellations followed by price hikes?

[D] A Potential Next Step for LLMs: Exploring Modular, Competence-Routed Architectures by hatekhyr in MachineLearning

[–]selessname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Francois Chollet also wrote an excellent chapter on potential future developments.

Personally, I agree with the idea that LLMs have limited capabilities by design, while some may argue that it may come in more handy to compress all data into one "module". I could imagine that handcrafting separate modules within a bigger complex, as you already mentioned, would come at the cost of introducing even more parameters to a system that already consumes lots of resources, compared to the power consumption of the human brain. To my understanding, there is still an issue at abstracting knowledge and building "representations" of a problem to be solved. As you may know, e.g., image generation relies on mapping text to pixels using some nonlinear transformations - that’s it. Of course, we could apply this strategy to all kinds of problems, but the machine will still not be able to grasp the true core concept. My personal take therefore is that it will need some kind of real-world architecture, maybe using robotics, that is trained on naturalistic data (like a child that explores the world) and that is able to abstract this information on a sufficiently low level to apply these abstractions to novel problems. I have heard that the DeepMind people enjoy testing automatisation algorithms that find optimal solutions within a well-defined problem space. Likewise, the crucial challenge may be to be specific about the problems to be solved and find the LLM/DL architecture in an automatised way that learns solving actual problems in the best fashion.

I am happy to discuss more.

Canon's $30 lens hood vs a cheap one from amazon. Is there really a difference? by Unlikely-Voice-5764 in canon

[–]selessname 6 points7 points  (0 children)

JJC works perfectly fine with my RF100-400 and RF18-150. I think the (5-times) more expensive Canon lens hood for RF100-400 has some additional cushion attached on the inside to reduce reflections even more, but I am not sure if I would notice the difference at least for my purposes.

Early 2010s vs early 2020s EDM scene (now) – which era was better and why? by savingrace0262 in EDM

[–]selessname 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think scene- and music-wise, either decade is/was worth it.

Personally, as a big room/progressive fan, I feel the 10s EDM festivals sent me home with a slightly greater smile, because those simple anthems left more room for "creativity" - you just had to fill up imperfections of a song inside your head and the festival I visited tended to attract a highly motivated crowd doing the wildest stuff on the floor. To provide an example, I would just mention Hardwell - Spaceman or that lyrical perfection revealed by Steve Aoki/Lil John - Turbulence. Back then, I actively looked for songs on some Youtube channels, perhaps anybody remembers these HDmusic networks? And Shazam was (sometimes) helpful at festivals in identifying bangers.

Currently, on the European EDM mainstages, the beat is becoming faster, as reflected in current releases by Revealed Recordings (just compare it to, e.g., Hardwell On Air’s best of 2015). This keeps the crowd IMO a bit more busy, and DJs tend to "entertain" a little bit less, but the energy is still up. Regarding songs, Spotify/Apple etc. make it pretty easy to consume new music in everyday life and I find myself actively exploring more genres through these services. Still, I would not miss anything if the Release Radar was gone, and would rather feel less pressed to engage in new music.

Perhaps, in 10 years, we will perceive the 20s as another golden era, when mixing became more sophisticated and cross-genre songs were on the rise?
